A shark reportedly struck an underwater camera rig lowered into Belize’s Great Blue Hole, according to news accounts of a video by creator Will Mitchell. The reports describe an impact with the equipment—not an attack on a person. They do not identify the shark species, establish the depth of the contact, or verify the rig’s exact specifications.
What the reports say happened
Wonderful Engineering’s July 2024 account describes a homemade contraption fitted with dive weights, lights and a GoPro. It says a shark circled the rig, disappeared, then struck the camera. The outlet attributed the line “The shark just blitzed us” to the operator; the original clip could not be independently checked against that reported wording. Wonderful Engineering’s account
Indian Defence Review’s March 2025 coverage identifies Mitchell as the creator and links to a video titled “What’s At The Bottom Of Belize’s Blue Hole? Drone Vs. Sharks!” It likewise reports that a shark hit the GoPro-equipped device, but does not identify the species. Indian Defence Review’s report
These are secondary accounts of the footage, not a verified incident record. They establish neither the shark’s motive nor whether the rig was damaged. In particular, the reports do not establish that a person was attacked.

Was it really a drone?
Coverage uses “drone” in describing the video, but the equipment is more specifically described as a weighted homemade rig with lights and a GoPro. The available accounts do not give a precise model, housing, depth rating or deployment depth. Calling it a particular consumer drone—or treating it as a standard camera ready for deep-water use—would go beyond what is established.
Where is the Great Blue Hole?
The Great Blue Hole is the Blue Hole Natural Monument in Belize’s Lighthouse Reef area. UNESCO lists it among the seven protected areas that make up the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, and describes the Blue Hole as one of the area’s notable geological features. Wonderful Engineering and a 2024 LADbible report describe a hydrogen-sulfide boundary at about 90 metres. These are secondary descriptions of the Hole’s conditions, not a verified measurement of where the camera was struck. UNESCO’s listing provides geological and protected-area context; it does not document the video encounter. The reporting available here identifies the animal only as a shark. UNESCO’s general references to great hammerheads in the wider area do not identify the individual in this incident.
