Their eyes make efficient use of available light and are especially suited to dusk, dawn, and nighttime conditions. The American Kennel Club’s chief veterinary officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, attributes dogs’ low-light advantage to their eye anatomy and ability to detect movement.
That advantage has limits. A dog that suddenly struggles in dim conditions may have an eye or retinal disorder rather than ordinary canine vision.
How well can dogs see at night?
Dogs generally navigate dim environments better than humans do, particularly when there is some light from the moon, streetlights, windows, or other sources. Their vision is not the same as the image produced by night-vision equipment. In low light, dogs are better at detecting broad shapes and movement than at seeing fine detail.
The exact minimum amount of light a dog needs has not been established. The important distinction is between low light and no light: canine eyes can make efficient use of available light, but they cannot create an image where no light reaches the eye. The American Kennel Club explains dogs’ vision.

Why dogs have an advantage in low light
Several parts of a dog’s eye work together to improve vision after dark.
More rod cells
Rods are retinal photoreceptors especially sensitive to dim light and movement. Dogs have more rods than cones; cones are more important for color and daylight vision. This helps dogs notice movement in low light, though it does not give them sharp detail. The American Kennel Club describes these adaptations.
The tapetum lucidum
Behind the retina, many dogs have a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. It reflects incoming light back through the retina, giving light-sensitive cells another opportunity to detect it. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists explains eyeshine.
Light-gathering eyes
Dogs also have eye structures that help admit and use available light, including pupils that become large in darkness. The trade-off is that low-light vision favors sensitivity over sharpness. A dog may notice that something is present without seeing its edges or color clearly. The American Kennel Club provides more detail.

Why do dogs’ eyes glow in the dark?
The apparent glow is usually eyeshine: light from a camera flash, torch, car headlight, or another source reflecting from the tapetum lucidum. Depending on the dog and the angle of the light, the reflection may look yellow, green, blue, orange, or red. Its appearance can also change during the first few months of life.
Not every dog has a visible reflective tapetum. Some dogs, including some blue-eyed dogs, may show a red reflection in photographs because blood vessels and structures at the back of the eye are visible instead. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists discusses variations in eyeshine.
A normal eyeshine pattern is not a guarantee that a dog’s vision is healthy. Arrange a veterinary examination if the reflection suddenly changes in brightness or color, or if one eye reflects noticeably differently from the other. Those changes can be associated with eye disease.
Can dogs see colors in the dark?
Dogs do not see only in black and white. Their color vision is more limited than human color vision, and blue and yellow are generally easier for them to distinguish than many other colors.

In very dim light, color becomes less useful. The visual system prioritizes available light, contrast, and movement, so a dog may not distinguish colors well even though it can detect an object moving nearby. The American Kennel Club explains canine color vision.
How to tell whether poor night vision is a problem
Some hesitation in a new or unfamiliar dark place can be normal. Persistent or worsening difficulty seeing at night deserves attention, especially if it is a change from the dog’s usual behavior. Signs worth discussing with a veterinarian include:
- Reluctance to enter a dark room or go outside after sunset
- Hesitation on stairs
- Bumping into furniture, door frames, or other objects, particularly in unfamiliar places
- Persistently enlarged pupils
- A newly unusual or highly reflective appearance in the eyes
- A sudden change in vision or ability to navigate
- Redness, cloudiness, squinting, rubbing, discharge, or signs of pain
These signs do not identify a specific disease, but they are good reasons to contact a veterinarian. Sudden vision changes, eye pain, marked redness, or a cloudy eye should be treated as more urgent.
Night blindness and retinal disease
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) often first appears as reduced night vision. Rod cells deteriorate before cone cells, so a dog may initially struggle in darkness while still seeing reasonably well during the day. PRA is usually gradual and painless, but it can eventually lead to blindness. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes PRA.

Sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) is a different condition that can cause rapid vision loss over several days. A veterinary ophthalmologist may use an electroretinogram to help confirm the diagnosis. A dog that loses vision suddenly needs prompt veterinary assessment rather than a period of observation at home. The Merck Veterinary Manual provides information on SARDS.
How to help a dog with declining night vision
Cornell’s veterinary guidance recommends practical changes to make home and outdoor movement safer:
- Add lighting. Improve lighting inside and outside the home, especially around steps, doorways, and the route to the toilet.
- Keep the layout consistent. Avoid moving furniture, food bowls, and other obstacles without giving the dog time to adjust.
- Block stairs and hazards. Use safety gates to prevent falls while the dog is learning to navigate with reduced vision.
- Use a leash outside. Keep the dog on a leash in unfamiliar areas.
- Strengthen verbal cues. Teach reliable commands before vision loss progresses.
Dogs often compensate well with their hearing, smell, and memory. A predictable home and calm verbal guidance can make nighttime movement much safer. See Cornell’s guidance on living with PRA.

Can dogs see in total darkness?
No. Dogs see better than humans in low light, but they still need at least some available light. In complete darkness, they cannot form a normal visual image.

Why do my dog’s eyes shine at night?
Light is usually reflecting from the tapetum lucidum, a layer behind the retina that helps the eye use dim light. The reflection can vary in color. A new difference between the two eyes or a sudden change in the reflection should be checked by a veterinarian.
Do dogs see in black and white?
No. Dogs have limited color vision rather than purely black-and-white vision. Blue and yellow are generally easier for them to distinguish, while dim light reduces the usefulness of color.
Is it normal for a dog to struggle in the dark?
A little hesitation in an unfamiliar place can be normal, but persistent, worsening, or sudden difficulty seeing at night may indicate a problem such as progressive retinal atrophy or another eye disorder. Contact your veterinarian if you notice a change.
The Bottom Line
Dogs are better equipped than people to see in low light, thanks to rod-rich retinas, large pupils, and—in many dogs—the reflective tapetum lucidum. They still cannot see in complete darkness, and their nighttime vision is better for detecting movement than for seeing fine detail or color. New or worsening trouble in the dark, especially with eye redness, cloudiness, pain, or sudden vision loss, warrants veterinary advice.
