In reef-keeping, a “tank crash” is informal shorthand for a serious event or chain of events that causes widespread livestock loss or leaves the keeper considering a restart. It is not a formal diagnosis, and there is no universally accepted point at which every aquarium must be rebooted.
Start by treating the situation as an investigation: verify alarming readings, inspect every life-support component, document what changed and when, and avoid several drastic corrections at once. A recoverable malfunction, a cascading system problem and a full restart are different decisions.

What reef keepers mean by “tank crash”
The phrase appears in hobby forums and reef publications rather than in a standardized veterinary or scientific classification. One Reef2Reef participant described a crash as “Basically an event or string of events that force you to reboot and start again.” That wording captures the practical meaning: the system has become so unstable, or losses are so broad, that ordinary troubleshooting no longer feels sufficient.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A failed return pump may be a short-lived equipment malfunction if it is found quickly. A dosing error followed by a heater failure can become a cascading problem affecting chemistry, temperature and oxygenation. In another case, a keeper may have lost most livestock and be deciding whether to dismantle the aquarium and rebuild. Calling all three situations a crash can obscure the next decision, so classify what you are seeing before you act.

There is no evidence-based universal threshold such as a particular percentage of dead animals, a specific test result or a fixed number of hours that mandates a reboot. The available discussions are hobbyist reports, not controlled studies or emergency-care protocols. Your decision therefore has to account for the suspected cause, what remains alive, whether the cause can be removed, and whether competent help is available.
Three useful buckets for deciding what happens next
These are practical editorial categories, not validated clinical diagnoses. An aquarium can move from one bucket to another as new information appears.
1. A contained malfunction
Something stopped or changed, but the cause is identifiable and correctable: a pump is not running, a heater controller is reporting a fault, or a dosing device delivered an unexpected amount. If reliable readings and observation show that conditions are no longer deteriorating, targeted repair and careful monitoring may be more appropriate than tearing down the whole system.

2. A cascading system problem
Several factors interact and the original trigger is uncertain. For example, a circulation failure can be followed by temperature instability, while an incorrect test result prompts a large chemical adjustment. In this bucket, the priority is to stop adding new variables, verify the basic measurements and find the sequence of events before choosing a major intervention.
3. A restart decision
A reboot is the keeper’s term for rebuilding or restarting a system after substantial losses or persistent instability. It may involve replacing or cleaning components, changing the biological foundation or starting the setup again, but hobby sources do not establish a single safe restart procedure. Treat a reboot as a considered project, not an automatic response to one bad reading.

First response when animals are declining
The source material does not provide a validated emergency-treatment protocol for marine animals. If losses are active, contact an experienced aquatic veterinarian or a qualified marine-aquarium professional rather than improvising medication or a complete reset from an anecdote. While arranging help, limit actions to information gathering and preventing additional unverified changes.
- Pause nonessential interventions. Do not stack a water change, chemical correction, new medication and equipment changes without knowing what each is intended to fix. Multiple simultaneous actions make it impossible to identify the cause and can create a second shock.
- Confirm the alarming result. Check the test kit’s expiration and instructions, repeat the test, and, where practical, compare it with a second reliable method. For salinity, follow the manufacturer’s calibration procedure for your refractometer and cross-check the result rather than acting on a single unexplained number. The goal is to prevent a mistaken reading from driving an excessive correction.
- Inspect life-support equipment. Check power supplies, return and circulation pumps, heaters, controllers, dosing pumps, lighting fixtures and alarms. Look for a silent pump, an empty or unexpectedly depleted dosing reservoir, a heater that is stuck or off, or a recently changed fixture configuration. Record what you find before resetting devices.
- Write a timeline. Note the last time the aquarium looked normal, livestock behavior, water additions, salt mix, maintenance, new animals, dosing changes, power interruptions and each equipment fault. A timeline can distinguish a single failure from a chain reaction and gives a veterinarian or professional something concrete to evaluate.
- Protect surviving animals only with informed guidance. Moving livestock, changing the substrate or beginning medication can help in some circumstances and harm in others. Ask an aquatic professional what isolation or treatment is appropriate for the species and the suspected problem instead of applying a generic internet recipe.
How measurement and dosing mistakes become a crash
Measurements are decisions, not just numbers. A Reef2Reef discussion includes an anecdote in which a refractometer was believed to be uncalibrated; the keeper then made a large salinity correction that overshot. This illustrates a failure mode, not a proven explanation for crashes in general. Before correcting a result that conflicts with animal behavior or a previous trend, verify the instrument and repeat the test.

The same principle applies to dosing. Confirm the concentration, units, pump programming, reservoir level and delivery rate. Check whether a dosing line is siphoning or whether a pump has run longer than intended. Do not infer the cause from a single chemistry value, and do not make a second large adjustment simply because the first one has not produced an immediate visible response.
Useful generic tools include an aquarium refractometer, appropriate test kits, a trustworthy thermometer, and heater or pump alarms. These categories can improve observation, but no tool prevents a crash by itself. A reading is only as useful as the instrument’s calibration, the sampling method and the keeper’s interpretation.

