Dog allergies are reactions to proteins in dander, skin, saliva, urine and hair—not to a breed label or a particular coat pattern. A Biewer’s coat can also carry pollen and dust, which may be the real trigger. The most reliable plan combines an allergist’s evaluation with consistent exposure reduction at home. Keeping the dog out of the bedroom, washing after contact, cleaning fabrics and floors, running a HEPA air cleaner and arranging grooming to limit direct exposure can reduce allergen contact, but none of these steps promises an allergy-free home.
What causes symptoms around a Biewer Terrier?
Dog allergy develops when the immune system reacts to proteins found in a dog’s dander (tiny flakes of skin), saliva, urine, hair and skin oils. Hair itself is not the only—or necessarily the main—source. A long coat can collect pollen and dust outdoors and redistribute those particles indoors, so symptoms may reflect several exposures at once.

Symptoms that appear around your Biewer Terrier do not prove that the dog is the cause. Pollen, house-dust mites, mold and other environmental allergens can produce the same pattern. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) warns that people can mistake another environmental allergy for dog allergy, while the American Kennel Club (AKC) cautions against diagnosing yourself from symptoms alone.
Timing can provide a clue. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) notes that signs may begin during or shortly after contact and continue after the dog has left because dander remains suspended in air, on furniture or on clothing.

Is a Biewer Terrier hypoallergenic?
No. No dog breed has been shown to be reliably hypoallergenic. ACAAI describes a 2011 comparison in which dog-allergen levels in homes with breeds marketed as “hypoallergenic” did not differ from levels in homes with other breeds. AAAAI likewise states that there are no truly hypoallergenic dogs.
The AKC describes the Biewer Terrier as a longhaired, tri-colored toy terrier. That description tells you what the dog looks like; it does not predict whether a particular allergic person will tolerate a particular dog. No Biewer-specific allergen measurement establishes a lower risk, and low shedding would not eliminate allergens from dander, saliva, urine or the coat’s dust and pollen.
Individual reactions vary. AAAAI specialist Eric Macy, MD, MS, FAAAAI, wrote in an answer dated October 6, 2024: “There are no hypoallergenic dogs.” He added that a challenge test is the only accurate way to determine the relative severity of symptoms for one person exposed to one specific dog in a home environment. Fostering may be a reasonable way to gather that information, but it should not replace medical advice when asthma or severe reactions are involved.

Recognize the possible symptoms
ACAAI lists the following possible dog-allergy symptoms:
- Sneezing, a runny nose or a blocked nose
- Facial pressure or pain caused by congestion
- Red, itchy or watery eyes
- Coughing
- Chest tightness, shortness of breath or wheezing
- A skin rash or hives
A rash or hives can follow a scratch or a lick as well as airborne exposure. Track where and when symptoms occur: after petting, during brushing, in the bedroom, after sitting on a sofa, or even when the dog is not in the room. That pattern can help an allergist separate dog exposure from pollen, dust or another trigger.

Breathing symptoms deserve particular attention. If you have marked difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening wheezing or chest tightness, follow your personal asthma action plan and seek urgent medical care. Do not rely on an air cleaner or an over-the-counter medicine to manage a severe reaction.
Confirm the trigger with an allergist
An allergist or immunologist can test for dog allergens and other likely causes. ACAAI describes skin-prick testing as a common approach; your clinician may choose another method based on your history, medicines and health conditions. Testing is useful because a positive dog result does not explain every symptom, and a negative assumption based only on a breed’s reputation can lead you to overlook pollen or dust.
Bring a short exposure diary to the appointment. Record:
- What you were doing with the Biewer Terrier and how close you were
- Which rooms you occupied and whether the dog had been there earlier
- How quickly symptoms began and how long they lasted
- Whether symptoms appeared outdoors, during high-pollen periods or after cleaning
- Any asthma history, medicines and previous reactions to scratches or licks
AKC reports that up to 80% of people with allergies are allergic to more than one thing. It presents that figure as general guidance rather than as a Biewer-specific statistic, so use testing and your own exposure pattern—not that number—to make decisions.
Build a layered exposure-reduction plan
No single household measure contains dog allergens in one area. ACAAI specifically cautions that restricting a dog to one room will not keep allergens confined there. Think of each measure as reducing one route of exposure, and use the combination you can maintain consistently.

