Salamanders are amphibians, but there is no single salamander lifestyle. The group includes animals only 20 mm long and others reported at up to 180 cm; some hatch into aquatic larvae, while others develop directly or give birth to live young. Their permeable skin, seasonal movements, ecological roles and serious conservation pressures make them unusually informative—and unusually vulnerable—animals.

The ten facts below explain what salamanders are, how their bodies and life cycles vary, why disease and climate change matter, and what “endangered” means at the level of a diverse animal group.

1. Salamanders are amphibians, alongside frogs, toads and caecilians

Salamanders belong to the amphibians, one of the three living amphibian orders. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) groups them with frogs, toads and caecilians rather than with reptiles such as lizards. That classification matters because amphibians share traits—including skin that can exchange water and dissolved substances with the environment—that make them biologically different from most familiar land vertebrates.

The number of recognized amphibian species is not fixed. New species continue to be discovered, and genetic methods can distinguish animals that look almost identical. Two salamanders that appear to be the same in the field may therefore represent different species, with separate ranges and conservation needs. A visual identification guide can suggest an answer, but appearance alone is not always decisive.

What this means for identification

  • Use location, body form and behavior as clues rather than proof of a species identity.
  • Be cautious when a local population looks slightly different from a familiar species; genetic work may reveal a distinct lineage.
  • Never assume that information about one salamander applies to every member of the order.

2. Their life cycles do not follow one universal egg-to-adult pattern

Many people learn the amphibian life cycle as eggs, aquatic larvae and adults. That sequence is common, but it is not a rule for every salamander. The IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group’s 2024 conservation-plan chapter notes that some amphibians reproduce by direct development: the young complete more of their development inside the egg and emerge without the familiar free-living larval stage. The same chapter gives the Alpine salamander as an example of live birth.

These alternatives change what a species needs from its surroundings. A salamander with aquatic larvae depends on suitable water during that stage, while a direct-developing species may depend more heavily on the conditions around its nesting site. A live-bearing species has yet another reproductive arrangement. “Salamander habitat” is therefore not one standard package; requirements differ by species and by life stage.

Why life-history variation matters

  • Protecting a breeding pool may be essential for a species with aquatic larvae but insufficient for a species that reproduces away from open water.
  • Survey timing must match the species’ reproductive behavior; looking only for larvae can miss direct-developing or live-bearing salamanders.
  • Conservation plans need species-level information instead of assuming that one intervention fits the whole group.

3. Salamanders range from 20 millimeters to 180 centimeters

Salamander size is one of the group’s most striking contrasts. The IUCN chapter reports that the largest known adult of the Mexican Thorius arboreus measured 20 mm in snout–vent length. At the other extreme, the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) can reach up to 180 cm, a figure the chapter attributes to AmphibiaWeb (2022).

Example Reported measurement How to interpret it
Thorius arboreus (Mexico) 20 mm snout–vent length Largest known adult reported in the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group’s 2024 chapter
Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) Up to 180 cm total length Maximum reported in that chapter; the chapter cites AmphibiaWeb (2022)

Those measurements are not interchangeable: one is snout–vent length, while the other is a maximum total length. They also describe reported extremes, not the size of every adult in either species. In practical terms, the word “salamander” can refer to a tiny animal that is easy to overlook or to one of the largest living amphibians.

4. Permeable skin ties salamanders to local environmental conditions

USGS explains that salamanders have moist, permeable skin. Water and some dissolved substances can cross that skin, which helps the animals maintain their physiology but also leaves them vulnerable to drought and toxic substances. Their skin is therefore an interface with the surrounding air, soil and water rather than a simple protective shell.

This sensitivity helps explain why salamanders can serve as indicators of ecosystem health. A population’s condition may reflect changes in moisture, contamination or habitat quality before those changes are obvious to a casual observer. An individual sighting, however, cannot prove that a particular pollutant is present or absent. Interpreting salamanders as indicators requires repeated observations and knowledge of the species and site.

What observers should and should not conclude

  • Reasonable conclusion: salamanders are biologically connected to the conditions around them.
  • Overreach: one healthy or sick animal identifies a specific chemical, disease or cause.
  • Useful practice: record the date, place, weather and habitat context when reporting observations to a local monitoring project.

5. They are both predators and prey in food webs

USGS notes that salamanders eat insects, including mosquitoes, and are eaten by larger animals. This gives them two linked ecological roles: they are predators of smaller creatures and prey for animals higher in the food web.

The mosquito example should not be turned into a promise of measurable pest control. The available evidence supports salamanders’ place in the food web, not a universal claim about how many mosquitoes a population removes or whether it can replace public-health measures. Their importance is broader: removing salamanders can affect both the organisms they consume and the animals that consume them.

Why food-web roles vary

Diet and predators differ with species, body size, life stage and location. An aquatic larva does not encounter exactly the same prey or predators as a terrestrial adult. That is another reason to avoid treating a single salamander species as representative of the entire order.

