Royal Canin Labrador Retriever Wet Food vs. Other Wet Foods for Labs

Royal Canin’s Labrador wet food is one adult-maintenance option, not a proven winner. Learn how to compare its regional products and labels with other wet foods.

Royal Canin Labrador Retriever Adult Loaf in Sauce is one complete-and-balanced option for adult Labs, not a proven better choice than other complete wet foods. Compare the exact food labels for life stage, calories, feeding directions and manufacturer information, then judge the fit for your dog’s health, appetite and body condition. The product details below are specific to the US canned loaf; Royal Canin sells a different Labrador wet-food presentation in the UK.

What the US Royal Canin Labrador wet food is

The US product is called Labrador Retriever Adult Loaf in Sauce Canned Dog Food. Royal Canin markets it for Labradors over 15 months and describes it as complete and balanced for adult maintenance, formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. That statement identifies the food’s intended life stage and nutritional adequacy claim; it is not evidence that the food outperforms another complete adult diet.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The US product page lists a 12-pack of 3 oz cans. It describes calorie control and bone and joint support as product aims. Those are manufacturer-described aims, not proof that the food will produce a particular weight, joint or health outcome in an individual dog. A Labrador-specific formula may be a convenient starting point if its life stage and label details fit your dog, but the breed name alone cannot establish that it is the right food or portion for every Lab.

US label figures

Label item US canned loaf figure How to interpret it
Crude protein 7.3% minimum Guaranteed analysis, as fed
Crude fat 1.7% minimum Guaranteed analysis, as fed
Crude fiber 2.7% maximum Guaranteed analysis, as fed
Moisture 81.0% maximum Guaranteed analysis, as fed
Glucosamine 184 mg/kg minimum Manufacturer-listed guarantee; not an AAFCO essential nutrient
Chondroitin sulfate 19 mg/kg minimum Manufacturer-listed guarantee; not an AAFCO essential nutrient
Energy 299 kcal ME per can; 776 kcal ME/kg Manufacturer-listed values, calculated on an as-fed basis

The product page’s stated package size, 3 oz per can, does not reconcile with its two listed energy values: 299 kcal per can divided by 776 kcal/kg implies a can weighing about 385 g, rather than 3 oz. Check the current can label and the energy statement for the package sold in your market before using either figure to calculate portions. Do not derive calories per gram from these figures until the package-specific information is confirmed.

This matters in practical feeding, not just on paper. If you compare two foods by calories per can, verify that the can sizes match or convert both products to the same unit. A product with more calories per package is not automatically more energy-dense if the package is also larger. Conversely, a small can may contain a substantial part of a dog’s daily energy allowance. Use the current package-specific calorie figure, rather than the front-of-pack breed claim or a can count alone, when working out a daily portion.

The listed ingredients begin with water sufficient for processing, pork by-products, chicken by-products, pork liver and chicken liver. The full declaration also includes grains and other ingredients, vitamins, minerals, fish oil, glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate. Ingredients can tell you what is included, but their order or names alone do not establish ingredient quality, digestibility or nutritional superiority.

Royal Canin notes that glucosamine and chondroitin are not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Their presence on the label is therefore one product detail to consider, not proof of a clinical joint benefit or a reason to choose this food over another complete diet. If you are choosing food to address a joint or other medical concern, discuss the goal with your veterinarian rather than treating a marketing statement or ingredient listing as a treatment claim.

Why the UK product should not be treated as the same food

Royal Canin’s UK page describes Labrador Retriever Adult Chunks in Gravy, a different regional product presentation: a complete feed for adult and mature Labradors over 15 months, sold as 10 x 140 g pouches. It is not the US canned loaf, and its package, formulation details and analysis should not be substituted for the US figures.