- Maintenance and stocking pressure: Participants have cited neglected upkeep, poor-quality saltwater and stocking levels that exceed what the filtration system can support.
- Measurement error: An incorrect salinity or other test result can prompt a correction that creates a larger swing.
- Risky interventions: A treatment or hardware change aimed at one problem can introduce another if compatibility and side effects are not understood.
One Reef2Reef account describes a return pump stopping, a dosing pump releasing excess material and a heater later failing. The sequence shows how independent faults can compound; it does not establish that those failures commonly occur together or that any one caused the reported losses.

A ReefBum first-person article recounts removing a glass shield from a lighting fixture and associates subsequent livestock deaths with the loss of UV protection. The same account describes unsuccessful attempts to address dinoflagellates before more losses occurred. Use this as a caution to verify fixture compatibility and research an intervention’s risks, not as a general finding about a particular light or about dinoflagellates.
Recovery versus reboot: a decision framework
Neither option is automatically safer. Compare the situation against the questions below, and document the reasoning you use.
| Question | Favors targeted recovery | Raises the case for considering a reboot |
|---|---|---|
| Can you identify and remove the trigger? | A failed or misconfigured component is confirmed and can be repaired or replaced. | The trigger remains unknown, recurring or embedded in equipment or materials. |
| What livestock remains? | Survivors are stable enough to monitor and there is professional guidance for their care. | Losses are widespread and continued exposure may endanger the few survivors. |
| Are measurements trustworthy? | Repeated, cross-checked readings give a coherent picture. | Instruments, sampling or test methods cannot be trusted yet. |
| Could hardware or substrate be contributing? | Inspection finds no continuing contamination or malfunction. | A component, reservoir, plumbing section or substrate may still be involved and cannot be safely evaluated in place. |
| What is the risk of another disturbance? | Small, isolated corrections can be made and observed one at a time. | Further operation appears to expose survivors to an unresolved hazard. |
| Do you have help? | An experienced professional can review the timeline and readings. | No qualified help is available, so a major reset would be speculative; that is a reason to seek help, not proof that a reboot is correct. |
Time, labor and cost also matter. Rebuilding can require new saltwater, replacement equipment, biological media and a period of observation before animals can safely return. Recovery can take longer when the cause is uncertain, but a hurried reboot can discard useful biological stability and repeat the original mistake if the trigger was never identified.
What a reboot does—and does not—mean
Keepers use “reboot” loosely. For one person it means correcting equipment and allowing the existing system to stabilize; for another it means removing livestock, replacing water and substrate, cleaning or replacing hardware and beginning biological maturation again. Because the reviewed sources do not define a standard restart protocol, do not treat any forum checklist as universally safe.

Before dismantling anything, answer these planning questions:
- What evidence shows that the present system, rather than a single replaceable component, is the continuing hazard?
- How will surviving animals be housed and monitored while work is done?
- Which materials, reservoirs, plumbing parts or tools might carry the suspected problem?
- What will you test, and how will you know the replacement measurements are reliable?
- What professional advice is available for species-specific triage and for deciding when a rebuilt system is ready?
If you cannot answer these questions, pause the teardown and obtain qualified advice. A reset that changes every variable at once may make the aquarium look new without making it safer.

Correcting an unverified number
A single implausible result should trigger a repeat test and instrument check, not an aggressive adjustment. Keep a written record of the original value, the method and the correction so a professional can assess what happened.
Changing several systems simultaneously
Replacing saltwater, altering lighting, adding chemicals and swapping filtration in one session removes the ability to learn which action helped or harmed. Make only the changes that an informed plan requires, then observe before adding another variable.

Assuming a popular remedy is a diagnosis
Algae, dinoflagellates, cloudy water or animal inactivity can have multiple causes. A treatment aimed at a symptom may not address the trigger and can add stress. Ask what evidence supports the diagnosis and what the intervention could change.
Building a prevention and readiness routine
Prevention cannot eliminate every failure, but it can make a developing problem easier to detect and investigate.
- Keep a dated log of water tests, dosing, maintenance, livestock additions and equipment changes.
- Calibrate and maintain measurement tools according to their manufacturers’ instructions; replace expired or suspect reagents.
- Use alarms or controllers for critical pumps and heaters when appropriate, and test that alerts actually reach you.
- Inspect pump intakes, tubing, heaters, power connections and dosing lines on a schedule rather than only after a problem.
- Record normal readings and animal behavior so an abnormal result has context.
- Research compatibility before modifying a light, cover, shield, controller or plumbing component.
- Keep contact information for an aquatic veterinarian or experienced marine-aquarium professional before an emergency occurs.
- Have a written plan for documenting a failure and for obtaining suitable temporary housing, but do not pre-commit to a universal reboot recipe.
When to stop troubleshooting alone
Seek expert help when deaths are continuing, multiple life-support systems have failed, readings conflict despite repeated testing, or you are considering medication, mass relocation or a complete teardown. An aquatic veterinarian can address animal illness and welfare; a qualified marine-aquarium professional can help inspect system design and equipment. The hobbyist accounts discussed here cannot substitute for that assessment.
The most defensible response to a suspected crash is deliberate rather than dramatic: establish what changed, verify what you can measure, remove confirmed hazards, and choose recovery or rebuilding only after considering surviving livestock and the risks of further disturbance. “Reboot” is an option, not a diagnosis.