1. Make the bedroom a lower-exposure zone
Keep the Biewer Terrier out of the bedroom at all times, including naps and nighttime visits. Close the door when practical and place a continuously running HEPA air cleaner in the bedroom or another priority living area. This protects the room where many people spend the longest uninterrupted period.

Dander can travel on clothing, hair and air currents, so continue the cleaning and contact measures below.
2. Limit direct transfer from hands, face and clothing
If hugging, kissing or allowing the dog to lick your face reliably triggers symptoms, stop those activities. Pet with a shorter session, avoid touching your eyes and nose, and wash your hands with soap and water after contact. Change or launder clothing that collects visible hair or that you wore during close contact before going to bed.
Ask another household member to handle face-to-face play when possible. If you are the only caregiver, plan hand-washing and a change of shirt after grooming, bathing or extended cuddling rather than assuming a quick wipe will remove allergens.
3. Clean the places where allergens collect
Vacuum floors and furnishings regularly with a high-efficiency vacuum or a system using appropriate filtration and bags. Focus on carpets, rugs, upholstery, cracks around furniture and the dog’s favorite resting areas. If practical, reduce carpeting and other soft surfaces that trap allergens; hard flooring is easier to clean thoroughly.

(Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Wash the dog’s bed, blankets and other fabrics it uses as often as practical. Use washable covers on frequently occupied furniture and launder them routinely. Cleaning is most useful when it removes a reservoir rather than simply moving settled dust into the air.
4. Filter airborne particles continuously
Run a room-size HEPA air cleaner continuously in the bedroom or main living space. HEPA filtration can lower airborne allergen levels over time, but it cannot remove allergens already settled on floors, upholstery, clothing or the dog. Keep doors, filters and room-size recommendations aligned with the device instructions, and treat the purifier as one part of the plan rather than a substitute for an allergist or cleaning.
5. Arrange grooming to minimize your exposure
ACAAI says bathing a dog at least weekly can reduce airborne dog allergen. Bathing is an exposure-reduction step, not a cure, and the effect will not make the breed allergy-free. Have another household member or a professional groomer do the bathing and brushing when possible. If you must brush the Biewer Terrier, do it outdoors to reduce the amount of dander and loose hair brought indoors, then wash your hands and change clothing.
Do not assume that shaving the coat solves the problem. The allergen proteins are not confined to long hair, and a coat can still carry pollen and dust after trimming.
Match each measure to the exposure it addresses
| Measure | Main target | How to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the dog out of the bedroom | Close and prolonged exposure | Apply the rule consistently, including at night | Allergens can still travel beyond the bedroom |
| Wash hands and avoid face licking | Contact transfer from saliva, skin and dander | Wash with soap and water after touching the dog | Does not remove airborne or settled allergens |
| Vacuum with high-efficiency filtration | Floors, rugs and upholstery | Clean regularly, concentrating on resting areas | Vacuuming alone does not clean the dog or clothing |
| Wash dog bedding and covers | Fabric reservoirs | Launder as often as practical | Requires repeatable household routines |
| Continuous HEPA air cleaning | Airborne particles | Place in the bedroom or main living area | Does not remove settled allergen sources |
| Outdoor or delegated grooming | Dander and loose hair released during brushing | Use another adult or a professional when possible | Direct exposure can still occur during unavoidable care |
| Weekly bathing | Airborne dog allergen | Have a non-allergic person handle it when possible | Reduces exposure but is not a cure |
Choose a routine you can sustain
Allergen control is cumulative. A routine that is performed consistently is more useful than an ambitious plan that stops after a few days.

