The Bombay is a compact, muscular cat with a glossy black coat, striking copper-to-gold eyes, and a people-oriented personality. Although it resembles a miniature panther, this is a domestic breed developed by crossing Burmese cats with black American Shorthairs—not a wild hybrid.
Bombays are often affectionate, playful, intelligent, and highly involved in household life. They can be an excellent choice for someone who wants an interactive companion, but they may become bored or lonely if left without attention and enrichment for long periods.

What does a Bombay cat look like?
The Bombay was bred to create the appearance of a small black panther. Its coat should be black from root to tip, short, smooth, and glossy. The fur lies close to the body, so it does not require the extensive grooming associated with long-haired breeds.
Under the coat, a Bombay has a surprisingly solid, muscular body. It is not simply a slender black cat: the breed has a rounded chest, substantial bone, medium length, and a firm feel when lifted. The legs are proportionate, the paws are rounded, and the tail is medium in length and usually tapers toward the tip.

The head is rounded, with a short muzzle, a broad face, a firm chin, and medium-sized ears set well apart. Eyes are one of the breed’s defining features. Depending on the cat and the standard being used, they may range from deep gold to copper. Kittens may begin with less intense eye color, which develops as they mature.
A Bombay should be entirely black under most major breed standards. A small white patch may occur in some cats, but it is generally considered a fault for showing rather than a health problem. A black domestic shorthair can look very similar, and pedigree is the only reliable way to establish that a cat is a Bombay.
Bombay origin and breed history
The breed was created in the United States by breeder Nikki Horner, who wanted a cat with the appearance of an Indian black leopard and the temperament of a companion cat. Her breeding program combined sable Burmese cats with black American Shorthairs.
The name “Bombay” refers to the Indian city now known as Mumbai, reflecting the breed’s intended panther-like appearance. The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognized the Bombay in 1970. The breed remains relatively uncommon compared with popular pedigreed cats, so a kitten may require patience and a careful search for an established breeder.
Bombays are not related to wild panthers, black leopards, or any other wild cat. Their exotic appearance comes from selective breeding for coat color, body type, and facial structure.
Bombay temperament and behavior
Most Bombays are strongly attached to their families. They commonly follow people from room to room, investigate household activities, and seek physical contact. Some enjoy sitting on a lap; others prefer pressing against a person or settling beside them. As with any breed, an individual Bombay may be more independent than the typical description suggests.

They are generally playful well into adulthood. A Bombay may enjoy chasing wand toys, retrieving small toys, learning clicker behaviors, or working out a food puzzle. Their intelligence is an asset, but it also means that a predictable, unstimulating environment can lead to nuisance behaviors such as excessive vocalizing, cupboard exploration, or knocking objects down.
Many are moderately to highly vocal. Their voices are usually not as persistent as those of some Siamese-type cats, but a Bombay may chirp, trill, or meow to request food, play, or attention. They often prefer being included rather than being ignored in another room.

Do not rely on the breed label alone: provide escape areas, supervise interactions with young children, and introduce animals through separation, scent exchange, and short controlled meetings.
Exercise and enrichment
A Bombay does not need outdoor access to be happy. Indoor living is often safer, provided the home offers daily activity and opportunities to climb, scratch, hunt, and rest.
- Schedule at least two interactive play sessions each day, adjusting the length to the cat’s age and energy.
- Use wand toys, toy mice, tunnels, and chase games that allow a successful “catch” at the end.
- Rotate toys instead of leaving every toy available all the time.
- Offer puzzle feeders or hide small portions of the daily food allowance around a safe room.
- Provide a sturdy scratching post and a stable cat tree or other elevated resting place.
- Use window perches, secure screened windows, or a catio for safe visual stimulation.
Bombays are often trainable with reward-based methods. A few minutes of target training, name recognition, carrier practice, or harness work can provide useful mental exercise. Never force leash walking: some cats tolerate a harness, while others find it stressful.
Feeding and weight management
Feed a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for the cat’s life stage. Bombay cats do not need a special “panther” diet or exotic meat. Choose portions according to body condition, age, activity, reproductive status, and the food’s calorie density.

The breed’s compact, muscular appearance can make weight gain less obvious under a shiny black coat. Check the cat’s body regularly rather than judging by the number on a scale alone. You should be able to feel the ribs beneath a light layer of fat and see a waist from above. Ask a veterinarian to assess body condition if you are unsure.
Measure meals instead of allowing unlimited food, particularly for a neutered or indoor adult. Treats should be a small part of the daily calorie intake. Fresh water should be available at all times; some Bombays prefer a fountain or wide, shallow bowl.
Grooming a Bombay
The short coat is one of the easiest aspects of Bombay care. A soft brush or grooming mitt once a week usually removes loose hair and distributes skin oils. More frequent brushing may be useful during seasonal shedding or if the cat enjoys it.
Routine grooming should also include:
- Trimming the claws when their tips become sharp, often every few weeks
- Checking the ears for excess wax, odor, redness, or discharge
- Brushing the teeth with cat toothpaste as often as the cat will tolerate, ideally regularly
- Checking the skin for lumps, wounds, parasites, or areas of hair loss
Bathing is rarely necessary. If a bath is needed, use a cat-safe shampoo and introduce water gradually. Human shampoo can irritate feline skin.
Bombay health considerations
Bombays can be healthy, long-lived cats, but the breed’s Burmese ancestry means that responsible health screening matters. A breed name does not predict an individual cat’s medical future, and many conditions seen in Bombays can also affect other cats.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. It can occur without obvious early signs and may eventually lead to heart failure or blood clots. Breeders should discuss the cardiac history of their lines and use veterinary examinations appropriate to their program. DNA testing, where available for a relevant mutation, cannot replace a veterinary cardiac assessment or rule out every cause of HCM.

