Professional dog groomers need a coat- and task-specific system, not one universal brush, clipper or dryer. A practical baseline includes coat-preparation brushes and combs, undercoat tools where appropriate, professional clippers and shears, dog-formulated bathing products, a canine dryer, nail and paw-care supplies, a stable nonslip table, sanitation equipment and first-aid protection.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) puts the governing principle plainly: “Select the type of tool best suited for the intended purpose and coat type.” Use the framework below to assemble a salon kit, then adjust it for each dog’s coat, skin, behavior, tolerance and the service being performed.

What tools do professional dog groomers need?
A working salon kit is easiest to plan by task. Coat preparation removes dirt, loose hair and tangles before bathing or clipping. Clipping and finishing shape the coat. Bathing and drying clean and prepare the hair. Nail and paw tools handle routine foot care. The workstation, sanitation supplies and protective equipment make every other tool safer to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Task | Core tools | Selection questions |
|---|---|---|
| Coat preparation | Slicker or pin brush, metal comb, short-coat brush or hound mitt, undercoat rake or carding tool | What coat length, density, texture and matting level are you addressing? |
| Clipping and finishing | Professional clipper with task-appropriate blades, shears or rounded scissors | Is the equipment in safe working condition, and can it be disinfected between dogs? |
| Bathing and drying | Dog-formulated shampoo, canine blow dryer or forced-air dryer, towels and cleaning supplies | Can you control heat, airflow, noise and the dog’s exposure time? |
| Nails and paws | Guillotine- or scissors-style nail clippers or a grinder, styptic powder, nontoxic paw-pad balm | Does the tool match your training and the dog’s tolerance? |
| Workstation and safety | Sturdy nonslip table, disinfectant, first-aid kit, eye wash, fire extinguisher, PPE | Can the area and equipment be safely operated, cleaned and monitored? |
No single item in this table is suitable for every dog. The AKC’s professional standards require selecting tools by intended purpose and coat type, assessing the work area and equipment, and using humane handling throughout the appointment.

Coat-preparation tools
Slicker brushes
A gentle wire slicker brush is a useful starting point for many longer coats. Its fine wires can separate hair and lift loose material, but the brush still has to be matched to the coat and used with light pressure. Work in small sections rather than forcing the brush through a knot. Excess pressure can scrape skin or make a dog defensive, especially on thin-skinned areas.
Pin brushes and metal combs
Longer coats may also need a pin brush with longer bristles and a sturdy metal comb. The brush moves through the coat; the comb checks the result and identifies tangles that a brush can glide over. Comb methodically through the coat in sections, including behind ears, under the legs, around the collar area and at the tail, where tangles commonly remain.
A comb is an inspection tool as much as a finishing tool. If it will not pass through a section without snagging, stop and reassess rather than pulling. Severe matting may require a different service decision, a shorter clip or veterinary input when skin health cannot be evaluated safely.

Short-haired dogs often need less detangling and more loose-hair removal. The AKC identifies short natural-bristle brushes and hound mitts as options for these coats. Choose a tool that collects shed hair without irritating the skin, and keep pressure especially gentle over bony areas, scars or places where a dog signals discomfort.
Undercoat rakes and carding tools
Double coats can hold a dense undercoat that ordinary brushing does not remove efficiently. Undercoat raking and carding are part of the professional toolkit for this work. Use these tools only when the coat and service call for them; aggressive or excessive removal can damage the outer coat or inflame skin. The correct technique depends on coat density, seasonal shedding, matting and the dog’s response.

