Videos and local reports published on February 11–12, 2024 showed dense mosquito swarms near Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, and Kharadi Gavthan in Pune. News accounts linked the episode to elevated water levels along the Mula-Mutha river and conditions that might favor breeding, but they did not prove the cause, identify the mosquitoes, or document disease transmission connected to the event.
Where and when the swarms were reported
News9’s February 11, 2024 video coverage described swarms in Keshavnagar and Kharadi Gavthan, associating the increase with higher water levels along the river from Mundhwa Bridge toward Kharadi Gaonthan. Scroll reported on February 12 that videos showed swarms around Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, and Kharadi. News9’s report and Scroll’s account describe a localized nuisance, not a measured survey of mosquito numbers.

On February 12, Business Standard quoted Nitin, a Kharadi resident, describing the disruption: “Recently I have seen a lot of mosquitoes. For three or four days there has been a tornado of mosquitoes here in Kharadi. Everything has become hard & there have been a lot of problems due to this…” His words convey a resident’s experience; “tornado” is a figurative description of the swarm, not a meteorological event or verified mosquito behavior. Business Standard’s report attributes the statement to him.

What was said about the cause—and what remains unproven
News coverage associated the swarms with elevated river levels and possible breeding conditions. Scroll relayed an explanation involving higher water levels, weaker flow, and weather. Posts on social media also blamed construction and water hyacinth, but those were resident claims rather than verified findings.

The reports do not establish which conditions caused this particular episode. They also do not identify the mosquito species, quantify the swarm, or document disease transmission linked to it. The videos and residents’ concerns alone are not evidence of a local disease outbreak.
What municipal workers reportedly did
News9 reported that Pune Municipal Corporation workers began removing excess water and water hyacinth after complaints. The account does not establish whether that work reduced the swarms or what the intervention’s current status is. Residents should not attempt to treat or alter a river or other public waterway themselves; community mosquito control requires local assessment and coordinated action.

What residents can do to reduce bites at home
Household precautions can reduce mosquito entry and exposure, but they do not address river conditions or establish the cause of the Pune swarms.

- Use repellent as directed: Cover exposed skin where practical and apply a labeled repellent according to its directions, following WHO’s personal-protection guidance.
- Remove small household water sources: Empty and clean, or cover, containers that hold water. CDC recommends removing standing water around the home as part of prevention.
- Consider indoor insecticide only as a later step: CDC household guidance discusses indoor insecticide if mosquitoes remain after screens are repaired and water-holding containers are addressed. Follow product labeling and applicable safety directions.
CDC describes community mosquito control as a coordinated process involving surveillance, habitat reduction, larval and adult control, and evaluation. The appropriate response depends on local conditions and public-health professionals’ judgment: CDC community mosquito-control guidance.
