Pugs are small, affectionate companion dogs with manageable grooming and moderate exercise needs, but their short-faced anatomy makes heat, breathing, eye health, and weight management especially important. The figures below describe breed tendencies and published standards—not guarantees for any individual dog.
1. Pugs are compact, small-statured dogs
The American Kennel Club (AKC) lists Pugs at 10–13 inches tall and 14–18 pounds. The Royal Kennel Club breed standard, last updated in April 2025, gives an ideal weight of 6.3–8.1 kilograms (14–18 pounds).

Those numbers are useful orientation when you are comparing a puppy with the breed profile, planning equipment, or discussing growth with a veterinarian. They are not a prescription for every dog. The Royal Kennel Club specifically says that a breed standard is a guide and does not mean every Pug will match the listed measurements. A healthy adult may sit outside a published range because of sex, frame, muscle, age, neuter status, or other individual factors. Body condition, mobility, and veterinary assessment matter more than reaching a number on a chart.
Compact does not mean fragile or inactive. A Pug’s close-to-the-ground build can suit apartment living, provided the dog receives appropriate daily activity and can rest in a cool, safe environment.

2. A Pug’s stated life expectancy is 13–15 years
The AKC gives Pugs a life-expectancy estimate of 13–15 years. This is a breed-profile range, not a promise for an individual dog and not a guarantee that every dog will reach it.
Planning for a potentially long commitment means considering care across puppyhood, adulthood, and senior years. Diet, body condition, dental and preventive care, exercise tolerance, inherited risks, environment, and access to veterinary treatment all influence an individual’s welfare. Keep records of vaccinations, parasite prevention, weight trends, breathing or eye changes, and any medication so that your veterinarian can identify patterns early.
When adopting or buying, ask what medical records are available for the puppy or adult and what is known about the parents’ health. Records cannot predict a precise lifespan, but they make it easier to establish baseline care and follow up on concerns.

3. The typical temperament is affectionate, outgoing, and lively
The AKC describes Pugs as affectionate, outgoing, and loving. The Royal Kennel Club standard describes an even-tempered, happy, and lively disposition. These are descriptions of common breed tendencies, not guarantees that every Pug will behave identically.

Many people choose the breed for close companionship. A Pug may prefer being near its people rather than spending long periods isolated, so assess your schedule before committing. Ask a breeder, rescue organization, or foster caregiver how a particular dog responds to handling, visitors, children, other animals, confinement, and ordinary household noise.
“Good family dog” is therefore an individual-and-household question. A friendly adult can be a rewarding family companion when children are taught to handle dogs gently and an adult supervises interactions. A dog that is fearful, painful, or poorly socialized may need a different management plan regardless of breed.
4. The coat is short and smooth, but Pugs shed noticeably
A short coat is easy to see and usually quick to wash, but it does not mean low shedding. Pugs shed, and loose hair can collect on clothing, furniture, bedding, and car interiors. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair before it spreads through the home.

Tools named by the breed-care guidance
| Tool | Best use in a basic routine | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Medium-bristle brush | Weekly brushing over the coat | Recommended by the AKC for removing loose hair |
| Rubber grooming mitt | Gentle weekly loose-hair removal while handling the dog | Recommended by the AKC as an alternative brush type |
| Hound glove | Weekly brushing when a glove-style tool is more comfortable for dog or owner | Also listed by the AKC; no product ranking or performance test is implied |
Introduce any tool gradually and stop if the dog shows pain, fear, or skin irritation. Regular nail trimming is also part of the AKC’s basic grooming advice. Check nails often enough that they do not begin to alter the dog’s gait; a veterinarian or qualified groomer can demonstrate a safe technique if you are uncertain.

5. Moderate, carefully paced exercise fits most Pugs
The AKC recommends daily opportunities for moderate exercise, such as walks or play. The Royal Kennel Club describes exercise needs of up to about an hour per day, split into shorter sessions. “Up to” is not a target that every Pug should meet: age, fitness, body condition, breathing, heat, and other health factors determine a safe amount.
A practical way to structure activity
- Choose cool periods. Walk early or late when temperatures and humidity are lower, and keep fresh water available.
- Use several short sessions. Two or more easy walks, gentle play periods, and sniffing time can provide activity without one prolonged effort.
- Watch the dog, not the clock. Slow down or end the session for unusual panting, distress, weakness, stumbling, or reluctance to continue, and seek veterinary advice when signs are concerning.
- Build gradually. Puppies, older dogs, and dogs returning from illness or inactivity need a slower increase than a fit adult.
Because Pugs are short-faced, heat requires particular caution. The AKC states: “It’s vital to remember that as a short-faced breed Pugs aren’t tolerant of hot weather, and they shouldn’t do strenuous exercise when it’s warm or humid out—better to be in air-conditioning.” Follow veterinary advice for an individual dog, and never use a warm or humid day to test endurance.
6. Short-faced anatomy makes breathing and eye health important considerations
The Royal Kennel Club identifies Pugs among the more flat-faced, or brachycephalic, breeds. Its brachycephalic-health guidance discusses airway and eye problems associated with this anatomy.

