Quinton was only five weeks old when a good Samaritan found him alone on the streets of Los Angeles with a missing back paw. A shelter transfer, careful treatment, surgery and foster care eventually led him to Shirley Bell, who renamed him “Q.”
His story, reported by Best Friends Animal Society on April 5, 2017, is one kitten’s account of surviving a dangerous wound and adjusting to life on three legs—not a universal guide to treating tripod cats.

A tiny kitten arrives at the shelter
Quinton’s journey began with a chance rescue. At five weeks old, he was found alone on Los Angeles streets with a back paw missing. The person who discovered him took him to a city shelter, giving the kitten an immediate chance to receive food, warmth and professional attention rather than remain exposed outdoors.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe source does not identify how Quinton lost the paw or how long he had been alone. Those details matter because a single rescue story cannot establish what caused his injury or predict how another kitten with a similar appearance will fare. What is clear is that his condition required more than a routine shelter stay.

Best Friends Animal Society brought Quinton to its kitten nursery the same day. Moving him into a nursery placed him in an environment designed for vulnerable young cats, where staff could watch his wound, provide medication and monitor his behavior while deciding what treatment would give him the safest recovery.
Why a healed wound still posed a danger
When Quinton reached Best Friends, the wound had already healed on the surface. That did not mean the problem was over. The uncleaned nub left behind where his paw had been was susceptible to infection, according to the account. The medical team prescribed antibiotics and rest while they observed how the area responded.
This distinction is central to Quinton’s case: visible healing and full medical safety were not the same thing. The staff had to protect a very young kitten from an infection developing at the injured end of the leg. Antibiotics addressed the immediate risk, while rest limited activity during the early stage of care.

Those omissions are important. Readers should not try to copy Quinton’s care for another animal; a veterinarian would need to examine the wound, assess infection and choose treatment for that individual cat.
Recurrent infections changed the treatment decision
Despite the initial care, Quinton’s leg continued to get infected. Best Friends veterinarians considered whether a prosthetic foot could provide another option. The story does not describe a particular device, fitting process, price or expected success rate, so there is no product comparison to draw from the account.

Ultimately, the veterinary team chose amputation. Their stated reason was to prevent infections that could become life-threatening and to improve Quinton’s health and comfort. This was a decision for this kitten after recurrent problems; the article does not present amputation as the right answer for every cat with a missing paw or injured limb.
Framing the decision as a sequence helps explain it. Quinton arrived with a missing paw, received antibiotics and rest, continued to experience infection, and then underwent surgery when the risk remained serious. The prosthetic possibility was considered before the team settled on the option they believed would remove the source of repeated infection.
Because the source is a rescue feature rather than a clinical report, it does not provide operative details, anesthesia information, pathology results or a recovery timetable. The useful takeaway is the reasoning reported by the rescue team: repeated infection made the status quo unsafe, and surgery was selected to protect the kitten’s long-term wellbeing.
Recovery after surgery
Recovery revealed a side of Quinton that could not be measured in a chart. Samantha Bell, identified as Best Friends’ cat behavior and enrichment lead, visited while he was healing and remembered: “He was still purring and making biscuits and saying hi to me.” The behaviors she described—purring, kneading and greeting a familiar person—show a kitten remaining socially engaged during a difficult period.
Bell also said, “He’s a little fighter, but still so full of love and affection.” Her description gives the emotional center of the story without suggesting that every tripod kitten will behave in the same way. Quinton’s personality, not only his surgery, shaped the next stage of his placement.

Once Quinton had recovered enough to leave medical supervision, he went to a foster home with Samantha Bell. Foster care created a bridge between treatment and adoption. Instead of moving directly from surgery into an unknown permanent setting, Quinton could regain strength and show how he interacted with people in a home environment.
The source does not list the length of his foster stay or describe a special exercise plan. It does show that the transition was successful: Quinton moved from a kitten nursery, through surgery and recovery, into a household where his temperament and abilities could be seen outside a clinical setting.
That step also kept the focus on the individual cat. A foster caregiver could observe what Quinton enjoyed, how he navigated his surroundings and what kind of family might suit him. The account presents fostering as part of his particular rescue path, not as a promise that every injured kitten will follow the same timetable.
Shirley Bell adopts him and chooses the name Q
Quinton was later adopted by Shirley Bell, who called him “Q.” Adoption turned a temporary rescue placement into a permanent home. The name is a small detail, but it marks the point at which the kitten’s identity became part of a family’s daily life rather than a case being managed by shelter staff.

Shirley described how Q followed her around the home. That attachment suggests he sought out ordinary companionship after the upheaval of rescue, treatment and surgery. The account does not claim that following a person is a medical sign; it is simply one of the behaviors Shirley noticed in her adopted cat.
Q also climbed to the top of the family’s cat tree and watched birds from a window. These scenes answer the question many readers have after hearing about his amputation: what happened after the crisis? Q’s life included climbing, looking outdoors and participating in household routines.
Shirley said, “I’m amazed that he can climb up to the very top of the cat tree, even though he’s missing one of his back legs.” Her observation is specific to Q’s home and abilities. The cat tree appears in the story as an enrichment feature that Q enjoyed, not as a therapeutic requirement or a recommendation for all tripod cats.

What this story does—and does not—tell us about tripod kittens
Quinton’s case demonstrates a rescue sequence: safe intake, monitoring, medication, a change in treatment when infection persisted, recovery, fostering and adoption. It also shows why a kitten who arrives with an apparently healed injury may still need close veterinary attention.
It does not establish a general survival rate, average cost, rehabilitation schedule or standard choice between a prosthesis and amputation. The article reports no named statistics or study data. It also does not say that every three-legged cat will climb a cat tree, tolerate the same activities or require the same home setup.

For anyone caring for an injured kitten, the responsible lesson is to seek an examination rather than infer a diagnosis from Q’s experience. A veterinarian must determine whether a wound is infected, whether tissue is viable and which treatment is appropriate. Quinton’s antibiotics, rest and eventual surgery belong to his medical history, not a do-it-yourself plan.
Why Q’s adoption outcome matters
Rescue stories often end at surgery, but Q’s adoption is the outcome that completes this one. Medical intervention made it possible for him to move forward, yet the account spends equal attention on his behavior in a home: greeting people, following his adopter, climbing and watching birds.
Those details replace an assumption that disability defines a cat’s whole life. Q is introduced first as a fragile kitten with a dangerous infection and later as a companion with preferences and routines. The contrast is the point of the story: the missing leg remains part of his body, but it is not the only fact about him.
Best Friends published the account on April 5, 2017. For the original narrative and the rescue organization’s wording, read “A tripod kitten’s brave journey”.
