When Pounce lost her owner, the Burmese cat was moved into an unfamiliar Battersea cattery, where anxiety intensified her habit of eating non-food objects. A tailored behaviour plan helped her settle, her unusual eating eased, and she eventually moved into a calm, loving home.
Pounce’s story is a quiet account of recovery rather than a dramatic rescue. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home describes a Burmese cat who arrived after her owner died, struggled in an unfamiliar cattery and showed signs of pica, then gradually regained her confidence with individual support. The organisation published the account, “A fresh start for Pounce,” on 2 June 2025.

Pounce arrived after losing the person she knew
The first change in Pounce’s life was not a behaviour problem but the loss of her owner. Battersea says she came into its care after her owner passed away. For a cat accustomed to one person, one home and one daily rhythm, arrival at a rehoming centre meant that familiar world had disappeared at once.
The account does not assign Pounce a human emotion or speculate about what she understood. It records the practical consequence: the cattery was unfamiliar, and she became anxious there. That setting forms the background for everything that followed. Her unusual eating did not appear in isolation from the upheaval; Battersea says the anxiety made the behaviour worse.

Her anxiety was accompanied by signs of pica
Battersea uses the term signs of pica for Pounce’s compulsive tendency to eat items that are not food. The examples in the account are especially striking: sponges and dishcloths. These are ordinary household objects, but for Pounce they had become things she tried to eat.
The wording matters. The story describes signs observed in Pounce; it does not present a general explanation of why cats develop pica, a universal diagnosis for every cat that chews an object, or a treatment guide. In this case, the behaviour was reported alongside heightened anxiety in the cattery, and Battersea says the two changed together as she received support.
For staff, this meant Pounce needed more than a standard description on an adoption card. Her eating habits were part of the way distress was showing itself in that particular environment. The account does not say how often she attempted to eat sponges or dishcloths, how long the behaviour had existed before she arrived, or whether a veterinarian gave a formal diagnosis. Those details are not supplied, so they cannot be used to draw conclusions about her history beyond what Battersea reports.

Battersea built a plan around Pounce as an individual
Battersea says its behaviourists developed a tailored care plan. Its purpose was twofold: reduce the stress Pounce was experiencing and provide both mental and physical stimulation. The plan was designed for her circumstances, rather than presented as a fixed programme for every cat showing similar behaviour.

The public account does not list the individual exercises, handling routine, enrichment schedule, food arrangements or veterinary steps that may have formed part of her care. It names the goals—lower stress and offer stimulation—but not a recipe that readers can reproduce. That restraint keeps the story focused on the support Pounce received instead of turning one cat’s experience into a promise about pica.
What is clear is that the plan treated her behaviour in context. Pounce was living through bereavement, a new building and unfamiliar routines. Battersea’s description connects the care plan to those pressures and to her need for both activity and engagement. The organisation does not claim that a particular toy, deterrent, supplement or household technique solved the problem.
The change happened gradually
Pounce did not transform overnight. Battersea reports that she gradually relaxed. The word “gradually” is important because it describes a process of small changes rather than a single breakthrough. As the cattery became less overwhelming and the plan supported her, staff saw more of the cat beneath the anxious behaviour.

Battersea also says her unusual eating habits eased as her anxiety did. The organisation’s own summary is concise: As her anxiety eased, so did her unusual eating habits. This is an observation about Pounce’s progress, not evidence that anxiety explains every case of pica or that reducing stress will produce the same result for another cat.

| Before arrival | Pounce was living with her owner, who later passed away. |

| Behaviour support | Behaviourists created a tailored plan intended to reduce stress and provide mental and physical stimulation. |
| Settling period | Pounce gradually relaxed and showed a sociable, lap-cat nature. |
| Eating behaviour | Her unusual eating habits eased as her anxiety eased. |

What her new home represented
The final stage of the account is deliberately simple: Pounce found a calm, loving new home. Battersea does not identify the adopters, describe the property, or provide a follow-up timetable. The value of the ending lies in the match itself. After a period in which unfamiliar surroundings amplified her distress, Pounce moved on to a setting described as calm and loving.
By then, prospective adopters could see more than the behaviour that had first drawn concern. They could see a cat who enjoyed social contact and settled on a lap. Her unusual eating had eased, and the organisation’s account presents that improvement as part of her readiness for a new beginning.
The story does not say that every risk disappeared forever, nor does it offer a guarantee about what Pounce would do in a different environment. It records the outcome Battersea observed: the behaviour became less pronounced as her anxiety decreased, and she was placed in a home that suited the calmer state she had reached.

Why the details of Pounce’s setting matter
Pounce’s progress is easiest to understand when the setting stays in view. Battersea does not describe her as a cat who simply needed to be “fixed.” It describes a cat whose anxiety intensified in a particular place after a major loss, then improved when staff adjusted support around her needs.
That distinction protects the individual nature of the story. The same outward action—trying to eat a sponge or dishcloth—could have a different history in another cat. Pounce’s account gives readers one carefully bounded sequence: loss of an owner, anxiety in an unfamiliar cattery, tailored support, gradual relaxation and a successful move to a new home. It does not establish a rate of recovery or a standard protocol.
It also shows why first impressions can be incomplete. Early in her stay, Pounce’s anxiety and unusual eating were prominent. With time, staff saw sociability and an appetite for lap-based companionship. The later picture did not erase the earlier concern; it added information that could help identify a suitable home.

Someone considering a cat with a history like Pounce’s would need current, cat-specific information from the rescue rather than relying on this story alone. Battersea’s published account does not answer the following practical questions, but they are the points an adopter would need clarified before making a decision:

- Has the cat attempted to eat non-food items recently, and which items are involved?
- What signs indicate that the cat is becoming anxious in a new environment?
- Which parts of the individual care plan should continue after adoption?
- What kind of mental and physical stimulation has helped this particular cat engage calmly?
- What supervision, household changes or follow-up does the rescue recommend?
- Who should an adopter contact if unusual eating returns?
These questions are not extra claims about Pounce. They mark the information that would be needed for a responsible handover while keeping the published account’s limits clear. Her successful placement does not remove the importance of an individual conversation with the rescue team.
Pounce’s outcome
Battersea’s account ends with a cat who had moved through upheaval without being reduced to it. Pounce lost her owner, became anxious in unfamiliar surroundings and showed signs of pica involving objects such as sponges and dishcloths. Behaviourists then shaped care around lowering stress and adding stimulation. Over time she relaxed, her unusual eating eased, and her sociable lap-cat nature became visible.
Her fresh start was therefore more than a change of address. It was the result of recognising how strongly the environment was affecting her, giving her time to settle, and waiting for her ordinary personality to emerge. Battersea says that process led Pounce to a calm, loving new home.
