Both the Saint Bernard and the Newfoundland are extra-large companion breeds with reputations for gentle behavior. The practical differences are less about finding a universally “better” dog than matching your household to a giant dog’s handling needs and coat-care routine. Newfoundland standards emphasize exceptional gentleness and a heavy coat that needs thorough, frequent brushing. Saint Bernard standards emphasize a steady, kindly, trustworthy nature; both the long- and short-haired varieties shed and need regular grooming.

Size figures are not directly interchangeable: the Newfoundland data below are sex-specific averages, while the Saint Bernard standard gives minimum heights. Lifespan figures also come from different organizations and formats, so neither breed can be declared a clear longevity winner from these sources alone.

Saint Bernard vs. Newfoundland at a glance

Question Saint Bernard Newfoundland What the comparison actually shows
Adult size The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 standard sets minimum heights of 75 cm (about 30 in) for males and 70 cm (about 28 in) for females. The reviewed standard does not give a directly comparable weight range. American Kennel Club averages: males 28 in and 130–150 lb; females 26 in and 100–120 lb. The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 standard lists average heights of 71 cm for males and 66 cm for females, with average weights of 64–69 kg and 50–54.5 kg. Both are giant or extra-large dogs. A minimum height for one breed cannot be fairly ranked against an average height for the other.
Temperament described by standards “Steady, kindly, intelligent, courageous, trustworthy and benevolent.” “Exceptionally gentle, docile nature.” The Newfoundland Club of America calls sweetness of temperament the breed’s hallmark and most important single characteristic. These are ideals, not guarantees. Genetics, early socialization, training, health and the individual dog still matter.
Coat and grooming Both long- and short-haired Saint Bernards shed. Regular brushing, baths, nail clipping, ear cleaning and dental checks are part of routine care. A heavy double coat needs thorough brushing at least weekly, with daily brushing during shedding seasons. A slicker brush and long-toothed comb are the tools identified by the AKC profile. Plan for regular work with either breed; the Newfoundland guidance is more explicit about frequent, intensive brushing.
Published lifespan estimate The Royal Kennel Club classifies the lifespan as under 10 years. The AKC lists 9–10 years. The figures are broad organization-specific estimates, not a matched study or a prediction for an individual dog.

How large are Saint Bernards and Newfoundlands?

Newfoundland size figures

The AKC’s current breed profile, accessed in 2026, gives average adult heights of 28 inches at the shoulder for males and 26 inches for females. It lists average male weight at 130–150 pounds and female weight at 100–120 pounds. These are averages, so an individual Newfoundland can fall outside them while still being a sound example of the breed.

The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 Newfoundland standard uses metric measurements: an average male height of 71 cm and weight of 64–69 kg, and an average female height of 66 cm and weight of 50–54.5 kg. Those weights convert to approximately 141–152 pounds for males and 110–120 pounds for females, but the original standard’s metric figures are the authoritative values for that source.

Saint Bernard size figures

The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 Saint Bernard standard sets minimum heights, not averages: at least 75 cm (about 30 inches) for males and 70 cm (about 28 inches) for females. Its current profile classifies the breed as extra large. The reviewed standard does not provide a directly comparable weight range, so assigning a precise Saint Bernard weight comparison would imply evidence that is not established here.

Why the numbers do not produce a simple winner

It is tempting to compare 75 cm with 71 cm and conclude that every Saint Bernard is taller, or to compare the Newfoundland’s published weights with an assumed Saint Bernard range. That would mix different measurement bases. The Saint Bernard values are minimums: they describe the lower boundary accepted by that standard. The Newfoundland values are averages from one organization and averages from another standard. Standards also vary by country.

For planning purposes, treat both breeds as giant dogs. Measure doorways, vehicle access, sleeping space and safe routes through the home before bringing one home. A dog of this scale also makes basic manners a safety issue: pulling, jumping or blocking a doorway is more difficult to manage when the dog is stronger than the person holding the lead.

