A newly adopted dog may eat less when adjusting to a new home, but stress is only one possible cause. Illness, pain, medication, a food change, or trouble chewing and swallowing can also stop a dog from eating. Keep meals calm and predictable, watch for other symptoms, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog seems unwell, eating hurts, or the refusal continues. How quickly to seek care depends on the dog’s age, health, symptoms, and how long it has gone without food.
Can stress cause a dog to lose its appetite?
Yes. Moving to a new home and joining an unfamiliar household can be stressful, and that upheaval may temporarily affect appetite. But a recent adoption does not prove that stress is the cause. A dog that has stopped eating may be ill or uncomfortable and should be judged by its overall condition, not just by the timing of the adoption.
Some dogs may approach their food but struggle to pick it up, chew, or swallow. That pattern can point to discomfort rather than reluctance, so do not dismiss it as pickiness.
Why would a dog suddenly stop eating but act normal otherwise?
A dog can have a reduced appetite before other signs of illness are obvious. Possible explanations include changes in routine or food, stress from a new environment, medication effects, pain, or a health problem. Even if your dog otherwise seems normal, note when it last ate and monitor closely for changes.

What to do when your newly adopted dog won’t eat
- Make mealtimes quiet and predictable. Offer food in a calm place at consistent times, and observe whether your dog eats, how much, and whether chewing or swallowing looks uncomfortable.
- Ask about the previous routine. If possible, check with the rescue or shelter about the food and feeding schedule your dog had before adoption. Avoid repeatedly switching foods or making abrupt changes.
- Keep a short log. Record meals and approximate intake, water intake, vomiting or diarrhea, energy, and any medication changes. Note when the appetite change began; this timeline can help the veterinarian.
- Call before trying remedies. Ask a veterinarian before giving medication or appetite stimulants, or starting a home-prepared diet. Do not let attempts to tempt your dog to eat delay veterinary advice if it has other symptoms, a relevant health condition, or ongoing appetite loss.
A food bowl may help you keep meals in one place and observe what is eaten, but no bowl or other consumer product treats loss of appetite.
When should you call a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog seems painful while eating, refuses food and is vomiting or has diarrhea, or has a significant ongoing change in appetite. VCA Urgent Care advises veterinary evaluation when a pet has not eaten for more than 12 hours; it also flags a diabetic animal refusing even one meal. AKC advises calling about a significant appetite change lasting 12 to 24 hours and urges particular promptness for young puppies, diabetic dogs, and dogs with gastrointestinal signs. These are published guidance thresholds, not assurances that it is safe to wait until a particular hour. Your dog’s age, medical history, symptoms, and condition matter.

What to tell the veterinarian
- When your dog last ate and whether it has eaten anything since adoption.
- Whether it drinks water, and any vomiting, diarrhea, low energy, or apparent pain.
- Whether it seems interested in food but has trouble picking it up, chewing, or swallowing.
- What food and schedule it had before adoption, if known, and any recent food or medication changes.
- Relevant health history, including diabetes or other known conditions.