UK gravy pouch label item UK page figure
Protein 8.7%
Fat 3.3%
Crude ash 1.6%
Crude fibres 1.25%
Moisture 79%
EPA/DHA 1.0 g/kg
Feeding guidance Given in pouches by dog weight

These are UK-market label figures, not a head-to-head comparison with the US loaf or with another brand. Confirm the local product name and current package label whenever you are comparing foods or following feeding instructions. Product names that sound alike do not guarantee that the recipe, can or pouch size, analytical figures or feeding guidance are the same across countries.

The two regional analyses also should not be read as a simple contest in which the higher as-fed percentage wins. The UK page’s 8.7% protein and 3.3% fat and the US loaf’s guaranteed minimums of 7.3% protein and 1.7% fat are reported for different products and markets. Moisture differs too, and the figures are not necessarily the same kind of value. Check what the figures represent and ask for comparable typical nutrient data if you need a meaningful nutrient-by-nutrient comparison.

How to compare it fairly with another wet food

Compare exact products, not brand reputations or the word “breed” on a package. Use the can or pouch label for each candidate. If a detail is missing, ask the manufacturer rather than infer it from marketing copy. The useful comparison is not simply “Royal Canin versus another brand”; it is whether two specific foods are complete for the same life stage, how their energy and feeding directions compare, what reliable manufacturer information is available and how each fits your Lab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check that the food is complete for your dog’s life stage. In the US, look for an adequacy statement showing the food is complete and balanced for adult maintenance if your Lab is an adult. Distinguish a complete diet from a complementary food intended to be fed with other food or intermittently. For another country, use that market’s label and terminology. The Royal Canin US statement is for maintenance; do not assume it establishes suitability for a puppy, a different life stage or a dog needing a therapeutic diet.
  2. Compare energy using the same unit and package. Record kcal per can or pouch and, where available, kcal per gram. Then use the current package’s feeding directions as a starting point, not a prescription. For the US Royal Canin loaf, the manufacturer page lists 299 kcal per can and 776 kcal/kg, but the values conflict with the page’s stated 3 oz can size; verify the energy content on the actual package before calculating a daily amount. If one manufacturer gives calories per kilogram and another per can, convert only after confirming the actual package weight and the exact product’s energy density.
  3. Compare nutrient figures on a consistent basis. Wet foods contain substantial water, so as-fed percentages should not be compared directly with dry-food percentages. For a rough dry-matter conversion, divide a nutrient percentage by 100 minus the moisture percentage, then multiply by 100. Guaranteed-analysis minimums and maximums are bounds, not exact typical nutrient levels, so this calculation is only a screening aid. Ask the manufacturer for a typical nutrient analysis when you need a more precise comparison or a value not shown on the label.
  4. Review manufacturer information, not just ingredients. Consider who formulates the diet, relevant nutrition expertise, quality-control practices and whether the company can supply more detailed nutrient information. An ingredient list does not establish how well a food is made or how suitable it is for your dog. WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee advises that ingredient lists do not by themselves establish product quality or a manufacturer’s nutrition expertise. Its Guidelines on Selecting Pet Foods, updated March 10, 2021, recommend looking beyond label impressions when evaluating a food.
  5. Account for your individual Lab. Body condition, activity, appetite, stool quality, medical conditions and veterinary advice can all affect the appropriate food and portion. Include treats and any other foods when assessing the total daily intake. If the dog is gaining or losing weight, the label’s suggested amount may need adjustment with veterinary guidance; breed-specific wording does not replace monitoring the dog in front of you.
  6. Verify the regional recipe and current label. Confirm the country, product form, package size, adequacy statement, energy value and feeding directions. A pouch in one market is not automatically interchangeable with a can sold elsewhere. Check the label on the package you will actually feed, especially if an online listing describes a different country’s product or an older package.

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The US loaf’s guaranteed analysis is reported as-fed. That means its percentages include the food’s water. A dry-matter comparison adjusts for moisture, but it does not turn a guaranteed minimum or maximum into a typical laboratory result. For example, a minimum protein guarantee and maximum moisture guarantee cannot reveal the food’s exact protein concentration in a particular batch. In the same way, a guarantee tells you that a value meets a stated bound; it should not be treated as the actual amount in every can.

