The zoo says clips of him being scolded by other macaques show social interactions within the troop, not serious aggression by any one monkey. That is the zoo’s interpretation, not something a short, edited video can establish on its own. The latest dated report on Punch’s progress, published by the Associated Press in July 2026, described him mingling and playing with the group. As of October 4, the zoo says viewing at Monkey Mountain is closed for improvement work through October 18, subject to delay.
Why Punch’s videos worried viewers
Footage circulated online in February and March 2026 showing Punch being scolded or dragged by other macaques. Many viewers interpreted the encounters as bullying. In a March 10 statement, Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden said it had received concern from Japan and abroad and reiterated its earlier explanation: “Although Punch has been scolded many times by other monkeys, no single monkey has shown serious aggression toward him.”
That is the zoo’s account of what it observed. A brief clip cannot show everything that happened before or after the moment filmed, or establish an animal’s overall health and welfare. The zoo has also cautioned that inaccurate material and AI-generated images and videos circulate online. Avoid treating reposted clips or claims about individual troop members as verified accounts.
What is known about Punch and his care
Why staff hand-reared him
Punch was born in July 2025. The zoo says his mother did not provide care, so staff hand-reared him. Its stated goal was to reintegrate him with other macaques. Before he began spending time in Monkey Mountain on January 19, 2026, he had gradual contact with the group through fences, time in the enclosure with caretakers, and interactions with a young female macaque that had been gentle with him.

Why he had a stuffed orangutan
The stuffed toy and towels were part of the zoo’s care approach, not simply a prop or a replacement mother. The zoo said they let Punch cling to something while helping prevent excessive dependence on human caretakers, and could comfort him when he perceived danger. In its February 27 statement, the zoo explained: “Providing a stuffed toy and towels to hold onto not only simulates clinging to a mother but also prevents excessive dependence on humans.”
Can scolding or chasing be normal macaque behavior?
It can be, depending on the context. Kim Skelton, Director of Primate Care and Conservation at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, says brief chases, displacement, vocal reprimands, and mild swats can be species-typical social correction as young macaques learn group boundaries. These behaviors may look harsh to people unfamiliar with macaque social life, but that does not mean every encounter is harmless.

Injury, the pattern and intensity of interactions, and the animal’s broader condition matter. Skelton says social isolation is a welfare concern for social primates and that Punch appearing to interact with troop members without significant injury is consistent with integration progressing in a typical manner. This is expert context, not a diagnosis of Punch’s health or welfare from a video.
What the latest reported update says
The latest dated account of Punch’s condition in the sources available here is an Associated Press report published July 25, 2026. AP described him mingling and playing with other macaques and no longer clinging to the plush toy. That report is a snapshot from July, not a live update for October. The zoo’s October notice concerns visitor access and does not provide a new health assessment.

Why Monkey Mountain viewing is closed in October
Ichikawa’s notice, updated August 5 and still posted in October, says Monkey Mountain viewing is unavailable through October 18, 2026, while the zoo installs shade and makes environmental improvements. The zoo says weather or construction delays could extend the closure, so check its official notice before visiting. The viewing restriction applies to Monkey Mountain; it is not evidence that Punch is ill or that the whole zoo is closed.
The zoo’s April visitor guidance asks people to remain quiet, stay out of prohibited areas, and avoid interrupting keepers monitoring the macaques. It warns that repeated rule violations could result in tighter viewing restrictions.

The zoo says it has no Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok accounts, so fan pages and lookalike accounts should not be treated as official sources.
The zoo’s June population-management statement says successful integration remains its top priority. It also says its forward breeding plan will limit births to virtually none or a very small number, following an increase in births in 2026. The zoo is considering future enrichment and facility improvements; that statement does not announce a specific new enclosure plan.
