You can’t responsibly make a nutritionally complete raw diet for a cat from a generic 10-step recipe. The right ingredients and amounts depend on the formula, and the cited veterinary guidance recommends qualified expertise for homemade diets. Raw food also carries pathogen risks for cats and people. Before making homemade food your cat’s main diet, talk with your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist.
Why isn’t there a safe, universal raw cat food recipe?
A cat’s main diet needs to be nutritionally complete and balanced. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that a pet-food “complete and balanced” adequacy statement is tied to meeting AAFCO nutrient profiles or being substantiated through feeding trials. That standard is not established just by choosing plausible ingredients or following a recipe: FDA: “Complete and Balanced” Pet Food.

Homemade diets can be nutritionally unbalanced or difficult to prepare consistently. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) advises having a qualified nutrition professional evaluate or formulate them. Without a professionally formulated recipe for your individual cat, supplying ingredient ratios, feeding amounts, or supplement doses would be guesswork.

How do the main feeding options differ?

These are different ways to assess a diet, not a claim that every commercial product is complete or that every homemade formula is adequate. Read labels and have a professional assess any recipe intended as your cat’s main food.
What are the risks of feeding raw?
Raw animal protein can carry disease-causing germs that may affect pets and the people who handle the food. CDC’s guidance is direct: “CDC does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats.” It also says freezing, freeze-drying, or dehydrating raw animal protein reduces germs but does not kill all of them: CDC: About Pet Food Safety.

FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine describes a study conducted from October 2010 through July 2012. It screened more than 1,000 pet-food samples overall; in the second year, it included 196 commercially available raw dog and cat food samples. FDA reported that raw food was more likely to be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria than other types tested. It also advises considering whether the pet is young, immunocompromised, or has other health conditions. What should you do before changing your cat’s main diet?
- Talk with your veterinarian first. Explain that you are considering a homemade raw diet and ask whether your cat’s health makes a diet change unsuitable.
- Ask for qualified formulation help. CDC recommends consulting a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist when homemade food is the main diet. WSAVA nutritional assessment guidance recommends a board-certified veterinary nutritionist or equivalent for evaluating or formulating homemade diets: WSAVA Nutritional Assessment Guidelines.
- Get a complete, individualized recipe—not a list of ingredients. Ask the professional to specify the full formula and preparation instructions, and how it is intended to meet your cat’s needs. Do not fill gaps with guessed quantities or supplements.
- Check whether the diet is intended to be the sole food. For a commercial food, look for a complete-and-balanced adequacy statement relevant to your cat; for homemade food, have the professional assess the whole recipe.
- Weigh the raw-food risks for everyone in the household. CDC does not recommend raw pet food. Discuss safer feeding choices with your veterinarian, particularly if anyone in the household is in a higher-risk group.

If raw food is handled, how can exposure be reduced?
These precautions reduce handling and storage risks; they do not make raw food pathogen-free.

- Keep raw meat and poultry frozen until needed. Thaw it in a refrigerator or microwave, not on a counter or in a sink.
- Keep raw food separate from other food and clean surfaces that may have been contaminated.
- Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling raw food or contaminated surfaces.
- Promptly cover and refrigerate uneaten food, or discard it safely.
Those are FDA’s handling recommendations, alongside CDC’s warning that freezing and similar processing do not kill all germs. A suitable leak-resistant container can help contain food during storage, but it does not eliminate pathogens.

No. FDA has issued a product-specific advisory about certain lots of Quest cat food because of extremely low thiamine (vitamin B1) levels. That incident is a reminder to heed recalls and advisories for the particular food you buy; it does not establish a problem with commercial cat food generally: FDA advisory on certain cat food lots.