- Note symptoms, location and activity in your exposure diary.
Each week or as practical
- Vacuum floors and furnishings with high-efficiency filtration.
- Wash the dog’s bedding, blankets and furniture covers.
- Arrange bathing at least weekly if your veterinarian considers that schedule suitable, with a non-allergic person doing the work when possible.
- Brush outdoors or use a professional groomer.
Reassess after changes
Change one or two practical measures at a time and observe your symptoms over a reasonable period with your clinician’s guidance. If symptoms remain despite strict bedroom and cleaning measures, the dog may not be the only trigger, or the exposure may be coming from reservoirs you have not addressed. Do not respond by repeatedly adding devices or medicines without confirming the diagnosis.
Medical treatment depends on the symptoms
An allergist can build a treatment plan around your nose, eyes, skin and lungs. ACAAI lists nasal steroid sprays or oral antihistamines for nasal symptoms, antihistamine eye drops for eye symptoms, and inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators for asthma or other respiratory symptoms. The right choice depends on your medical history, other medicines, age and diagnosis; ask your clinician or pharmacist before starting or changing treatment.
AAAAI notes that over-the-counter allergy medicines may relieve symptoms but are not ideal as a long-term strategy for everyone. Avoid using medication to justify continued exposure if it leaves you wheezing, short of breath or otherwise unwell.
Allergy shots
Immunotherapy is a longer-term option to discuss with an allergist. ACAAI describes gradually increasing doses of identified allergens to build tolerance over time. Testing determines which triggers are included and how treatment is tailored. Allergy shots do not work for every person, and the sources do not establish a universal timeline or guarantee that you will tolerate your Biewer Terrier.
ACAAI allergist Allison C. Ramsey, MD, put the possibility this way: “If you are a dog lover, as I am, you can see an allergist and discuss possibly undergoing allergy shots to dogs which may help you happily coexist with a furry friend.” The qualification “may” matters: immunotherapy is a clinician-guided option, not a promise.
Can someone with dog allergies safely own a Biewer Terrier?
Some people with confirmed dog allergy can reduce symptoms enough to live with an individual dog; others cannot, particularly when asthma is involved. There is no breed-based guarantee and no Biewer-specific risk percentage to apply to your household.
Before committing to a dog, discuss the plan with an allergist. If you already live with the dog, use testing, a written exposure plan and symptom tracking to judge whether the arrangement is medically workable. A foster period can reveal how you react to that particular dog in a real home, as AAAAI’s Eric Macy suggested, but severe asthma or previous serious reactions require professional guidance before any challenge.

Common mistakes that keep symptoms going
- Relying on the breed name: “Biewer Terrier” does not mean allergy-free.
- Confusing low shedding with low allergen: allergens come from proteins in dander, saliva, urine, skin and hair.
- Putting the dog in one room and stopping there: allergens can move on air, clothing and furnishings.
- Buying one purifier and ignoring reservoirs: HEPA cleaning addresses airborne particles, not settled allergen on floors, upholstery or bedding.
- Grooming yourself indoors: brushing can release dander and hair where you spend time.
- Self-diagnosing: pollen and dust can mimic dog allergy.
- Using medication as a substitute for evaluation: persistent respiratory symptoms need an individualized plan.
Questions to take to your allergist
- Do my symptoms fit dog allergy, or should we test for pollen, dust mites, mold and other exposures?
- Which tests are appropriate given my current medicines and health history?
- What should I do if contact causes wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath?
- Which nasal, eye or respiratory treatments are suitable for me?
- Could immunotherapy be appropriate, and what would monitoring involve?
- Can you help me design a realistic bedroom, cleaning and grooming plan?
The practical takeaway
Treat your Biewer Terrier as a possible allergen source, not as a hypoallergenic solution. Confirm the trigger with an allergist, make the bedroom a dog-free zone, reduce hand-to-face transfer, clean fabrics and floors, run a HEPA air cleaner continuously and delegate or move grooming outdoors when possible. These measures can lower exposure, while diagnosis and clinician-directed treatment determine whether living with this particular dog is safe and sustainable for you.
