Puppies need a series of vaccines—not a single visit—and parasite treatment that starts in early life. In the U.S., the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends at least three doses of core combination vaccine between 6 and 16 weeks, while the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends beginning puppy deworming at 2 weeks. Your veterinarian should tailor the plan to your puppy’s records, health, location, exposure, product labels, and local rabies law.
What is the usual puppy vaccine schedule?
AAHA’s schedule for puppies 16 weeks and younger calls for at least three doses of the core combination vaccine between 6 and 16 weeks, spaced 2–4 weeks apart. The combination covers canine distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus; parainfluenza may also be included. The parvovirus guidance gives 6–8 weeks as the minimum starting age for the primary puppy protocol. Because maternal antibodies can interfere with vaccination, completing the series matters.
AAHA’s guideline page, originally published in 2022 and updated in 2024 to include leptospirosis as a core recommendation for all dogs, also lists a separate leptospirosis series: two doses of a four-serovar killed vaccine, starting at 12 weeks and spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Follow the specific product label and your veterinarian’s plan.
| Vaccine | Initial puppy protocol in AAHA guidance | Follow-up in AAHA guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus combination (parainfluenza may be included) | At least 3 doses between 6 and 16 weeks, 2–4 weeks apart | First-year booster within 1 year after the last initial-series dose; then boosters at 3-year intervals as indicated in the schedule |
| Leptospirosis | 2 doses starting at 12 weeks, 2–4 weeks apart | Annual boosters after the initial series |
| Rabies | As required by law; a universal age or interval is not specified here | Follow local legal requirements |
These are AAHA guideline recommendations, not a substitute for a clinician’s decision or the vaccine label. See AAHA’s vaccine schedule and its canine parvovirus guidance.

Which additional vaccines might a puppy need?
Some vaccines are selected according to the dog’s lifestyle, geographic area, and likely exposure rather than given routinely to every dog. AAHA lists Lyme, Bordetella, canine influenza, and Western diamondback rattlesnake toxoid as noncore examples.
- Lyme and canine influenza: AAHA’s table lists two initial doses 2–4 weeks apart, followed by a dose within a year and annual boosters.
- Bordetella: The schedule depends on formulation and route. The table includes single-dose intranasal or oral protocols and a two-dose injectable protocol.
- Other exposure-based vaccines: Discuss whether local disease risk or your puppy’s activities make them appropriate.
AAHA describes its recommendations as discretionary guidance, not an exclusive protocol, and says clinicians should account for the individual dog and the specific vaccine instructions. Its executive summary offers the rule of thumb, “When in doubt, vaccinate,” within that patient-specific context. Read AAHA’s executive summary.

When should puppies be dewormed?
CAPC’s general guidance recommends starting anthelmintic treatment at 2 weeks of age and repeating it every 2 weeks until regular broad-spectrum parasite control begins. CAPC recommends year-round broad-spectrum control, with a veterinarian choosing the appropriate product.
If continuous year-round control cannot be maintained, CAPC describes a fallback schedule: treat every 2 weeks until 2 months of age, monthly until 6 months, and quarterly thereafter. This is general guidance, not a direction to give a particular medicine; product age and weight limits and parasite coverage vary.

CAPC’s hookworm guidance gives a more specific schedule for puppies and their dams: treatment when puppies are 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks old. If treatment begins at 6–8 weeks or later, CAPC advises a monthly preventive according to label directions, another deworming in two weeks, and monthly prevention thereafter. Your veterinarian can reconcile these recommendations with the puppy’s age, previous treatments, and product label.
How often should a puppy have a fecal test?
CAPC recommends fecal examinations at least four times in the first year of life. The frequency can be adjusted for health, environmental exposure, and lifestyle. Depending on the clinical situation, testing methods may include fecal flotation, antigen testing, PCR, or AI. CAPC’s hookworm guidance separately describes fecal examinations 2–4 times in the first year to monitor treatment and prevention; your veterinarian can set a schedule suitable for your puppy.

A negative fecal test does not always rule out a concerning infection. Hookworms can cause severe illness, including anemia, and illness may develop before eggs appear in feces. Contact a veterinarian promptly if a puppy has diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, pale gums, poor growth, visible worms, or known parasite exposure.

- Bring the records you have. Share the puppy’s birth date, vaccine and deworming history, any breeder or shelter paperwork, and information about symptoms or exposures.
- Ask the veterinarian to map the vaccine series. Confirm which core and risk-based vaccines are appropriate, when each dose is due, and how local rabies law applies.
- Agree on parasite prevention and testing. Ask which product fits the puppy’s age, weight, and likely parasites, when to start it, and when to bring a fecal sample.
- Keep the plan current as the puppy grows. Report changes in health or exposure and follow the clinician’s schedule and each product’s label.
AAHA guidance is available at its canine vaccination guideline page. CAPC’s recommendations are in General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats and its Hookworms guidance.
