Rabies in cats is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system. It is usually transmitted when saliva from an infected animal enters through a bite. Once signs appear, rabies is nearly always fatal, and there is no treatment. If your cat may have been exposed or has unexplained neurologic signs, contact a veterinarian and local public health or animal-control authorities promptly.
How do cats get rabies?
Rabies virus can travel through nerves toward the spinal cord and brain. The usual route of infection is a bite from an infected animal, which introduces virus-containing saliva into tissue. Less commonly, saliva can enter through an open wound or contact the eyes, nose, or mouth. All mammals can catch and spread rabies.

An indoor-only cat is not completely protected: a bat that enters the home can create an exposure risk. Keeping cats indoors, limiting roaming, and bat-proofing the home can reduce opportunities for contact with wildlife, but vaccination remains a key preventive measure.

Signs can take weeks to months to develop. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) states that “Signs of rabies typically take weeks to months to develop” in its 2023 brochure. There is no single sign that proves a cat has rabies, and symptoms can vary.

Neurologic signs
Staggering, tremors, paralysis, increased sensitivity to noise or light, seizures, and self-mutilation are among the signs the AVMA lists. Unexplained paralysis or other neurologic changes warrant prompt professional attention; they do not, by themselves, confirm rabies.

The AVMA says rabies in an animal can be confirmed only after death, by examining brain tissue. Symptoms cannot reliably confirm or rule out rabies at home, and a living-cat test should not be treated as definitive confirmation.

There is no treatment once clinical signs appear. The AVMA states that rabies is nearly always fatal after signs begin; death usually occurs 4–8 days after signs are first noticed. That is a general animal timeline, not a prediction for an individual cat.
What should you do after a possible exposure?
If your cat may have encountered a bat or another potentially rabid animal, or has compatible neurologic signs, call your veterinarian and local public health or animal-control authorities promptly. Do not handle a suspected rabid animal casually. Follow professional instructions about keeping the cat contained, arranging an examination, and responding to possible exposure. Rules depend on location and circumstances.

If a cat has bitten someone, contact local public health authorities and follow their current directions. A 2008 CDC compendium describes confining and observing a healthy dog, cat, or ferret for 10 days, with no rabies vaccination during that observation period; it says to report illness during confinement immediately to the local health department. This is historical federal guidance, not a substitute for current local rules.
For cats exposed to a rabid animal, a 2003 CDC compendium said currently vaccinated cats should be revaccinated immediately and observed for 45 days. Because that guidance is also historical and management can depend on vaccination status and local rules, ask a veterinarian and local authorities what applies now.

How can you prevent rabies in cats?
- Keep vaccinations current. Have a veterinarian vaccinate your cat and help you follow the plan required by state and local laws.
- Reduce wildlife contact. Keep cats indoors or limit outdoor roaming, and reduce the chance that bats can enter the home.
- Act promptly after a suspected encounter. Contact a veterinarian and local authorities rather than waiting for symptoms, which can take weeks to months to appear.
The AVMA’s 2023 brochure reports hundreds of rabies cases in cats each year in the United States, but it does not specify the surveillance year for that statement; it should not be read as a precise count for 2023.
