Counting the Rhode Island Red (state bird), striped bass (state fish), American burying beetle (state insect), harbor seal (state marine mammal), quahaug (state shell), and calamari (state appetizer) creates a useful six-item guide—but the shell and appetizer are not official state-animal designations.
What the six-item list actually means
The phrase “Rhode Island’s six official state animals” combines six entries from the state’s broader symbol inventory. Four entries designate an animal in a biological category: bird, fish, insect, or marine mammal. The other two represent an animal through a shell category or a prepared-food category.

This distinction matters when you are using the list in a classroom, quiz, article, or state-symbol project. The Rhode Island Department of State’s current inventory is organized by symbol type, not by one umbrella category called “state animals.” Rhode Island General Laws directly establish the Rhode Island Red as the state bird and the American burying beetle as the state insect. The other entries are presented through the state’s symbol categories and educational materials.
The table below follows the adoption dates listed by the Department of State. “Animal itself” identifies whether the designation names the living animal directly or refers to a shell or food made from one.

Spelling varies between “quahaug” and “quahog.” The Department of State uses both forms in its materials; they refer to the same hard-shell clam.
The six symbols, one by one
Rhode Island Red: the state bird
The Rhode Island Red is a domestic chicken breed developed in Rhode Island and named for the state. Rhode Island General Laws § 42-4-5 designate the Rhode Island Red as the official state bird. That makes it a bird symbol even though it is a farm breed rather than a wild species.
RI.gov’s historical account of the state-bird bill attributes this description to Governor Dennis J. Roberts when he signed the measure: the Rhode Island Red “has become a symbol of Rhode Islanders all over the world.” In that sentence, the governor was referring specifically to the breed’s connection with the state and its people.
The Department of State also says Rhode Island Reds can lay up to 300 brown eggs a year. The page presents that as a general factoid and does not identify an underlying study or production conditions, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed output for every hen or flock.

Striped bass: the state fish
Striped bass occupies Rhode Island’s state-fish category. The Department of State lists its designation as a separate symbol from the state bird, insect, and marine mammal. That classification is why it belongs in the six-item animal-related grouping without being described as another kind of state bird or wildlife emblem.
The state’s symbol page characterizes striped bass as averaging 20 to 30 inches and notes that individuals can live 30 years or more. Those figures are supplied without a named study or a detailed population context on the page. They are best read as the state’s general description, not as a promise that every fish reaches those measurements or lifespan.
For a report or lesson, identify striped bass by its exact category—“state fish”—rather than simply calling it one of Rhode Island’s “state animals.” That wording preserves the way Rhode Island organizes its official symbols.
American burying beetle: the state insect
The American burying beetle is Rhode Island’s official state insect. Rhode Island General Laws § 42-4-20 provide the direct statutory designation, and the Department of State lists the adoption date as July 14, 2015.

Its inclusion demonstrates that the state-symbol system is broader than familiar vertebrate emblems. A beetle can be an official symbol in its own right, with no need to place it under the bird, fish, or mammal categories. When a source asks for the legally established animal designations, this insect and the Rhode Island Red are the clearest examples because both are identified in the General Laws cited above.
The name should be written in full. “American burying beetle” is the official common-name form used in the state materials; shortening it to “burying beetle” can make a school worksheet or comparison less precise.
Harbor seal: the state marine mammal
Rhode Island identifies the harbor seal as its state marine mammal. This is a distinct category from state fish: a seal is a mammal, while striped bass is a fish, even though both are associated with coastal waters.

The Department of State’s educational guide says harbor seals can grow to six feet and weigh more than 200 pounds. The guide, described as approximately a 2023 publication, does not name an underlying study, so the figures should be attributed to that guide rather than presented as a current measurement for every seal.

Using the full category—“state marine mammal”—also avoids a common ambiguity. Calling the harbor seal merely the “state animal” hides the fact that Rhode Island selected a specific marine-mammal symbol in addition to its state fish and state bird.
Quahaug (quahog): the state shell
The quahaug, also spelled quahog, appears in Rhode Island’s state-shell category. The Department of State lists the designation date as June 30, 1987. A shell is a shellfish-related symbol, but the category is not labeled “state animal.”
That technical point explains why the quahaug is included in a six-item guide yet should not be used as evidence that Rhode Island formally named six animals. In a list restricted to biological animal categories, the quahaug would be left out. In a list of animal-related state symbols, it belongs because the state selected the shell as an official emblem.

Calamari (squid): the state appetizer
Calamari is Rhode Island’s state appetizer, with the Department of State listing June 27, 2014, as the adoption date. Calamari is prepared squid, so the symbol is food rather than a designation of squid as the state animal or state fish.
This is the most important category warning in the six-item list. A menu item can be an official state symbol without creating a new biological category. Rhode Island’s inventory treats calamari as an appetizer, and the squid connection explains why it is relevant to an animal-symbol article—but it does not change the legal or administrative category.
For accuracy, write “calamari, the state appetizer” instead of “the state squid.” The latter wording assigns a designation Rhode Island’s symbol inventory does not make.

Two entries have especially direct legal references in the materials used for this list:
- Rhode Island Red: R.I. Gen. Laws § 42-4-5 identifies it as the official state bird.
- American burying beetle: R.I. Gen. Laws § 42-4-20 identifies it as the official state insect.
The Department of State’s symbol inventory supplies the category names and adoption dates for all six entries. Its educational activity guide corroborates the names and several dates, including those for the Rhode Island Red, quahog, striped bass, American burying beetle, and harbor seal. Because the guide contains minor discrepancies involving some non-animal symbols, the current Department of State inventory is the better reference for the dates in the table.
The Department of Environmental Management’s “Wild Rhode Island” material can add ecological background, but its 2018 issue should not be treated as a current legal inventory of state symbols.
How to use the list without overstating it
- State the counting rule first. Explain that you are grouping six animal-related symbols from different official categories.
- Keep the categories attached to the names. Say “state bird,” “state fish,” “state insect,” “state marine mammal,” “state shell,” and “state appetizer.”
- Separate direct animal designations from related symbols. The Rhode Island Red, striped bass, American burying beetle, and harbor seal name animals directly. The quahaug and calamari represent a shell and a prepared food.
- Use the current state inventory for dates. If a historical or educational source gives a conflicting date for a non-animal symbol, identify the source and prefer the current Department of State listing for this comparison.
- Use statutory citations when legal precision matters. Cite § 42-4-5 for the Rhode Island Red and § 42-4-20 for the American burying beetle.
Bottom line for the “six state animals” question
Rhode Island has six official symbols with an animal connection, but it has not published a single official category called “six state animals.” The precise list is the Rhode Island Red as state bird, striped bass as state fish, American burying beetle as state insect, harbor seal as state marine mammal, quahaug as state shell, and calamari as state appetizer. Labeling the grouping clearly lets you use the popular six-item framing without turning the shell and appetizer designations into claims the state does not make.
