The clearest way to show your cat affection is to make care feel safe and predictable: let them choose contact, offer play and places to retreat, and notice what they enjoy. Cats differ, so a cat’s willingness to approach—not a wish to cuddle—is the best guide to whether they want attention.
1. Let your cat choose contact
Approach calmly and offer a still hand for your cat to investigate. If they come forward, try a gentle touch and watch their response; if they do not approach, give them space. 2. Find the petting style your cat prefers
Many cats enjoy or tolerate touch around the cheeks, chin, head, or upper back, but preferences vary. Notice where your cat seeks contact and keep petting brief enough that they remain relaxed. Don’t wake them, corner them, restrain them, or reach into a hiding place to pet them. If you’re unsure whether they’re comfortable, pause and let them decide whether to return.
3. Play with a toy that keeps hands out of the game
A wand or fishing-rod toy lets your cat stalk, chase, pounce, and catch while keeping your hands at a safe distance. Move it like prey, and give your cat chances to catch it rather than ending every chase with a vanishing toy. Put string or other toys that could tangle or be swallowed away after play. 4. Make meals more engaging with foraging
A food puzzle or simple homemade foraging activity can give your cat a chance to search and work for part of a meal. A purchased feeder is optional; Cats Protection describes food-puzzle ideas that can be made at home. Keep your cat’s usual diet and any veterinary feeding advice in mind when changing how food is offered.
5. Provide a safe place to retreat
A quiet hiding place can help a cat feel secure. Depending on the cat, that might be a cardboard box, covered bed, or another sheltered spot. Let your cat use it undisturbed—don’t pull them out or treat the hiding place as an invitation to make contact. 6. Offer a comfortable elevated resting spot
Some cats feel safer when they can rest up high and watch their surroundings. Choose a perch your cat can reach comfortably, taking age and mobility into account, and make sure furniture or shelves are stable and secure.
7. Match the scratching surface to your cat
Scratching is normal cat behavior. A cat that stretches upward may prefer a stable vertical post; one that scratches carpets or floors may use a horizontal pad. Put the surface near a place your cat already scratches, then adjust its position or orientation based on whether they use it. Cats Protection offers advice on scratching and choosing a post or pad.

8. Keep interaction calm and predictable
Offer regular, low-pressure chances to spend time together instead of suddenly grabbing or overwhelming your cat. If they’re shy, sit quietly nearby and let them decide whether to approach. The Cats Protection advice on meeting new people also recommends gradual, cat-led trust building. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association and International Society of Feline Medicine say, “It is important to remember that every cat interacts differently and to respect the cat’s individual preferences,” in Your Cat’s Environmental Needs: Practical Tips for Cat Caregivers (2026).
9. Respect scent and familiar surroundings
Cats rely strongly on scent, so unnecessary changes to places where your cat rubs their face or body may be unsettling. Be mindful of strong or unfamiliar smells. In a multi-cat home, make sure key resources are separate and accessible rather than forcing cats to compete for them. These considerations are part of the five-pillar environmental-needs framework in the Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 Indoor Cats Position Statement: safe places; multiple, separated resources; opportunities for play and predatory behavior; positive, predictable human–cat interaction; and respect for the cat’s senses.

10. Take behavior changes seriously
A sudden increase in hiding, reduced play, or a change in social behavior can reflect stress, illness, or pain. If a change is new or persistent, or appears alongside other concerning signs, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming it is only a behavior issue.
