What are the three types of Pomeranian dogs? In pet advertisements and search results, the phrase usually means three informal appearance labels: fox face, teddy bear, and baby doll. They are not three officially recognized Pomeranian varieties. Kennel-club standards describe one Pomeranian breed, and the American Kennel Club’s reference to a “fox-like” expression describes an alert, intelligent look rather than a separate type.
The useful distinction is cosmetic. A label may suggest a narrower or rounder-looking muzzle, a different facial outline, or a rounded haircut. It does not establish a puppy’s pedigree, adult appearance, temperament, health, movement, or suitability for your household. Those decisions require evaluating the whole dog and checking the parents’ health information.

Are fox-face, teddy-bear, and baby-doll Pomeranians real types?
No. These are descriptive marketing terms, not separate varieties recognized by the major breed standards. The American Kennel Club’s January 2026 Toy Group standard describes one compact, short-backed, active toy dog of Nordic descent. Its head should be wedge-shaped, with small, high-mounted erect ears, dark bright almond-shaped eyes, and a balanced muzzle. The standard gives a muzzle-to-skull proportion of one-third to two-thirds.
The standard’s exact wording is: “Expression – may be referred to as fox-like, denoting his alert and intelligent nature.” In context, “fox-like” describes the expression produced by the breed’s head shape and alertness. It is not an invitation to classify Pomeranians into a fox-face subgroup.

The United Kennel Club standard likewise treats the Pomeranian as a toy Spitz with square proportions, a profuse stand-off double coat, a foxy face, and small, high-set pointed ears. It also cautions judges and breeders against exaggerations or conditions that undermine health, welfare, soundness, or the breed’s essential character.
The three informal labels readers encounter
| Label | Commonly implied muzzle | Overall facial outline | Could grooming create the look? | What the label cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fox face | Narrower-looking face or a longer-looking muzzle | More wedge-shaped or pointed impression | Usually refers to natural appearance, although coat styling can emphasize the outline | It does not prove a separate lineage, superior health, adult size, or temperament |
| Teddy bear | Shorter- or rounder-looking muzzle | Full, circular-looking cheeks and a soft expression | Yes. A rounded trim can make the head look more spherical | It does not prove that the muzzle is naturally short or that the dog will retain the look |
| Baby doll | Moderately short or delicate-looking muzzle | Sweet, rounded expression often described as between the other two looks | Sometimes; coat volume and trimming influence the impression | It does not predict health, structure, adult appearance, or pedigree |
Fox face
“Fox face” is commonly used for a Pomeranian whose muzzle appears relatively narrow or long and whose head has a more obvious wedge. The term loosely echoes the AKC’s “fox-like” expression language, but sellers often use it as if it were a named variety. It is not. A dog can have an alert, foxy expression while still needing to meet the breed standard’s overall balance.
Teddy bear
“Teddy bear Pomeranian” can mean either a naturally rounder-looking face or a haircut that surrounds the head with an even, circular outline. The rounded appearance may be created largely by grooming rather than skull shape. The distinction matters when you are looking at puppy photographs: a trimmed coat can change the apparent proportions, while the underlying head and muzzle remain the same.

Baby doll
“Baby doll” is the least precise of the three labels. It generally describes a sweet, rounded expression that people perceive as intermediate between fox-face and teddy-bear looks. There is no agreed measurement that separates a baby-doll face from the other descriptions, so two sellers may apply the term to noticeably different dogs.
Why a puppy’s “type” can change
Pomeranian puppies do not keep a fixed facial appearance from infancy to adulthood. The skull, muzzle, furnishings, and outer coat develop at different rates. As the coat becomes fuller, the same head can look narrower, rounder, or more compact depending on the stage of growth and the way it is brushed or trimmed. A seller’s prediction about an adult face is therefore an estimate, not a certainty.
Photographs also distort comparison. Camera angle, lens distance, damp or fluffed coat, and a close trim can all alter how long a muzzle appears. Ask to see several recent images taken from the side and front, and, where possible, meet the puppy and its parents in person. Treat the label as a description of one moment rather than a permanent classification.

