If you cannot keep your pet, start by asking whether practical support could make it possible to keep them. If it cannot, a careful rehoming process can help you find a better-fitting home: describe the pet honestly, speak with prospective adopters before arranging a meeting, and transfer the animal’s records and care information. If you found the animal rather than owning it, contact local animal services or a shelter first; local rules may require reporting or a holding period.
First, decide whether rehoming is necessary
Financial strain, a temporary emergency, health problems, difficulty accessing veterinary care, or housing restrictions can make pet care difficult. Before making a permanent decision, contact a local shelter or rescue and ask what support is available. Depending on the organization, options may include pet food or supplies, lower-cost veterinary care, behavior resources, temporary fostering, or help with housing-related barriers. Support is not available everywhere, and it may not resolve every situation. If you cannot provide appropriate care, rehoming may still be the right choice.

A local shelter or rescue can also help you understand placement options. You might arrange a direct adoption yourself, seek help from an animal organization, or ask about a shelter placement. The right route depends on local requirements, the help you need, and the pet’s health, behavior, and fit with a prospective household. No one route is best for every animal.

A useful profile helps prospective adopters judge whether they can meet the animal’s needs. Include the pet’s name, age, size, appearance, and spay or neuter status, along with available health and vaccination information. Describe personality, routines, food preferences, likes and dislikes, and how the pet responds to children, other animals, visitors, or being alone. Be candid about medical needs, behavior concerns, and any situations the pet finds difficult. Omitting a limitation can lead to a poor match.

Talk with prospective adopters before a meeting
Arrange a phone conversation before introducing the pet. You can open naturally: “Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about yourself and your home?” Ask about the person’s experience with pets, household members, current animals, living arrangements, expectations, and the kind of animal they hope to adopt. The aim is to understand whether this home may suit this pet—not to expect a prospective adopter to have an ideal history.

Explain the pet’s care needs and limitations plainly, and invite questions. A conversation can reveal important compatibility issues, but it cannot guarantee how an animal will behave after a move. If the adopter has resident pets, discuss whether an introduction would be appropriate and how to arrange it thoughtfully.
Arrange a thoughtful introduction
Choose a setting suited to the animals and the people involved. If the prospective adopter has other pets, a meet-and-greet can help you observe how they respond to one another. Pay attention to both animal behavior and the adopter’s approach; do not force an interaction if either animal appears uncomfortable. An introduction offers useful information, not a promise that the animals will settle together. Take time to consider what you observed before agreeing to the placement.

Complete the handoff carefully
A written adoption agreement can record the transfer and the parties’ understanding. Give the adopter the veterinary and vaccination records you have, a clear account of the pet’s care and routines, and familiar food and belongings such as bedding, bowls, or toys. Pass along any relevant details about medication, feeding, or behavior so the new caregiver can maintain continuity.
Update identification and ownership records as applicable. This may include microchip registration, collar identification, licenses, and other records. The exact steps depend on your location and the animal’s existing registrations; check with the relevant registry or local authority where needed.

If you found a dog or cat, do not treat it as an owned pet to rehome
A found animal may have an owner, and rules for reporting, holding, and disposition vary by location. Check for a collar tag, and ask a veterinarian or shelter about scanning for a microchip. Contact local animal services or a shelter promptly to learn the required process before arranging a private placement.