Clippers and shears: selecting and using them safely
Professional clippers and blades
Choose a clipper and blade combination for the intended coat work rather than buying by blade length alone. The AKC standards do not identify one universally safe blade size. Capability, blade compatibility, maintenance access and the planned service all matter.
Before each appointment, inspect the clipper, cord or battery, housing, blade attachment and guards. A tool that runs hot, vibrates unexpectedly, has a damaged cord or cannot be cleaned safely should be removed from service until repaired or replaced. Introduce clippers slowly, particularly around a dog unfamiliar with vibration or noise. Watch for sensitivity and for heat that could burn skin. Stop, allow equipment to cool and reassess whenever the dog shows distress or the tool’s temperature changes.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShears and finishing scissors
Shears provide finishing control where a clipper cannot. Rounded scissors are identified by the AKC as professional grooming tools, but rounded tips do not eliminate injury risk. Keep the dog’s head and body positioned so a sudden movement is less likely to bring skin into the cutting path. Disinfect shears between dogs, and check hinge action and edge condition so you are not forcing a dull tool through the coat.
Bathing and drying equipment
Dog-formulated shampoo
Use shampoo made for dogs, selected for the coat and the service. “Dog-formulated” does not mean every formula suits every skin condition. If a dog has persistent odor, lesions, severe itching, discharge or another medical concern, do not turn a grooming product into a diagnosis or treatment. Document the finding and refer the owner to a veterinarian when appropriate.
Canine blow dryers and forced-air dryers
A canine blow dryer is designed to move water from the coat without relying solely on high heat. The AKC’s consumer guidance describes high-velocity or forced-air dryers that dry principally through airflow. In a professional setting, the standards require low heat, no concentrated heated air on one area and airflow that keeps moving.

Keep airflow away from the dog’s face and ears. Noise and pressure can be frightening, so acclimate the dog gradually and use the lowest effective setting. A dryer is not a substitute for supervision: observe breathing, posture, skin response and stress signals continuously.
Dryer monitoring interval
The AKC professional standards specify checking dogs with air-movement dryers every 5–7 minutes. Treat this as a maximum interval in the standard, not a reason to look away for that long. Stay closer when a dog is anxious, brachycephalic, elderly, medically fragile, heavily coated or reacting to the airflow. Stop drying if the dog overheats, struggles or develops signs of distress.
Nail and paw-care tools
Nail clippers or grinders
Routine nail work can use guillotine-style or scissors-style clippers, or a nail grinder. Select the format you can control accurately and that the dog will tolerate. Introduce grinders gradually because vibration and sound may be more challenging than clipping. Restrain only as needed for safe handling; forcing a panicked dog increases injury risk.
Styptic powder
Keep styptic powder immediately available as a readiness item for minor nail-bleeding incidents. It is not permission to perform a procedure beyond your training, and persistent bleeding, a deep cut or a distressed animal requires veterinary advice.
Paw-pad balm
The AKC includes nontoxic paw-pad balm in a general grooming supply list. Use a product intended for dogs, prevent licking while directed by its label, and avoid applying anything to infected, ulcerated or otherwise abnormal pads without veterinary guidance.

Workstation, sanitation and personal protection
Table and work-area requirements
Use a sturdy grooming table with an easy-to-clean, nonslip surface. The table must remain stable during brushing, clipping and drying, and its restraints or supports must be used humanely and according to their design. Inspect the table, drying equipment and surrounding floor for hazards before opening the salon.
Disinfection between dogs
Tools and grooming areas should be cleaned and disinfected after each dog. Follow the disinfectant manufacturer’s directions for dilution, contact time, rinsing, storage and ventilation. Verify that the product has applicable registration and antimicrobial properties through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) information and the product label. Do not mix chemicals or place wet tools back into a clean storage area.
Build a workflow that separates dirty and ready-to-use tools. Remove hair and visible debris first, then wash as directed, apply disinfectant for the full contact time and allow tools to dry before the next use. Cleanable, nonporous surfaces simplify this process; porous or damaged equipment is harder to sanitize reliably.
First aid and emergency readiness
Professional standards call for groomer and pet first-aid readiness, eye wash, a fire extinguisher and contact information for a local emergency veterinarian. Store these items where staff can reach them immediately, not in a locked cabinet across the building. Check expiration dates and replace used supplies promptly.