Temperament: gentle ideals, different wording

What the Saint Bernard standard says

The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 standard describes the Saint Bernard as “Steady, kindly, intelligent, courageous, trustworthy and benevolent.” That wording presents a calm, dependable companion as the breed ideal. The Saint Bernard Club of America advises beginning basic obedience early because the puppy will grow very large; teaching polite behavior before adult size is reached is easier and safer than trying to correct it later.

What the Newfoundland standards say

The Royal Kennel Club’s 2025 standard uses the phrase “Exceptionally gentle, docile nature.” The Newfoundland Club of America’s 2025 standard flyer, hosted by the AKC, gives sweetness of temperament unusual priority: “Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the breed; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed.”

The two descriptions overlap in their emphasis on gentleness, but they are not interchangeable promises. “Steady” and “trustworthy” describe the Saint Bernard ideal in one standard; “exceptionally gentle” and “docile” describe the Newfoundland ideal in another. Neither sentence predicts how every puppy will behave in every home.

What determines the dog you actually live with

Breed standards describe a target, not a behavioral guarantee. Individual temperament is influenced by inherited traits, prenatal and early experiences, socialization, training, health and the situations the dog encounters. Ask to see adult relatives when possible, discuss how puppies are introduced to people and ordinary household handling, and observe whether the breeder can explain temperament decisions rather than relying only on a breed label.

Whichever breed you choose, start reward-based manners training while the dog is still easy for one person to guide. Priorities for a giant dog include loose-lead walking, waiting at doors, keeping four paws on the floor, accepting grooming and responding reliably to a stop or recall cue. These skills protect visitors, children and the dog itself; they are not optional polish.

Grooming and shedding

Newfoundland coat routine

The Newfoundland has a heavy double coat. The AKC recommends thorough brushing at least once a week. During seasonal shedding, brushing becomes a daily task. Its profile specifically suggests a slicker brush and a long-toothed comb, used carefully to reach through the dense coat rather than merely smoothing the surface.

Work in sections so you can see the skin and find tangles early. Keep sessions short and calm for a puppy, gradually teaching the dog to stand or lie still while you handle the coat, feet, ears and tail. The sources do not establish a universal number of grooming hours or a fixed professional-grooming schedule; the time required will vary with coat condition, season, age and the dog’s cooperation.

Saint Bernard coat routine

Saint Bernards occur in long-haired and short-haired varieties, and both shed. The Saint Bernard Club of America recommends regular brushing to keep the coat clean and free of mats and tangles. Its care guidance also includes regular baths, nail clipping, ear cleaning and checking the teeth.

Long-haired individuals generally demand more attention to tangles than short-haired individuals, but the breed’s variety does not remove the need for routine care. A brush suited to the dog’s coat, combined with careful work through areas that mat, is more useful than waiting until loose hair and knots accumulate. Do not assume a short-haired Saint Bernard is maintenance-free: shedding, nails, ears and teeth still require attention.

Which breed requires more grooming?

There is no published head-to-head study in the supplied evidence that measures grooming time for the two breeds. The defensible practical distinction is that Newfoundland guidance explicitly calls for at least weekly thorough brushing and daily brushing during shedding seasons, while Saint Bernard guidance calls for regular brushing and broader routine care. If you dislike frequent coat work, neither breed is a low-maintenance choice. If you are comparing a heavily coated Newfoundland with a short-haired Saint Bernard, the Newfoundland will usually demand the more intensive brushing routine described by its standard guidance, but an individual Saint Bernard’s coat and shedding can change the workload.

Lifespan: what “under 10” and “9–10 years” mean

Newfoundland estimate

The AKC’s current Newfoundland profile, accessed in 2026, lists a life expectancy of 9–10 years. This is a population-level expectation presented by the organization, not a guarantee that a particular dog will reach either boundary.

