Adults must be ready to supervise daily care, pay for a suitable environment and ongoing supplies, arrange veterinary care, and remain responsible for the rabbit—often for 8 to 12 years or longer. Children can take part, but the household’s adults need to be able to provide and fund care for the animal’s whole life.
Are rabbits a good pet for children?
They may suit a family when adults take responsibility and children are old enough to interact calmly and gently. The RSPCA says rabbits are generally better suited to older children who can handle them carefully, with adults prepared to help and take over. Its guidance is clear: “No child should be the sole owner of any animal – adult supervision is always recommended.” RSPCA rabbit-care guidance

Rabbits are fragile, and many do not enjoy being picked up. Children can build a relationship by sitting quietly at ground level and letting a rabbit approach, rather than chasing or lifting it. An adult should supervise interactions and take over if the rabbit seems frightened or the child cannot be gentle.

How long do rabbits live?
The RSPCA says rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years or longer when kept in good conditions. RSPCA rabbit-care guidance That can span a child’s move through school years and into adulthood. What does rabbit care cost?
There is no universal price: local costs, housing choices, veterinary needs, and whether you adopt one rabbit or a compatible pair all matter. A current UK illustration is the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund’s estimate, published 28 May 2026: more than £17,500 over ten years for two rabbits, including setup and its listed routine-care assumptions, but excluding unexpected veterinary bills. This is an organizational estimate, not a quote for every household or a figure that can be transferred directly to other countries. RWAF’s 2026 cost estimate
What the 2026 UK estimate includes
RWAF itemizes its example as £3,770 for initial setup, £85 per month for routine items, and £430 per year for additional costs. The monthly list includes hay (£20), good-quality food (£10), bedding (£10), fresh vegetables (£30), and insurance (£30); the annual items include vaccines and two weeks of boarding. RWAF also estimates dental procedures at around £300 per rabbit. These are RWAF’s 2026 assumptions, not guaranteed local prices. Unexpected veterinary bills are extra.

For context only, an RSPCA Companion Animals Department factsheet dated 3 May 2012 estimated £16,202 for a pair of house rabbits over ten years, including £702 for setup. It listed annual costs of £1,047 for one rabbit and £1,550 for a pair, and excluded treatment for illness, injury, or disease and behavioural therapy. Because it is a dated estimate with different assumptions, it should not be treated as a current budget or directly combined with RWAF’s 2026 figures. RSPCA rabbit costs factsheet (2012)
Plan for setup, recurring care, and surprises
- Setup: A suitable secure living area and equipment cost money before the rabbit comes home. RWAF’s example allows £500 to £3,000 for an enclosure; the amount depends on the setup and is part of its UK estimate.
- Recurring supplies: Budget for hay, appropriate food, bedding where used, fresh vegetables, and other routine needs. Hay is a daily essential, not an occasional treat.
- Health care: Leave room in the budget for routine veterinary care and unexpected illness or injury. A routine-cost estimate that excludes unexpected treatment is not the full financial risk.
- Companionship: Rabbits are social and usually need a compatible rabbit companion, so consider the care and costs of a pair rather than assuming one rabbit is the cheaper welfare-friendly option.
Why companionship, space, and diet are not optional extras
Company
Rabbits are highly social. The RSPCA says they should not live alone unless a vet advises otherwise; a compatible companion and careful bonding are part of planning for their welfare. RSPCA guidance on rabbit companionship The PDSA reported that 42% of pet rabbits in the UK lived alone in 2024, as cited by the RSPCA. That statistic describes a welfare gap; it is not a reason to assume solitary housing is suitable.

Room to move and a safe environment
Rabbits need a secure environment with room to move and opportunities for normal behaviour. RWAF’s May 2026 article recommends an enclosure measuring 3m x 2m x 1m high, available 24/7; treat that as RWAF’s stated recommendation, not a universal measurement independently established here. RWAF’s 2026 housing and cost guidance
A shop cage or hutch on its own should not be mistaken for a complete living environment. If rabbits live indoors, the area needs rabbit-proofing, including protection from electric wires and toxic materials. A secure exercise pen or enclosure panels can be one part of a setup, but suitability depends on the whole environment and current welfare guidance.

Food and water
Hay and grass should be available at all times and make up about 85% of a rabbit’s diet, according to the RSPCA. The rest includes leafy greens and a measured portion of suitable pellets, alongside fresh, clean water. The RSPCA describes good-quality hay as high-fibre, sweet-smelling, and dust-free. How much does it cost to adopt a rabbit from the RSPCA?
There is no single RSPCA adoption fee: fees vary between centres. The RSPCA says fees may contribute to microchipping, vaccination where available, neutering where appropriate, care, and veterinary checks. Ask the local centre what the fee covers and whether a rabbit must be adopted with a bonded companion. RSPCA rabbit adoption guidance
Adoption does not remove the ongoing cost of housing, food, companionship, and veterinary care. The RSPCA asks applicants to consider their available space, lifestyle, children, and other pets. Applicants should be adults, have landlord permission where relevant, and be ready to provide daily care, enrichment, and exercise. Some rabbits are already bonded and need to be rehomed together.
Is your household ready?
Before adopting or buying, adults should be able to answer yes to the following:
- Can an adult take primary responsibility for care and costs for the rabbit’s whole life?
- Can the household provide a safe, suitable environment with room to move and opportunities for normal behaviour?
- Can it support a compatible companion unless a vet advises that the rabbit should live alone?
- Can the adults reliably provide daily food, water, cleaning, and interaction, even when children are busy?
- Is there a plan and budget for routine and unexpected veterinary care?
- Can children interact gently under supervision, without treating the rabbit as a toy or expecting it to enjoy being picked up?
If any answer is no, waiting is kinder than bringing home a rabbit before the household is ready.