Personal protective equipment
Consider water-resistant quick-dry clothing, closed-toe nonslip footwear, gloves, masks, arm coverings, hearing protection and eye protection. The appropriate combination depends on the task, chemical label, noise level, coat debris and the worker’s own health needs. PPE supplements, rather than replaces, ventilation, safe tool handling and sanitation.

Build a kit for the coat in front of you
| Coat or service situation | Useful starting tools | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Short coat and routine de-shedding | Short natural-bristle brush or hound mitt, dog shampoo, controlled dryer, nail tools | Use gentle pressure; monitor skin for irritation. |
| Long coat with tangles | Gentle slicker, pin brush, sturdy metal comb, shears, dog shampoo and dryer | Work in sections and do not force a comb through tight mats. |
| Dense double coat | Coat-appropriate brush, undercoat rake or carding tool, comb, dryer with moving airflow | Remove undercoat deliberately; avoid damaging the outer coat or skin. |
| Clip-and-finish appointment | Maintained clipper and compatible blades, shears, comb, nonslip table and sanitation supplies | Introduce vibration gradually and check blades for heat and safe operation. |
This is a planning framework, not a universal recipe. Coat texture, previous grooming, skin condition, age, behavior and the requested finish can change the tool choice during the appointment.
A practical selection process for salon owners and students
- Define the service. Write down whether the appointment involves brushing, de-matting, bathing, drying, clipping, scissoring, nail care or a combination. A tool bought for one task may be unsuitable for another.
- Assess the coat. Note length, density, texture, undercoat, tangles and sensitive areas. Select brush, comb and undercoat tools from that assessment rather than from a generic kit list.
- Check the dog’s tolerance. Ask about prior grooming, noise sensitivity and handling concerns. Introduce unfamiliar clippers and dryers gradually and provide breaks when needed.
- Verify equipment condition. Test cords, batteries, guards, blades, hinges, table stability and dryer controls before the dog is on the table. Remove unsafe equipment from service.
- Plan sanitation. Keep enough duplicate tools, clean storage and disinfectant capacity to complete the required cleaning cycle between dogs.
- Prepare safety supplies. Place first aid, eye wash, fire extinguisher and emergency-veterinarian contact information where staff can reach them immediately.
- Document exceptions. Record unusual skin findings, severe matting, tool intolerance, a shortened service or an owner referral so the next groomer has an accurate starting point.
Common tool-selection mistakes and fixes
Using one brush for every coat
Problem: A slicker, pin brush or short-bristle tool is used regardless of coat type. Fix: Match the brush and technique to length, density and texture, then verify the result with a comb when the coat allows.
Choosing a blade by number alone
Problem: A blade length is treated as universally safe or appropriate. Fix: Consider the intended finish, coat condition, blade compatibility, skin sensitivity and the clipper’s operating temperature together.
Letting heated air sit in one place
Problem: A dryer is aimed at one area or used on a high-heat setting. Fix: Use low heat, keep airflow moving, avoid the face and ears, and monitor the dog closely.
Skipping the comb check
Problem: Hair looks smooth on the surface but remains tangled underneath. Fix: Check sections with a sturdy metal comb where appropriate and stop when resistance indicates a mat or a sensitive area.
Disinfecting without following the label
Problem: Tools are sprayed and immediately reused, or chemicals are mixed. Fix: Remove debris, follow the label’s dilution and contact time, rinse or ventilate as directed, dry fully and store clean tools separately.
Training, scope and ongoing readiness
Tools cannot replace education in coat handling, humane restraint, sanitation, emergency response or recognizing when a condition is outside grooming scope. The AKC’s S.A.F.E. Dog Grooming program describes education in salon and groomer safety, pet care, accident avoidance, sanitation and special cases, with course completion and a test included in its stated eligibility path. The AKC Professional Grooming Credential page describes a credential valid for five years with a 25-hour continuing-education maintenance requirement. Program terms can change, so confirm current details directly with the AKC before relying on them.
For day-to-day work, the most reliable kit is the one staff can maintain, disinfect, operate safely and adapt to the dog on the table. Reassess tools when coats, services, equipment condition or staff training changes.