- 32″ height allows cats to stretch fully and tone muscles
- Sturdy 16″ by 16″ base eliminates tipping and wobbling
- Fibrous and durable woven sisal naturally inspires scratching
- Superior to carpeted posts that may snag nail
- Assembles with two included screws
Seek urgent veterinary care for difficult or rapid breathing, collapse, sudden weakness, or signs of severe pain. A cat that suddenly cannot use one or more legs may have a blood clot and requires emergency attention.
Obesity and diabetes risk
Food-driven indoor cats can gain weight quickly when meals are oversized and play is limited. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, joint strain, reduced grooming ability, and other health problems. Regular weighing, measured portions, and daily play are more useful than waiting for visible weight gain.
Dental disease
Dental disease is common in cats generally. Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, drooling, dropping food, chewing on one side, or reluctance to eat should prompt a veterinary examination. Home tooth brushing helps, but it does not replace professional dental care when disease is already present.
Inherited and family-line conditions
Because Bombays are closely related to Burmese cats, a breeder should be able to explain screening for inherited conditions relevant to the lines being used. Depending on the pedigree, this may include testing for pyruvate kinase deficiency or other known Burmese-family disorders. Ask which tests were performed, which laboratory issued the results, and whether the documents apply to both parents.
Routine preventive care still matters: vaccinations based on veterinary advice, parasite control, dental checks, weight monitoring, and annual examinations for adults. Senior cats often benefit from more frequent examinations and age-appropriate blood and urine testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Bombay cats hypoallergenic?
No cat is genuinely hypoallergenic. Bombays may shed less visibly than long-haired cats because their coat is short, but they still produce allergenic proteins in saliva, skin flakes, and other body secretions. A person with allergies should spend time with adult Bombays before committing to adoption or purchase.

- Designed for Large Cats and Kittens: The extra-tall, thick post lets growing kittens and large adult cats such as Maine Coons and Ragdolls stand, reach, and enjoy a full-body stretch. Its broad surface encourages cats to scratch naturally, helping satisfy their instincts and keep their claws healthy.
- Interactive Cat Toys for Indoor Cats: The dangling ball and mouse on the cat scratching post sway with every paw tap, inviting cats to bat and pounce. The plush top gives kittens a place to rest and adult cats a spot to stand and watch the room, adding more ways to play and relax in multi-cat homes.
- Durable Natural Cotton Rope: The thick rope is softer and more durable than sisal, giving cats a satisfying scratching surface. Its texture feels comfortable on paws, while its greater thickness makes it less likely to loosen or fray, leaving fewer fibers on your floors for a cleaner, tidier home.
- Minimalist Cat Furniture: Neutral tones and a minimalist design blend with decor in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices. Its upright profile creates a dedicated scratching spot with less bulk than a large cat tree, or it can pair with one. The thick base keeps the post steady without crowding the room.
- Easy 5-Minute Assembly: This cat scratching post includes clear illustrated instructions, screws, and all required tools for assembly in about five minutes. Connect the post sections and tighten the screws for a secure fit. The Ahomdoo customer care team is ready to provide helpful support.
Choosing a Bombay kitten or adult cat
Because the breed is uncommon, advertisements for “rare miniature panthers” deserve careful scrutiny. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss health, temperament, socialization, registration, and lifetime responsibility for the cats they produce.
- Verify the breeder. Look for a recognized registry, transparent contact information, and a willingness to answer detailed questions.
- Ask for parent information. Request health records and details of screening for conditions relevant to the pedigree, not just a verbal claim that the kittens are healthy.
- See the living conditions. Kittens should be raised in a clean environment with regular human handling and opportunities for appropriate play.
- Review the contract. It should state vaccination and veterinary-care records, registration terms if applicable, sale conditions, and what happens if you can no longer keep the cat.
- Do not rush the handover. Kittens should remain with their mother and littermates until they are appropriately weaned and socialized; many reputable breeders place them at around 12–14 weeks rather than as soon as they can eat independently.
Ask whether the kitten has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, dewormed when appropriate, microchipped, and tested or treated according to local recommendations. An adult Bombay from a shelter or breed rescue can also make an excellent companion; black cats are sometimes overlooked because of outdated superstitions and poor visibility in photographs.
Common Bombay cat misconceptions

| “A black coat means the cat is healthier.” | Coat color does not eliminate inherited disease or ordinary feline health risks. |
FAQ
Are Bombay cats good pets for families?
Often, yes. Bombays are usually social, playful, and adaptable, but children should be taught to handle cats gently and all introductions should be supervised.
Do Bombay cats need to live with another cat?
Not necessarily. A Bombay may thrive as a single cat if it receives daily interaction and enrichment, while some individuals enjoy a compatible feline companion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much grooming does a Bombay cat need?
Usually very little: weekly brushing is generally sufficient, along with regular claw trimming, ear checks, and dental care.
Are Bombay cats rare?
They are less common than many popular cat breeds. If buying from a breeder, verify pedigree, health records, and breeding practices rather than paying extra for claims such as “rare panther bloodlines.”
The Bottom Line
A Bombay is a glossy black, medium-sized companion cat with a muscular build and an engaging personality. Its coat is easy to maintain, but its social nature means it needs regular company, play, and mental stimulation. Feed measured portions, monitor weight, maintain dental and preventive care, and choose a breeder or rescue with transparent health and welfare practices.
