A Meals on Wheels worker raised the alarm when Griffiths did not answer the door. In October 2025, the RSPCA WA arranged for Molly to receive her gold WA Animal Welfare Award early, before Griffiths accessed voluntary assisted dying.
How Molly helped after Griffiths fell
PerthNow reported that Griffiths, then 90, fell at his Attadale home on 6 August 2024, hit his head and could not get up. Molly remained close through a severe storm. When Griffiths did not answer the door during a Meals on Wheels delivery, the worker raised the alarm. His daughter, Fiona Rumsa, came to the house, and Griffiths was taken to hospital, where he spent several weeks recovering.

Afterward, Griffiths told PerthNow: “I am absolutely amazed that she didn’t run around anywhere, Molly stayed close to me right until the morning . . . she knew something had happened straight away.”

The account credits Molly with staying beside him; the delivery worker’s concern brought help. The story is not evidence that a pet’s warmth can replace emergency assistance.

What award Molly received—and why it came early
RSPCA WA selected Molly for a gold WA Animal Welfare Award in recognition of her “courageous” act, according to PerthNow. The organisation arranged to present her certificate before the awards ceremony after learning Griffiths was expected to die two days before it took place.
PerthNow reported that Griffiths, then 91, had been diagnosed with cancer and elected to access voluntary assisted dying. The report said he died peacefully in October 2025, surrounded by family, with Molly at his bedside. It did not provide a precise cancer diagnosis or clinical details about his decision.