For a rough dry-matter calculation, subtract the moisture percentage from 100 to estimate the non-water portion. Divide the nutrient percentage by that remainder and multiply by 100. For instance, using the US page’s protein minimum of 7.3% and maximum moisture figure of 81.0% gives a screening calculation of 7.3 ÷ 19 × 100, or about 38.4% protein on that constructed dry-matter basis. This is not a typical analysis or a lab result: it combines a minimum with a maximum, and the actual moisture may be below its maximum. Use this kind of conversion only to avoid an obvious wet-versus-dry mismatch, not to claim an exact nutritional difference.

For a meaningful wet-food comparison, first check that both foods are complete for the same life stage, then compare their energy densities and feeding directions. If one product provides only guaranteed analysis while another provides a typical nutrient analysis, the figures are not equivalent kinds of evidence. Ask each manufacturer for comparable typical values if a specific nutrient is driving the decision. This is especially useful when you are comparing a nutrient not listed on one package or evaluating a food for a health concern with your veterinarian.

The ingredient declaration has a similarly limited role. Royal Canin’s US list includes named animal ingredients, grains, fish oil and added joint-related compounds, but these facts do not independently establish how digestible the finished food is or whether it is superior to another diet. Ingredient lists and marketing terms such as “premium” or breed-specific claims are not substitutes for adequacy, energy and manufacturer information. WSAVA also cautions that marketing phrases may have little practical value for nutritional assessment. A list can help identify ingredients you wish to discuss or avoid, but it cannot on its own answer whether a complete food is nutritionally appropriate or well controlled in manufacture.

How feeding directions fit into the comparison

Royal Canin provides daily amounts by dog weight and activity level for the US loaf and mixed-feeding guidance pairing one can with Labrador dry food. The UK gravy pouch guidance is expressed in pouches by dog weight. These instructions are useful starting points for the particular market product, but they are manufacturer guidance, not an individualized veterinary prescription. They cannot account for every dog’s activity, body condition, treats, other food or medical needs.

Before following a chart, confirm that it belongs to the exact product and package in your home. Do not apply the UK pouch amount to the US can, or calculate a US daily portion from the listed energy values until the package-size discrepancy is resolved. If you mix wet and dry food, count the energy from both foods and from treats rather than adding a full wet-food serving on top of the usual dry-food portion. The US product page’s mixed-feeding advice is specific to pairing a can with Royal Canin Labrador dry food; it should not be assumed to give a precise portion for a different dry diet.

Once a starting amount is chosen, observe your dog rather than treating the printed number as fixed. Body condition, weight trend, appetite and activity help you and your veterinarian judge whether a portion is suitable. If your Lab has a medical condition, a substantial weight-management goal or a persistent change in appetite or digestion, ask your veterinarian how to select and portion food. A complete adult-maintenance statement does not mean the food is intended to treat disease.

How to choose and transition your Lab

Before choosing

  • Match the food to adult maintenance or the life stage identified for your dog.
  • Check whether it is a complete diet or a complementary product.
  • Confirm the package-specific calories and feeding instructions; resolve inconsistencies rather than estimating from a mismatched package size.
  • Consider any veterinary dietary advice, especially if your dog has a medical condition or a weight-management goal.
  • Choose a portion based on the dog’s total intake and observed body condition, adjusting with veterinary guidance as needed.
  • Compare like with like: current labels for the specific market, the same life-stage purpose, and comparable calorie and nutrient information.
  • Ask the manufacturer for typical nutrient values or details about formulation and quality-control practices if a particular nutrient or process matters to your decision.