6. The 2023 global assessment placed 60% of salamander species in threatened categories

The IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group’s Second Global Amphibian Assessment (2023) reported that 60% of salamander species fell into the three threatened IUCN Red List categories: Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable. This is an assessment result, not a permanent percentage; classifications can change as species are reassessed and as evidence improves.

Assessment term Meaning in this statistic
Critically Endangered One of the three threatened Red List categories included in the 60% figure
Endangered One of the three threatened Red List categories included in the 60% figure
Vulnerable One of the three threatened Red List categories included in the 60% figure

The figure describes salamander species globally. It does not mean that 60% of individual animals are declining, that every country has the same pattern, or that every salamander a person encounters is threatened. For a particular species, consult its current Red List entry and local conservation authority.

7. Habitat loss, climate change and disease are major conservation pressures

The Second Global Amphibian Assessment identifies agriculture as the most common cause of amphibian habitat loss and degradation. It also reports that the leading cause associated with increases in amphibian extinction risk shifted from disease during 1980–2004 to climate-change effects during 2004–2022. Those are amphibian-wide assessment findings, not a salamander-only ranking, but salamanders are part of the group facing these pressures.

How the pressures can interact

  • Habitat loss and degradation: conversion of land can remove breeding or shelter sites and alter water conditions.
  • Climate change: changing temperature and moisture can affect reproduction, development and survival, especially for animals whose skin and life cycle depend on local conditions.
  • Disease: pathogens can add mortality to populations already stressed by habitat or climate changes.

The assessment also highlights habitat protection as an area where some amphibian species show recovery. That does not guarantee recovery everywhere: effective action depends on the species, the place and the threat being addressed.

8. Bsal is a salamander pathogen, and its U.S. status is date-sensitive

Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, commonly called Bsal, is a fungus that USGS describes as causing mass die-offs of wild salamanders in Europe. In a USGS article published in 2022, the fungus had not appeared in U.S. salamander populations as of May 2022. That statement is not a verified 2026 status update, so it should be read with its date attached.

USGS also reported that more than 750,000 salamanders were legally imported into the United States from 2010 through 2014. This historical trade figure helps explain why wildlife movement is considered a pathway of concern; it is not a current estimate of imports.

Responsible handling and reporting

  • Do not move salamanders, eggs or water between sites.
  • Follow current state, federal or local wildlife guidance before collecting or transporting any amphibian.
  • Report unusual mortality through an appropriate wildlife-health or conservation authority rather than attempting to diagnose a pathogen yourself.

9. Some species make seasonal breeding migrations

The IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group identifies late March as peak salamander migration season across much of the Northern Hemisphere. It specifically names spotted and marbled salamanders moving toward breeding pools, sometimes crossing roads. This is a seasonal pattern for some species and regions, not a universal calendar for all salamanders.

How to help during migration

  1. Check local wildlife advisories for known migration nights and road-crossing areas.
  2. Drive slowly and watch the pavement and road edges when conditions are wet and mild.
  3. Never take an animal to another pond or habitat; relocation can spread disease and separate it from its breeding population.
  4. If local authorities organize a monitored crossing effort, follow their safety and handling instructions exactly.

Migration observations are most useful when they include the date, location and species identification confidence. Because schedules vary with weather and geography, a late-March peak should guide attention rather than substitute for local information.

10. Conservation solutions must be matched to species and place

Salamanders are the most threatened of the three amphibian orders in the global assessment, but “save the salamanders” is not a single action plan. A species with aquatic larvae may need clean, connected breeding water; a direct-developing species may depend on terrestrial moisture and shelter; a population exposed to disease may require movement controls and surveillance. The correct intervention follows the biology and threat of the population involved.

A practical conservation checklist

  • Protect habitat: conserve breeding sites and surrounding areas rather than focusing on one isolated pond.
  • Maintain connectivity: seasonal movements can be interrupted by roads or fragmented habitat.
  • Reduce disease pathways: do not transport animals, eggs or water without official authorization and biosecurity procedures.
  • Support monitoring: repeated, well-documented observations help scientists detect changes in distribution and timing.
  • Use current species assessments: global percentages provide context, while local decisions require the latest information for the species and region.

How to learn which salamander lives near you

A salamander field guide can be useful for narrowing an identification, especially when paired with a reputable regional checklist and a record of where and when the animal was found. Because some species look alike and genetic techniques may be needed to separate them, treat a guide as an identification aid rather than a guarantee. Photograph the animal without handling it, note the habitat and location, and submit records to a local natural-history or conservation program that accepts them.

The takeaway

Salamanders are a remarkably varied amphibian group: their bodies span extreme sizes, their reproduction includes larvae, direct development and live birth, and their permeable skin links them closely to environmental conditions. They help structure food webs while serving as prey, yet the 2023 global assessment placed 60% of salamander species in threatened Red List categories. Protecting them requires species-specific habitat work, careful disease prevention and attention to local geography and dates—not a one-size-fits-all solution.
