Whether you can take a dog to a temple depends on that temple’s current visitor rules. Devdutt Pattanaik’s account of dogs in Hindu mythology describes them as sacred or significant in some stories and marginal or inauspicious in others, but mythology does not establish a modern temple’s pet-entry policy. Contact the temple authority before visiting with your dog.
Does Hindu mythology mean dogs are allowed in temples?
No. A dog’s place in a myth or religious image is not the same as permission to bring a pet into a temple. Policies are temple-specific, and the sources discussed here do not establish a general rule for temples in India or elsewhere.

Pattanaik’s essay recounts a reported 2022 incident at Kedarnath, but that incident cannot establish the temple’s current policy, much less a rule that applies to other temples. The official Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee website describes pilgrimage formalities that may change; the page reviewed does not state a dog-entry policy. Ask the authority responsible for the particular temple for its current rule before setting out.
How dogs appear in Devdutt Pattanaik’s account
In his essay “The Dogs of Bhairava,” published by Scroll.in on May 22, 2022, Pattanaik presents dogs as having varied, sometimes contradictory associations. They may appear as guardians or companions, but can also be linked with death, impurity, attachment, or social marginality. He connects some of this symbolism to a dog’s devotion to its human master, while cautioning that the idea of dogs as impure is a broad generalization—not a universal belief.

Bhairava and Dattatreya
Pattanaik associates dogs with Bhairava, an aggressive form of Shiva, and describes depictions of Kal or Batuk Bhairava with a dog. His summary is: “Dogs, in general, are associated with the aggressive form of Shiva known as Bhairava.” The essay also mentions Delhi’s Kilkari Bhairava temple, whose complex is described as full of dogs; that detail does not establish a visitor rule for pets.
In Pattanaik’s account, Dattatreya is accompanied by four dogs, often interpreted as embodiments of the four Vedas. These associations give dogs a place in religious stories and imagery, but do not say whether a particular temple will admit a visitor’s dog.

Sarama and other stories
The essay describes Sarama as Indra’s female dog and recounts stories involving her and her children in the Rig Veda and the Mahabharata. It also recounts several regional and devotional traditions:
- Korku origin story: Pattanaik relates a Korku legend in which Shiva creates dogs to protect two human figures from Indra’s horses. He says that, in this account, the Korku worship Shiva, Ravana, and the dog.
- Hadkai Mata: He describes a community denied entry to temples making painted cloth images of its own gods and worshipping Hadkai Mata, portrayed riding a dog and protecting people from measles.
- Khandoba: In the story Pattanaik recounts, Khandoba’s dog swallows the demon Mani’s blood so that each drop cannot produce another demon.
These are stories and interpretations as presented in Pattanaik’s essay, not evidence of a single belief held by every community or a contemporary rule about temple visitors.

How to check a temple’s dog-entry rule
- Identify the specific temple. Do not assume that a rule at one site applies to another, including temples dedicated to the same deity.
- Contact its authority before travelling. Ask whether pet dogs may enter the temple grounds and any indoor or restricted areas, and whether there are conditions for entry. Seek confirmation from the temple or its responsible committee rather than relying on a mythological association or an old report.
- Follow the current instructions on arrival. If the rule is unclear or staff give different guidance, ask the responsible authority before entering with your dog.