When changing food

Follow the new food’s package directions and your veterinarian’s advice for an appropriate transition. Introduce the new diet gradually if your dog tolerates gradual changes better, and watch appetite and stool. A food that meets a label’s adequacy statement still may not suit every individual dog. Contact your veterinarian if your Lab has persistent digestive signs, stops eating or needs a therapeutic diet.

Is Royal Canin better than other wet foods for Labs?

The product information establishes that the US Labrador Adult Loaf in Sauce is marketed as a complete-and-balanced adult-maintenance food for Labs over 15 months and supplies manufacturer-listed label and energy details. It does not establish that the food is categorically better, safer, more digestible or more effective than other complete wet foods. A defensible comparison requires the exact competing product labels and relevant manufacturer information, considered against the needs of the individual dog.

That distinction applies to the UK Chunks in Gravy product as well. Its page provides market-specific package, analysis and feeding details, but those figures do not demonstrate superiority over the US loaf or another brand. No matched competitor labels or controlled head-to-head outcome data are supplied by these product descriptions. Avoid choosing a winner based only on breed marketing, ingredient-list impressions, the highest listed protein percentage or a claim about calorie control or joint support.

For a practical decision, identify the exact product available where you live; check completeness and life stage; verify calories and daily directions on the package; compare nutrient information on a consistent basis; and consider the manufacturer’s nutrition and quality-control information. Then weigh those details against your Lab’s body condition, activity, appetite, tolerability and veterinary advice. If those checks leave two foods equally plausible, the label evidence alone does not supply a universal tie-breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Royal Canin Labrador Retriever wet food a complete food?

Royal Canin describes its US Labrador Retriever Adult Loaf in Sauce as complete and balanced for adult maintenance and says it is formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. Check the adequacy statement on the current package in your market; a complementary food is not interchangeable with a complete diet.

How many calories are in a can of Royal Canin Labrador wet food?

The US product page lists 299 kcal ME per can and 776 kcal ME/kg, calculated as fed. It also lists a 3 oz can, which does not reconcile with those energy values. Confirm the current package label and product-specific calorie statement before using the numbers to portion food.

Can I compare the US canned loaf with the UK gravy pouches?

Not as if they were the same product. The US page describes a 12-pack of 3 oz cans of Adult Loaf in Sauce; the UK page describes 10 x 140 g pouches of Adult Chunks in Gravy and reports different regional analysis and feeding directions. Use the label for the exact product and market you are buying.

Is Royal Canin better than other wet foods for Labradors?

The product pages establish product claims and label details, not categorical superiority. Compare specific foods for completeness, life stage, calories, feeding guidance, manufacturer information and fit for your individual dog. Ingredient lists and breed-specific marketing alone cannot establish that one complete food is better.

Should I use the feeding amount on the can as an exact prescription?

No. Manufacturer feeding directions are a starting point for that product, not an individualized veterinary prescription. Take account of your Lab’s weight, activity, body condition, treats and other food, and consult your veterinarian when your dog has a medical condition or weight-management need.

Are the US guaranteed-analysis percentages comparable with dry food percentages?

Not directly. The US wet-food figures are as-fed and include substantial moisture. A dry-matter conversion can serve as a rough screening comparison, but guaranteed minima and maxima are not exact typical nutrient values. Ask manufacturers for comparable typical analyses when a more precise nutrient comparison matters.

Does the US loaf’s glucosamine or chondroitin guarantee prove a joint benefit?

No. The manufacturer lists minimum amounts for both compounds, and notes they are not recognized as essential nutrients by AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Their presence does not by itself prove a clinical outcome. Ask your veterinarian about a specific joint-health concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Royal Canin Labrador Retriever Adult Loaf in Sauce is a manufacturer-described complete adult-maintenance food, but the product information does not show that it is better than other complete wet foods. Compare exact local labels for life stage, calories, feeding directions and comparable nutrient data; verify the US can’s package-specific energy figures before portioning. Choose for your individual Lab’s condition and needs, with veterinary guidance when appropriate.
