Madhuri, also known as Mahadevi, was transferred from Kolhapur to Gujarat’s Vantara in July 2025 after a Bombay High Court rehabilitation order. In August 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state would seek her return through a Supreme Court review petition. The latest reported development is different: in September 2026, a Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee permitted her return to Kolhapur, subject to conditions. News reports said her journey had begun, but her arrival has not been independently confirmed in the sources cited here.
What happened to Madhuri?
Madhuri and Mahadevi are names used in reports for the same elephant. She was moved from a math in Kolhapur to Vantara, a wildlife facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, in July 2025. The transfer followed a Bombay High Court order for her rehabilitation, according to Scroll’s August 2025 report.

The move drew protests in Kolhapur. On August 5, 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state would file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking her return. That was an announcement of an intended legal step; the available reporting does not establish whether the petition was filed or how the Supreme Court ruled on it. Scroll reported the next day that Vantara had agreed to join the petition.

In September 2026, the Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee reportedly permitted Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur, subject to conditions. This is a later procedural development than the state’s 2025 announcement. The reports reviewed do not establish that the planned review petition caused the committee’s decision.

- Measures approximately 9" long x 8.5" wide, when sitting down
The Times of India reported on September 10, 2026, that the return journey had begun. It quoted directions for the math to take possession of Madhuri and transport her from Jamnagar to its facility at Nandani, Kolhapur, at the math’s own risk, and said the chief wildlife wardens of Gujarat and Maharashtra were to complete the transfer paperwork and formalities. The report attributes the decision to the committee; its original September 9 order is not available in the sources cited here.
A September 11 Vantara statement, as reported by coverage of the decision, described further conditions, including no use of Madhuri in processions, round-the-clock care and veterinary examinations every fortnight. Those details should be understood as Vantara’s account of the conditions, not as independently verified wording from the committee order.

What the 2025 Supreme Court order did—and did not—decide
A separate Supreme Court order dated September 15, 2025, in C.R. Jaya Sukin vs Union of India, concerned broader Vantara-related proceedings. The Court accepted a Special Investigation Team report and recorded that allegations in those petitions lacked probative material. It also referred to the High-Powered Committee’s decisions concerning elephant transfers.
That order was not the committee’s later decision permitting Madhuri’s return. The two proceedings should not be treated as the same ruling or as evidence that the Supreme Court itself ordered her return in September 2026. The distinction is set out in the September 15, 2025 Supreme Court order.

What Vantara said about a possible return
In November 2025, Vantara said it would support an application by the math and Maharashtra seeking Madhuri’s return, subject to court approval. It also offered technical and veterinary assistance and proposed support for a satellite rehabilitation centre in Nandani. These were commitments and a proposal described by Vantara, not confirmation that a centre was established. The statement is available on Vantara’s website.

Published accounts say the committee permitted a return and that the journey began on September 10, 2026. They also describe restrictions on use and continuing veterinary care. The evidence cited here does not confirm that Madhuri reached Kolhapur, nor does it provide the committee’s complete order or an independent veterinary assessment of her condition. For those details, the reported progress should not be mistaken for confirmation of arrival or a full assessment of her welfare.
