The animals are an orca ecotype—not a separate species—and the estimate that fewer than 100 remain around the Antarctic Peninsula comes from a researcher quoted in 2025, not a verified census or an official extinction-risk listing.
What the footage shows
Discover Wildlife reported that Dr Leigh Hickmott, a researcher with Open Ocean Consulting, filmed the encounter in Marguerite Bay. The footage is associated with the BBC documentary Expedition Killer Whale. It reportedly shows the pod travelling through a narrow channel in pack ice before searching an inlet for seals.
Hickmott’s account, as reported by Discover Wildlife, describes pack-ice killer whales spy-hopping to look across floes for seals resting on the ice. The whales may then work together to create waves that wash a seal into the water, where they can catch it. These details are attributed to Hickmott’s account; the report does not establish that every sequence in the footage shows a successful hunt.
What “B1 pack-ice killer whale” means
B1 refers to an Antarctic killer whale ecotype: a population group distinguished by characteristics such as size, diet and vocal behaviour. Discover Wildlife describes three ecotypes around the Antarctic Peninsula—A, B1 and B2. Calling B1 a “rare species” is therefore imprecise: the footage concerns killer whales (orcas), with B1 identifying an ecotype rather than a separate species.

How strong is the claim that fewer than 100 remain?
Discover Wildlife quoted Hickmott as saying: “That population around the Antarctic Peninsula is small, less than 100 individuals and declining.” This is a researcher-attributed estimate reported in 2025. The report does not give a survey method or an uncertainty range, so the figure should not be treated as a formal census.
The headline’s phrase “on the brink of extinction” is publisher framing, not a confirmed formal conservation category. The sources cited in the report do not establish an authoritative threat listing for the B1 ecotype. They also do not provide a quantified assessment showing how climate change affects this particular population. Broader concerns about Antarctic ecosystems do not by themselves establish a specific cause or extinction risk for B1 killer whales.

What the footage does—and does not—establish
- It identifies a reported encounter: Discover Wildlife attributes the filming in Marguerite Bay to Hickmott and connects the footage with Expedition Killer Whale.
- It offers a glimpse of hunting behaviour: the reported account describes searching ice floes for seals and coordinated waves that can dislodge prey.
- It does not settle population status: the under-100 figure is an attributed estimate, and the report does not supply a formal census or an official conservation category for B1.
Discover Wildlife’s report is dated April 22, 2025; Indian Defence Review published the headline story on April 23, 2025. Current streaming availability for Expedition Killer Whale has not been established.