Saint Bernard estimate

The Royal Kennel Club’s current Saint Bernard profile classifies the breed’s lifespan as under 10 years. It does not provide the same numeric range used by the AKC for the Newfoundland.

Why these figures cannot rank longevity

One source supplies a two-year range and the other supplies a category. They may also reflect different populations, recording methods and editorial conventions. No matched population study establishing a controlled Saint Bernard-versus-Newfoundland longevity difference is identified here. The responsible conclusion is that both are giant breeds for which owners should plan emotionally and financially for a comparatively short lifespan, without promising that one breed will outlive the other.

Health screening and finding a responsible breeder

Newfoundland screening recommendations

The Royal Kennel Club recommends pre-breeding screening for Newfoundland cystinuria, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It lists eye testing as a best-practice scheme. When speaking with a breeder, ask to see the parents’ actual results, confirm which organization issued them and check that the documents identify the dogs being bred. A verbal assurance that parents are “healthy” is not equivalent to documented screening.

Saint Bernard questions

The material used for this comparison does not provide an equivalent Saint Bernard screening checklist. Do not transfer the Newfoundland list and present it as a Saint Bernard standard. Instead, ask the Saint Bernard parent club and your veterinarian for the current recommendations for the country in which the litter is bred, then request documentation for the sire and dam.

Questions that apply to either breed

  • What health tests were completed on both parents, and can you review the certificates?
  • What ages and causes of death have occurred in close relatives?
  • How are puppies socialized and introduced to grooming, handling and ordinary household experiences?
  • What support does the breeder provide if the dog cannot remain with the original owner?
  • Which records, contracts and identification documents accompany the puppy?

Screening lowers avoidable risk; it cannot guarantee a disease-free lifetime. A breeder who welcomes specific questions and supplies records gives you more usable information than one who relies on broad claims about a breed’s reputation.

Which breed fits your household?

Choose based on physical logistics first

Both dogs need a home that can safely accommodate a giant body. Consider whether every regular handler can control the dog, whether flooring and stairs allow safe movement, and whether a vehicle can transport an adult dog for veterinary visits. Plan where grooming will happen and where a wet or shedding dog can be cleaned without turning the entire home into a hazard.

Match your tolerance for training and handling

A gentle breed is not automatically an easy giant dog. Early manners work matters because adult strength magnifies small training gaps. Choose the breed and the individual puppy only if you can commit to consistent training, appropriate socialization and calm handling by everyone in the household.

Match your tolerance for coat care

If you can maintain thorough brushing at least weekly and increase it to daily during a Newfoundland shedding season, that coat routine may be workable for you. If you prefer less dense coat work, a short-haired Saint Bernard may be a better match than a long-haired Saint Bernard or Newfoundland, but it will still shed and still needs brushing, bathing, nail, ear and dental care.

Use the individual dog as the final decision point

Standards help you understand the direction of each breed, but they cannot replace meeting the actual dog. Observe whether an adult is comfortable being touched, whether the breeder’s dogs recover calmly from ordinary disturbances and whether the puppy’s behavior suits your experience level. A well-matched individual with excellent early care is a better choice than selecting solely from a breed stereotype.

A practical decision checklist

  • Space: Can your home, entrances, stairs and vehicle accommodate an extra-large adult?
  • Handling: Can each person responsible for the dog safely guide and groom it?
  • Manners: Do you have a plan for early obedience and ongoing reinforcement?
  • Grooming: Will you brush regularly, increase brushing during heavy shedding and maintain nails, ears, teeth and baths?
  • Evidence: Will you choose a breeder who shares parent health records and explains socialization?
  • Expectations: Can you accept that breed-standard temperament and lifespan estimates describe tendencies and populations, not guarantees?

If your answers are yes for both breeds, let the individual dog, the breeder’s transparency and the coat routine you are genuinely willing to maintain decide between them. If frequent brushing is the decisive issue, compare the actual coats of the dogs you are considering rather than relying only on the breed name.
