Yes—backyard chickens can make people sick, even when the birds look healthy and clean. Germs can spread from poultry and from contaminated coops, equipment, shoes, and other places birds live or roam. Flocks also face disease risks, including avian influenza brought in by wild birds. Handwashing, careful egg handling, cleanable equipment, and prompt action when birds become ill can reduce risks, but no single measure guarantees protection.
What health risks do backyard chickens pose to people?
CDC lists Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli, histoplasmosis, and bird flu among diseases associated with backyard poultry. This does not mean every flock carries each germ. People may be exposed by touching birds or contaminated surfaces and then touching food or their mouths without washing their hands.

Salmonella and other germs
Chickens can carry Salmonella while appearing healthy and clean. Germs may be present on birds or in places where they live and roam, including coop surfaces and equipment. CDC describes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps as common Salmonella symptoms. Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria; most people recover without treatment in 4 to 7 days. Children younger than five, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe illness that may require medical care or hospitalization. These are general CDC descriptions, not a diagnosis or prediction for an individual.

Wild birds can expose backyard flocks to avian influenza viruses. People exposed to sick, infected birds have increased risk of infection. Human illness is uncommon, but it can be severe: a CDC report published May 7, 2026 documented a fatal H5N5 case in a Washington backyard flock owner after an illness in November 2025. That single case does not establish the likelihood of illness for other flock owners.

How can you reduce risks to your household?
Make handwashing and separation routine
- Wash hands with soap and water immediately after touching poultry, eggs, or anything in the birds’ living or roaming areas.
- Keep birds and poultry supplies—including feed containers and coop shoes—outside the home. Use footwear dedicated to the coop rather than wearing it indoors.
- Do not kiss or snuggle poultry, or eat and drink around them. Supervise children around birds.
- Children younger than five should not handle poultry or spend time in areas where poultry live and roam. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face greater risk of severe illness from poultry-associated germs.
Handle eggs safely
- Collect eggs often and discard cracked ones.
- If an egg is dirty, clean it carefully with fine sandpaper, a brush, or a cloth rather than washing it in cold water.
- Refrigerate eggs. Cook them until both yolks and whites are firm; egg dishes should reach an internal temperature of 160°F.
How can you protect the flock from disease?
Flock illness can spread through infected birds and through contaminated equipment, clothing, vehicles, feed, or water. USDA-APHIS says biosecurity helps reduce these risks, but it cannot guarantee a disease-free flock.
Reduce contact and contamination
- Keep the outdoor enclosure safe and sturdy, and use feeders and waterers that can be cleaned and disinfected.
- Limit visitors and keep wild birds away from poultry food and water where possible.
- Wash hands before and after poultry contact. Use footwear controls and change clothes around poultry areas; keep coop clothing and shoes separate from household items.
- Remove visible manure, feathers, mud, and other debris from tools and equipment before disinfecting them or using a footbath. Organic matter can interfere with disinfectants. Follow the product label for dilution and contact time, and keep footbaths clean.
- Clean and disinfect tools and equipment before moving them between poultry areas or facilities. Disposable boot covers may be useful for flock contact, but they do not replace handwashing or other biosecurity steps.
Quarantine new birds
Keep new poultry separate from the existing flock for at least 30 days before introducing them. Care for the established flock before tending new birds, and ask a poultry-experienced veterinarian or extension agent for advice on your setup.

What signs of illness should you watch for?
CDC identifies these signs in sick poultry:
- Eating or drinking less than usual, or ruffled feathers
- Runny diarrhea
- Discharge from the eyes or nose, or difficulty breathing
- Fewer eggs, or eggs that are discolored, irregular, or misshapen
- Unexpected death
These signs do not diagnose avian influenza by themselves. Contact a poultry-experienced veterinarian or local extension agent to help determine the cause. For sudden deaths, unusual illness, or suspected bird flu, contact local animal-health authorities promptly and follow their instructions. USDA-APHIS advises reporting sick or dying birds to a state veterinarian or USDA; its Defend the Flock page lists 1-866-536-7593. Reporting steps can vary by location.

What do backyard-flock survey figures tell us?
A CDC online survey of 638 backyard-flock owners, conducted July 23–December 3, 2025, included respondents from 48 U.S. states. It was a respondent survey, not a representative estimate of all U.S. flock owners. Among those respondents:
