Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Pet Care Provider

Interview any pet care provider about pet-specific experience, exact services, training, references, insurance, communication, backup care, fees and emergencies. Meet the provider with your pet, inspect the care setting and leave written veterinary authorization and daily instructions.

The safest choice is the provider whose experience matches your individual pet, whose handling you can observe, and whose services, fees and emergency authority are written down. Interview the person—not just a profile or platform listing—then arrange a meeting with your pet before you commit.

Prepare before you interview anyone

Write down the facts a provider must understand: your pet’s species, breed or type, age, size, temperament, exercise needs, medical conditions, medications, triggers, escape habits and normal eating, toileting and sleeping patterns. Note what service you need and the dates, times and location. A clear brief lets you compare answers instead of choosing the person who simply sounds most confident.

Ask the same core questions of every serious candidate. Adapt them to the animal and service: dog-walking questions about leash behavior do not replace questions about a cat’s medication or a rabbit’s temperature-sensitive housing.

The essential interview questions

1. What experience do you have with pets like mine?

Ask for specifics rather than a general claim such as “I love animals.” Discuss species, size, age, temperament, medical needs and behavior issues. A provider for a large adolescent dog should be able to explain how they manage pulling, jumping or dog reactivity; a provider for an elderly cat should understand reduced mobility, appetite changes and medication routines.

For walking, ask how the person handles leash frustration, fear, resource guarding, introductions and encounters with other dogs. For sitting, ask whether they have cared for pets with separation distress, house-soiling, seizures, diabetes or mobility limitations. For grooming, ask about coat type, past handling of nervous animals and any experience with pets that cannot stand for long periods.

A credible candidate should welcome a conversation about your pet’s routine and special needs and should want to meet the pet before accepting the booking.

2. What exactly will the service include?

Turn a vague service label into observable actions and times. For a dog walker, ask:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where will the walk take place?
  • Is it solo, paired or a larger group?
  • How long is the dog actually walking, and how much time is spent collecting dogs or driving?
  • Will the dog be transported, and if so, in what restraint?
  • What happens during extreme heat, storms, ice or poor air quality?

For in-home sitting, establish how often the provider will visit, the approximate arrival window, the length of each visit, whether the person stays overnight and what household tasks are included. Clarify whether “overnight” means a continuous stay or a late visit followed by an early return.

For boarding in the provider’s home, ask how many animals are present, where your pet sleeps, how feeding and medication are separated, what outdoor access exists and what the daily schedule looks like. Visit the setting before you agree.

For grooming, list each included service—such as bath, brush-out, nail trim, ear cleaning, clipping or drying—and identify add-on charges. Ask how long the pet may be crated, how the facility handles breaks and what happens if the groom cannot be completed safely.

3. What training have you completed?

Ask about pet first-aid training, formal animal-care courses and relevant supervised experience. Request the course name, provider and date when an answer is presented as a credential. Training is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee of sound judgment; weigh it with references and the person’s observed interaction with your pet.

Ask what the provider would do while waiting for veterinary advice after a bite, fall, heat illness, allergic reaction, poisoning, breathing problem or suspected ingestion. You are testing whether the person recognizes an emergency and will act promptly, not asking them to diagnose or replace a veterinarian.

4. Can you provide references, and are you insured and appropriately licensed?

Contact references yourself. Ask how long the person cared for the animal, whether schedules were reliable, how updates were handled, whether an emergency occurred and whether the final bill matched the agreement. A polished online profile or app listing does not establish the individual’s competence.

Ask what insurance covers: injury to your pet, injury to a person, damage to your home, lost keys and care provided away from the home may be treated differently. Ask for the insurer and policy limits if the provider represents that coverage exists.

Licensing and permit requirements vary by location and service. Ask what applies where the care will occur and verify the answer with the relevant local authority. Do not assume that a rule for a boarding kennel also applies to a solo dog walker or a mobile groomer.

5. How will you communicate during care?

Agree on the channel—text, phone, email or an app—and the update schedule before the first visit. A brief daily update is a reasonable baseline for many dog-walking arrangements, while overnight sitting may justify a morning and evening message. Decide whether updates include a photo, walk duration, food and medication confirmation or toileting notes.

Ask exactly how the provider will reach you if your pet’s behavior, appetite, stool, urination, energy or health changes. Give a primary number and an alternate decision-maker, and make sure the provider knows which contact is authorized to act if you are unreachable.

6. What happens if you are sick, delayed or there is an emergency?

Ask who provides backup care, whether you can meet that person in advance and whether the backup has been screened and insured on the same terms. A promise to “find someone” after a problem is not a plan.

Walk through scenarios: the provider is locked out, a flight is delayed, the pet escapes, the home loses power, a storm blocks travel, or the animal needs urgent veterinary attention. Establish who transports the pet, which clinic is used, how the clinic receives authorization and how you are notified.

Write an alternate decision-maker and a spending limit for emergency treatment. State whether the provider may authorize stabilization up to a specified amount, must obtain approval for nonurgent treatment, or should follow another instruction. The provider should know what to do if no contact can be reached.

7. What are your written terms and fees?

Request a written agreement before booking. It should identify the pet, service, dates, visit windows, duration, location, rate, payment timing, supplies included, cancellation rules, holiday or additional-pet charges, weather contingencies, access instructions and emergency veterinary release.

