Avoid rubbing the mess into the fibers, mixing cleaners, or letting your cat walk on wet product or residue.
1. Move your cat away and check for warning signs
Keep your cat out of the cleanup area while the carpet is wet or being treated. Before focusing on the stain, consider whether the vomiting could signal an urgent health problem. VCA Animal Hospitals advises prompt veterinary care if vomiting is accompanied by blood, lethargy, appetite loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or dehydration, or if you suspect your cat swallowed a toxin or foreign object. It also recommends veterinary care when an otherwise well cat continues vomiting for more than one to two days. 2. Lift the solid material
Put on gloves if you prefer. Use paper towels or a dull tool to lift solid material gently, working from the outside toward the center so you do not spread it. Avoid pressing down or scraping hard; the aim is to remove the material without forcing it deeper into the carpet. Put the waste in a bag and discard it.

3. Blot the liquid
With a clean cloth or paper towels, press down to absorb the liquid, then lift and use a clean section. Repeat as needed. Do not rub or scrub: friction can spread the spot and push mess into the fibers. BISSELL’s carpet cleanup guidance likewise recommends lifting and blotting rather than rubbing.

4. Apply a cleaner labeled for your carpet
Check both the carpet’s care instructions and the cleaner’s label. Use a product specifically labeled for your carpet type and the mess, and test it on an inconspicuous area first. Do not assume a cleaner intended for carpet is suitable for wool, delicate rugs, upholstery, leather, or another material. Never mix cleaning products.
Follow the product’s directions
Apply only as directed, including any instructions about how much to use, how long to leave it, whether to rinse or extract it, and ventilation. For example, Nature’s Miracle says its cat stain and odor remover is intended for vomit and other organic messes, and directs users to let it work for 15 minutes before blotting. 5. Remove excess moisture and let the carpet dry
Rinse or extract only if the carpet-care instructions and cleaner label call for it. Blot or extract remaining moisture as directed, then allow the area to dry thoroughly before your cat returns. VCA warns that household cleaners, including carpet cleaners, can be hazardous to cats; wipe away excess cleaner or residue as appropriate, store products out of reach, and keep your cat away from the treated area until it is completely dry. When to use a carpet-cleaning machine
A spot treatment is generally the simpler approach for a small, fresh mess. For a larger or repeated carpet mess, a carpet and upholstery cleaner is an optional tool, not a requirement. BISSELL describes using a machine with a compatible formula; check the machine and formula instructions for your carpet, application, and drying requirements. Keep your cat away until the treated area is dry, just as you would after hand-cleaning.
