Permai, a 35-year-old Asian elephant, left Perth Zoo for Monarto Safari Park in South Australia on 27 January 2025. Hundreds of zoo employees gathered to farewell her, with reports describing staff as visibly emotional. The move was intended to give Permai the company of other female elephants.
Who was the elephant leaving Perth Zoo?
The elephant was Permai, a female Asian elephant. PerthNow reported on 27 January 2025 that she departed Perth Zoo that Monday afternoon. The report said hundreds of employees gathered to say goodbye; its photo captions show Permai walking into her travel crate and staff fastening her safety tethers. PerthNow’s report

This was Permai’s farewell, not a farewell to Tricia. Tricia, Perth Zoo’s matriarch, died in 2022.
Why did Permai move to Monarto?
Perth Zoo said its South Perth site did not have enough space to support a functioning elephant herd. The zoo had announced in 2018 that its elephants would move on, and Permai’s transfer followed Tricia’s death, which left her without the matriarch.

The zoo’s stated priority was female companionship: female elephants need other females, while males may live alone or in loose bachelor groups. In a 13 December 2024 update, Acting Director of Life Sciences John Lemon said, “Female elephants need the company of other female elephants, and we want that for Permai as soon as possible.” This was the zoo’s rationale for the move, rather than an independent assessment of the decision. How was Permai prepared and transported?
A familiar crate and monitored journey
Perth Zoo said the custom-built elephant crates were designed for safety and comfort, with insulation, air conditioning, temperature gauges and cameras. Keepers trained the elephants to enter voluntarily using food and encouragement, helping make the crate familiar. The zoo described Permai’s safety tethers as elephant-sized seatbelts.

ABC reported that Permai travelled in a specially made crate on a truck for an approximately 2,700-kilometre journey to South Australia. The outlet said the trip was planned in shifts and that keeper Jody Polson, who had worked with Permai for 10 years, would accompany her and stay in Adelaide for six to twelve months to help her settle. Perth Zoo’s later account says senior carers and veterinarians drove with her across the Nullarbor for two days before she arrived at Monarto.

ABC reported that driving was chosen after air travel was considered because it was judged best for Permai’s welfare; that is an account of the decision, not an independent comparison of transport methods. Polson told ABC before the transfer, “I see these elephants more than my friends and family, so it’s safe to say that they are my family.” ABC’s report on Permai’s move · Perth Zoo’s retrospective

Permai and Putra Mas were intended to become founding members of Monarto’s regional herd. Perth Zoo’s retrospective says the other females—Burma, Pak Boon and Tang Mo—joined the herd. In August 2025, the zoo said Putra Mas was preparing for a separate transfer, with his own area and bachelor barn at Monarto; its later retrospective records his arrival as the event that completed Perth Zoo’s elephant era. Those later developments followed Permai’s January farewell. Perth Zoo’s August 2025 update on Putra Mas · Perth Zoo’s retrospective
