Roborovski hamsters need a secure, spacious, deeply bedded enclosure, a solid wheel, a sand bath, a species-appropriate diet and patient, low-pressure interaction. They are exceptionally small and fast, so the best care emphasizes escape prevention and enrichment rather than frequent handling. Set up the habitat before bringing one home, house one hamster per enclosure unless an experienced specialist directs otherwise, and arrange veterinary care with a clinician who treats small mammals.
What makes Roborovski hamsters different?
Roborovskis are the smallest commonly kept hamsters and one of the fastest. Their size does not reduce their need for space: they spend much of their active period running, digging, foraging and exploring. A tiny cage, shallow bedding or a bare layout can prevent those behaviors and makes escapes more likely.

Woodgreen’s guidance says Roborovskis can be difficult to handle and are unsuitable for regular handling, particularly for young children. Plan to observe, feed and interact at floor level rather than expecting a pet that enjoys being picked up. Trust develops through predictable, calm contact.

Choose and secure the enclosure
Floor area and height
Woodgreen’s 2025 guide recommends a minimum floor footprint of 100 × 50 cm and at least 40 cm of height for dwarf and Roborovski hamsters. Hamster Info Ireland gives 4,000 cm² as a minimum in its Ireland context and stresses that larger is better. These figures are recommendations, not universal regulations; use the source relevant to your region and prioritize the greatest usable floor area you can provide.

A secure tank-style enclosure with a well-ventilated lid can prevent the escapes associated with many standard barred cages. If you use bars, measure the actual gap rather than relying on a product label. Check doors, corners, cable openings and lid clips every day; a hamster can exploit a small weakness quickly.
Location and household safety
- Place the enclosure out of direct sun and away from radiators, heaters, air-conditioning drafts and other temperature extremes.
- Choose a quiet room rather than a spot beside televisions, speakers or continuously vibrating appliances.
- Prevent access by cats, dogs and other pets, including when the hamster is outside the enclosure.
- Keep the enclosure on a stable surface that cannot tip when deep bedding or heavy accessories are added.
Build a burrowing, enriching layout
Substrate depth and nesting material
Use soft, dust-controlled paper bedding or another substrate specifically considered suitable for hamsters. Woodgreen recommends at least six inches across most of the enclosure, with a 10–12-inch deeper digging area. Compress the bedding lightly so tunnels hold their shape, but do not pack it so tightly that the hamster cannot move through it.
Provide plain, safe nesting material that can be torn into loose pieces. Avoid cotton-wool-type nesting products: fibers can wrap around limbs or be swallowed. Woodgreen also warns against “seed pod” bedding because of injury and blockage risks. Remove wet patches and spoiled food rather than stripping all familiar scent from the habitat.

Hides, tunnels and heavy objects
Offer several hides and connected tunnels so the hamster can move between covered and open areas. Use stable wooden, ceramic or other hamster-safe structures with no sharp edges or exposed staples. Place heavy items directly on the enclosure floor before adding bedding, or otherwise secure them so a tunnel cannot collapse and an accessory cannot fall onto a burrowing hamster.
Sand bath
A sand bath is a core part of Roborovski enrichment and coat care. Use sand sold for small-animal bathing rather than dusty powders or materials that can irritate the respiratory tract. Provide a substantial area in which the hamster can roll and dig, and sieve or replace soiled sand as needed. The sources emphasize the need for a meaningful sand area but do not establish one universal percentage of enclosure space.
Wheel and running safety
Choose a solid running surface with no mesh or rungs that can trap toes. Hamster Info Ireland recommends at least a 21 cm diameter wheel for Roborovskis and describes 28 cm as a more popular, safer option that can reduce the chance of a cramped running posture. Measure the individual hamster: it should run with a level back and without its nose or hips being forced upward. Mount the wheel securely and check that bedding cannot jam its stand.
Chewing and foraging
Add untreated, hamster-safe wood and other appropriate chew items to help occupy the incisors. Scatter the daily dry-food allowance through clean bedding instead of placing every piece in a bowl. This encourages searching and digging; remove any food that becomes wet, moldy or contaminated.