Ask whether the quoted rate is per visit, per hour, per night, per pet or per household. Confirm minimum bookings, travel fees, key or lockbox arrangements and the amount charged for late cancellation or an extra visit. Have the provider explain any term you cannot interpret; do not rely on a verbal promise that is absent from the agreement.

8. Can we meet with my pet before I decide?

Use the meeting as an observation, not a formality. Notice whether the person moves calmly, gives the animal space, follows your handling instructions and asks sensible questions. Watch your pet’s body language: hiding, freezing, repeated lip-licking, tucked tail or escalating growling may mean the introduction needs to slow down or that this match is unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a walker, request a short test walk if your pet can tolerate one. For a sitter, rehearse feeding, leash attachment, crate use and medication. For boarding in the provider’s home, inspect the sleeping, feeding and exercise areas and compare the setting with your pet’s needs. A provider who will not meet the pet should be treated cautiously.

Compare providers on the dimensions that matter

Do not rank every provider with one generic score. Select the criteria that fit the service, then record the answers in writing.

Comparison area Dog walking In-home sitting or boarding Grooming
Pet-specific handling Leash skills, reactivity, group compatibility and transport Routine, separation needs, medical care and escape prevention Coat, restraint tolerance, anxiety and prior grooming experience
Care setting and duration Solo or group; route; actual walking time Visit frequency, stay length, overnight meaning or home environment Facility layout, ventilation, crating, breaks and expected completion time
Safety preparation First-aid knowledge, weather plan and vehicle restraint Backup person, emergency transport and veterinary authority First-aid coverage, incident plan and safe handling equipment
Verification References, applicable insurance and local requirements References, applicable insurance and local requirements References, insurance and any facility or professional requirements
Communication and cost Update frequency, rate basis and cancellation fee Updates, household tasks, overnight rate and cancellation terms Included services, add-ons, pickup timing and cancellation terms

A lower price is not a bargain if it buys shorter care, group handling your dog cannot manage or no workable emergency coverage. Choose the provider who can meet the pet’s needs reliably under the terms you can verify.

Inspect the environment and service-specific safeguards

When care occurs in the provider’s home

Check fencing, doors, gates, windows, sleeping arrangements, separation areas and access to water. Ask how resident animals and visiting pets are introduced and separated during feeding. Confirm the daily exercise and rest schedule, noise level and supervision. Remove assumptions about “pet-friendly” spaces: a home may be comfortable for one animal but unsafe for a climber, escape artist or dog that guards food.

When hiring a groomer

Inspect cleanliness and ventilation. Ask whether someone familiar with pet first aid is present, how injuries or overheating are handled, what insurance covers and how an emergency veterinary visit is authorized. Ask how tools are disinfected, how animals are supervised between appointments and how the groomer responds when a pet becomes distressed. Confirm the total price, including any matting, handling or specialty-coat charge, before work begins.

Red flags that should change your decision

  • The provider refuses to meet your pet or discourages a trial visit when one is appropriate.
  • They cannot describe a backup person, emergency contact process or urgent-vet plan.
  • They will not provide references or give references who cannot discuss specific care.
  • They are vague about what a visit includes, how long it lasts or what the fee covers.
  • They dismiss your pet’s medical, behavioral or escape risks as unimportant.
  • They rely on a listing, reviews or a credential as the only proof of competence.
  • The grooming area is dirty, poorly ventilated or unable to explain supervision and first-aid arrangements.
  • They pressure you to pay or hand over keys before providing written terms.

One awkward answer is not automatically disqualifying, but an unwillingness to answer basic safety and accountability questions is a meaningful warning.

Build a written handoff packet

Give the provider a concise, current document and demonstrate anything that is easy to misunderstand. Include:

  • Your name, mobile number, travel details and an alternate contact with authority to act.
  • The veterinarian’s name, phone number and clinic location, plus any emergency hospital your veterinarian recommends.
  • Feeding portions, timing, treats, water instructions and food sensitivities.
  • Every medication’s name, purpose, dose, route, timing and storage; demonstrate administration when necessary.
  • Permission and limits for emergency veterinary treatment, including the agreed spending authorization.
  • Home access, alarm and lockbox instructions, house rules, thermostat limits and rooms or items that are off-limits.
  • Where food, leash, carrier or crate, cleaning supplies and the pet first-aid kit are stored.
  • Escape-prevention rules, door and gate checks, identification and microchip details, and what to do if the pet gets out.

Keep hazardous foods, medicines, chemicals, cords and small objects out of reach. Show the provider where waste is disposed of and how to clean an accident. Tell the veterinary office who is authorized to seek care when appropriate, so a delay does not arise from uncertainty about permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a simple final decision process

  1. Eliminate unsafe matches. Remove candidates who cannot meet the pet, explain emergency coverage, supply references or provide clear written terms.
  2. Check fit, not charm. Compare the person’s demonstrated handling with your pet’s species, size, age, temperament, health and routine.
  3. Verify practical details. Confirm schedule, care setting, communication, insurance or licensing claims, total price and cancellation conditions.
  4. Run a trial when possible. Start with a short walk, visit or grooming appointment and review how your pet behaves afterward.
  5. Finalize the handoff. Sign the agreement, exchange contacts, provide written instructions and confirm veterinary authority before regular care begins.

Convenience should not override quality, and technology should not undermine professionalism. A dependable provider is the one who combines suitable experience with observable care, transparent terms and a rehearsed response when ordinary plans fail.