The specialist explanation at Pomeranian.org advises judging the whole dog—soundness, balance, movement, temperament, and coat—instead of selecting by a fashionable face term. That source also cautions that deliberately exaggerated short muzzles can raise welfare concerns. The informal labels themselves are not medical categories, and none should be used as a health guarantee.
What the official standards actually prioritize
The AKC standard’s “compact, short-backed” description refers to the breed’s overall body, not a choice among face styles. It calls for a double coat with a short, dense undercoat and a profuse, harsh-textured longer outer coat. The head should taper in a wedge, the ears should be small and erect, and the eyes should be dark, bright, and almond-shaped. Those features are evaluated together; selecting one facial impression while ignoring body, coat, legs, movement, or bite gives an incomplete picture.
The UKC standard makes a similar point by emphasizing a square outline, stand-off coat, pointed ears, and a foxy face while warning against extremes that damage soundness or welfare. A round haircut, a social-media nickname, or a particularly short-looking muzzle does not override those structural priorities.

How to choose a puppy without relying on a face label
- Ask for the parents’ documented health results. The AKC’s Pomeranian information page recommends that prospective buyers request copies of the litter’s parents’ OFA results. The national breed club’s recommended evaluations include a patella evaluation, cardiac examination, and ophthalmologist examination. You can review the guidance at AKC Pomeranian Dog Breed Information.
- Evaluate proportion and movement. Watch the puppy walk and play on a level surface. Look for coordinated movement, stable use of all four legs, and the ability to breathe and recover comfortably after ordinary activity. Do not treat a round face or short-looking muzzle as a substitute for sound structure.
- Observe behavior in more than one situation. A responsible breeder should let you see the puppy interacting with littermates and people. Note curiosity, recovery after a mild surprise, willingness to engage, and tolerance of gentle handling. A face label does not predict personality.
- Inspect the coat and skin. The breed’s double coat should be assessed for condition, density, and signs of irritation or parasites. Ask what brushing routine the breeder uses and whether the puppy has been introduced to combing, nail care, bathing, and drying.
- Check what is natural and what is styled. Ask whether the photograph shows an untrimmed coat, a puppy trim, or a rounded teddy-bear haircut. Request unedited images so you can distinguish head shape from coat volume.
- Read the contract and records. Verify vaccination, deworming, identification, return provisions, and registration details. Marketing language such as “rare baby doll” should never replace written health documentation.
Temperament and family fit matter more than appearance
The AKC describes Pomeranians as lively, affectionate, curious, and intelligent. It recommends early socialization, patient and consistent training, and early leash training. Housetraining can be challenging, so a buyer should plan a regular schedule and close supervision rather than assuming a particular face type will be easier.
Because Pomeranians are very small, the AKC generally considers them a better fit for families with older children who understand that the dog must be handled gently. Children should learn not to carry the dog without an adult’s guidance, grab its coat, or disturb it while eating or sleeping. These household considerations apply equally to fox-face, teddy-bear, and baby-doll advertisements.
What “teddy bear” means for grooming
The teddy-bear label is often a styling description. A groomer can shape the surrounding coat into a rounded silhouette, making the head look broader and the muzzle appear shorter. That visual effect is temporary and changes as the coat grows.

AKC care guidance recommends frequent brushing because the Pomeranian has a profuse double coat. If you are not comfortable maintaining it yourself, the guidance says a professional groomer may be used every four to six weeks. A suitable Pomeranian dog brush or comb is an optional tool category, but the important practice is regular, gentle removal of loose undercoat and prevention of mats.
Pomeranian.org warns that clipping the outer coat too short can impair regrowth. Do not assume that a close shave is a harmless shortcut to a teddy-bear shape. Discuss the desired outline with a groomer who understands double-coated breeds, and preserve enough outer coat to protect the skin and support normal regrowth.
Common mistakes when comparing the three looks
- Assuming a label is a breed classification. No kennel-club standard recognizes fox-face, teddy-bear, or baby-doll Pomeranians as separate varieties.
- Buying from one photograph. Angle, lighting, coat volume, and trimming can change the apparent muzzle and head outline.
- Treating a short muzzle as automatically desirable. The standards emphasize balance and soundness, while the specialist source cautions against exaggerated shortening that may compromise welfare.
- Expecting the puppy to keep its baby face. Head and coat proportions change during growth, so adult appearance cannot be guaranteed from an early image.
- Ignoring parent health records. Patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations provide more meaningful information than an advertising nickname.
- Confusing grooming with genetics. A rounded trim can create a teddy-bear outline without indicating a naturally round skull or a distinct bloodline.
The practical answer for prospective owners
If someone asks for the “three types of Pomeranian dogs,” answer with the three popular looks—fox face, teddy bear, and baby doll—but explain that they are informal descriptions. Use the terms to discuss what you see in a photograph, not to infer a dog’s future health or identity. For a purchase or adoption decision, prioritize documented parental testing, balanced structure, comfortable movement, stable temperament, and a realistic grooming plan.