It does mean owners should not dismiss noisy, labored, or difficult breathing as automatically normal for the breed. Arrange veterinary assessment for changes such as breathing effort at rest, fainting, reduced tolerance for ordinary activity, bluish or gray gums, persistent coughing, eye pain, squinting, discharge, or a sudden change in vision. An emergency sign—such as severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or inability to recover—requires urgent veterinary care.

The Royal Kennel Club recommends BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) respiratory function grading and eye testing for Pugs before breeding. If you are considering a puppy, ask the breeder which tests were completed, on which parent, when, and by whom. Request copies of results and confirm that the registered names or identifying details match the parents being offered.
A screening result is evidence about the tested dog at a particular time; it is not a guarantee that a puppy will never develop a problem. Still, transparent records and willingness to discuss results are more informative than vague assurances. If a breeder cannot explain the tests or declines to show documentation, treat that as a reason to pause and seek independent veterinary or breed-club advice.
For an adult Pug from a rescue or private rehoming situation, the same principle applies: obtain the available history, arrange a veterinary examination, and budget for follow-up testing when the history is incomplete.

8. Food enthusiasm makes calorie and weight control essential
The AKC notes that Pugs often enjoy food and can be at risk of obesity. Measure meals, count treats and chews as part of daily calories, and reassess portions when activity, age, or health changes. A veterinarian can help choose an appropriate diet and determine whether a weight concern reflects excess fat, inadequate muscle, or another medical issue.
Do not use the 14–18-pound profile range as a target without considering the individual dog’s frame and body condition. A Pug that looks “within the standard” can still carry excess fat, while a larger-framed dog may be healthy above that range. Ask your veterinary team to show you how to feel the ribs, assess the waist and abdominal tuck, and track weight over time.
Use part of the daily ration for training when practical, and keep high-calorie extras occasional. Sudden dieting, meal skipping, or supplements marketed for weight loss should be discussed with a veterinarian first.
9. Training and family life require consistency, not a breed-wide promise
Breed descriptions cannot tell you whether every Pug will be easy to train. Individual motivation, early socialization, prior experiences, health, and the owner’s consistency all matter. Plan short, upbeat lessons; reward the behavior you want; and make household rules consistent among all caregivers. A qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional can adapt the plan if fear, frustration, or aggression appears.
Teach children to let the dog approach, avoid climbing on or startling it, and leave it alone while eating or sleeping. Provide a cool retreat that the dog can enter without being followed. For homes with cats or other dogs, use gradual introductions, separate resources at first, and supervision until the animals’ behavior is predictable.
Before adoption, write down who will handle walks, grooming, nail care, feeding, veterinary appointments, and hot-weather precautions. The breed’s companionable nature can be a strong fit for an involved household, but it is not a substitute for daily management.
10. A realistic Pug-care checklist helps you decide
Use this checklist before bringing a Pug home:
- Time: Can you provide daily moderate activity in shorter sessions, plus companionship and training?
- Climate: Is there reliable air-conditioning or another cool indoor space during warm or humid weather?
- Budget: Can you cover routine preventive care and possible evaluation of breathing, eyes, weight, or other concerns?
- Grooming: Will someone brush weekly, trim nails regularly, and manage the shedding that comes with a short coat?
- Weight plan: Will meals and treats be measured, with body condition reviewed rather than judged by a breed-standard number alone?
- Source: If buying from a breeder, will you review BOAS respiratory function grading and eye-test records for the parents?
- Emergency plan: Do you know which veterinary clinic to contact if breathing becomes difficult or the dog collapses?
The Pug Breed Council’s health overview also emphasizes body-condition management, feeding, and exercise. Combine that practical planning with the AKC profile and Royal Kennel Club guidance, then discuss the individual dog with a veterinarian. A Pug can be an engaging, affectionate companion when its exercise, temperature, grooming, calories, and short-faced health risks are managed deliberately.