Feed a balanced diet and provide water
Daily food
Base the diet on a nutritionally complete hamster or rodent-formulated pellet. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) describes pellets as the main component, with limited seeds, grass, grains, occasional insects and small amounts of fruit or vegetables as supplementary foods. The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) recommends measured hamster-specific pellets and warns against muesli-style mixes, in which selective feeding can leave the animal short of key nutrients.
Woodgreen gives approximately 5–8 g of dry food per day for Roborovskis and other dwarf hamsters and recommends scattering that allowance for foraging. Treat 5–8 g as a starting point from a care guide, not an individualized veterinary prescription. Adjust only with advice if weight, age, health or the food’s calorie density calls for it. Introduce any new food gradually and remove fresh food before it spoils.
Water
Fresh, clean water must be available at all times. A stable bowl, a bottle or both can work if the hamster can reach the outlet and the equipment remains clean. Refresh water daily, check a bottle’s ball bearing for flow, and make sure bedding has not blocked the drinking point. A second drinking method can provide useful backup during equipment failure, provided both are secure.
Set up the habitat before arrival
- Measure the usable floor. Confirm the internal dimensions after any divider or raised platform is installed; do not count inaccessible ledges as floor area.
- Install deep bedding. Build at least six inches across most of the enclosure and a 10–12-inch digging zone where the enclosure allows, using safe paper bedding or another appropriate substrate.
- Place hides and tunnels. Create covered routes between sleeping, digging, feeding and sand areas. Stabilize heavy pieces before filling around them.
- Add the wheel and sand bath. Verify a level running posture, a solid surface and a sand area large enough for rolling.
- Secure every opening. Test doors, lids, ventilation panels and cable gaps by applying gentle pressure and checking for spaces wider than the selected bar or mesh specification.
- Prepare food and water. Portion the initial dry-food allowance, set up the drinking system and keep a clean spare water container available.
- Check the room. Remove toxic plants, exposed wires and climbable routes to other pets before the hamster arrives.
Handling, taming and out-of-enclosure time
Allow a new hamster to settle before attempting contact beyond essential care. Interact during its normal active period, not by waking it abruptly. Sit beside the enclosure, speak quietly and offer a small piece of its regular food from a flat hand. A transfer tube or small container is safer than chasing or grabbing from above when you need to move the hamster.

Roborovskis can accelerate suddenly and disappear into narrow spaces. Keep doors closed, block vents and gaps, and supervise every out-of-enclosure session continuously. Use a secure play area with high, smooth sides and no openings that lead behind furniture. Stop if the hamster shows repeated frantic escape attempts; returning it calmly is safer than extending the session.
Children should interact only with an adult present and should not carry the hamster. The animal’s welfare comes before a child’s wish to hold it.

For a general owner, house one hamster per enclosure. Singapore AVS recommends solitary housing, and Hamster Info Ireland warns of severe aggression risks in captive Roborovskis. The RVC leaflet notes that some Russian species may be kept in pairs or single-sex groups in a very large enclosure with close monitoring. Because these recommendations conflict and fighting can cause serious injury, co-housing should be attempted only when a knowledgeable specialist has assessed the individual animals, the enclosure and a separation plan.

Cleaning without destroying the hamster’s security
Woodgreen recommends daily spot-cleaning and a refresh clean every two to three weeks. Each day, remove wet bedding, spoiled food and obviously soiled nesting material; clean bowls and water equipment; and check the wheel and sand. During the larger refresh, replace contaminated substrate, top up bedding and wash equipment with a hamster-safe method that leaves no residue.
Retain a portion of clean, familiar bedding and nesting material when possible. A completely scent-free enclosure can be stressful and may encourage frantic re-marking. Clean in sections if the habitat is large, and return hides and tunnels in a familiar arrangement unless a safety problem requires a change.
Health checks and when to call a veterinarian
Arrange routine examinations with a veterinarian experienced in hamsters or other small mammals. Observe your pet daily so you notice changes in appetite, activity, breathing, posture, droppings, urine and coat condition.

Singapore AVS identifies the following as reasons for prompt veterinary advice:
- lethargy or an unusual drop in activity;
- refusal to eat;
- abnormal, labored or noisy breathing;
- abnormal or absent droppings or urine;
- a swollen or bloated abdomen;
- a head tilt or loss of balance;
- lameness or inability to use a limb;
- overgrown teeth or nails.
Do not attempt to trim teeth, treat breathing problems or give human medication at home. Transport the hamster in a secure carrier with familiar bedding, modest ventilation and protection from drafts, and call the clinic before travel if the animal is weak or breathing abnormally.

What welfare evidence says about enclosure size
A Royal Veterinary College preliminary investigation published in 2023 reported that 12% of surveyed dwarf hamsters were kept in enclosures less than 75 cm in length. That figure is a study finding, not a Roborovski-specific prevalence estimate or a universal welfare threshold. The same paper identified inadequate enclosure sizes and failed co-housing associated with aggression as important welfare concerns, while noting that care guidelines vary and species-specific guidance remains limited. It is a useful reason to evaluate the whole setup—floor area, digging depth, wheel posture, hides and escape security—rather than shopping by cage label alone.

Every day
