Choose the specific food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, fits their health needs, provides appropriate nutrients and calories, and agrees with them. The protein name—and its place in the ingredient list—cannot establish overall quality.
How to choose between salmon and chicken dog food
Compare the exact recipes, not just the protein names. Start with the nutritional adequacy statement and life stage, then check calories, nutrient information, the full ingredient list, and your dog’s history and tolerance. If your dog has a medical condition or persistent symptoms, involve your veterinarian before changing diets.
Check that the food is complete and balanced
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement saying the food is complete and balanced for the life stage relevant to your dog, such as growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that this claim is supported by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial. The statement identifies the life stage covered; a food intended for one stage is not automatically appropriate for another.
Compare calories and nutrients in the exact products
Use each package’s calorie information and guaranteed analysis, rather than assuming salmon or chicken recipes have a particular nutrient profile. If one product is wet and the other dry, their guaranteed-analysis percentages are not directly comparable because moisture dilutes the listed nutrient percentages. FDA says typical canned pet food is 75–78% moisture, while typical dry food is 10–12%; convert the nutrient values to a dry-matter basis when comparing products with substantially different moisture levels.

For a dry-matter comparison, divide the guaranteed-analysis percentage for a nutrient by the food’s dry-matter percentage, then multiply by 100. Dry matter is 100 minus the moisture percentage. For example, a food with 10% moisture is 90% dry matter. This helps compare concentrations; it does not by itself show which food is better for your dog.
Read the whole ingredient list, but don’t treat it as a score
Ingredients are listed by weight as fed, so moisture affects their order and apparent prominence. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that a high-moisture ingredient listed near the top may contribute less to the food’s dry-matter nutrition than its position suggests. Nutrient content matters more than ingredient-list impressions: dogs need nutrients, not a particular ingredient name.

Is salmon better for a dog’s skin?
Salmon is a source of marine omega-3 fats, including EPA and DHA, which can help support the skin barrier and modulate inflammation. That is not a guarantee that a salmon recipe will resolve itching or outperform a chicken recipe. The amount and type of omega-3s in the specific food matter, and the ingredient name alone does not establish a therapeutic amount.
VCA Animal Hospitals explains that many dog foods already contain omega-3s and recommends discussing appropriate amounts with a veterinarian. Ask the veterinary team before adding fish oil or another supplement; extra supplementation may be unnecessary or unsuitable for your dog.

Does salmon dog food work for a suspected chicken allergy?
Not necessarily. Chicken is among the common food allergens in dogs, but other proteins and carbohydrates can also trigger reactions. A salmon recipe may contain other ingredients your dog has eaten before, and salmon on the label does not establish that the food is safe for a dog with suspected chicken allergy.
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes possible cross-reactivity between chicken and fish proteins. It also identifies a restricted, eight-week diet trial as the current diagnostic test for food allergy in dogs and cats. In that trial, the selected diet must be fed exclusively—without other foods, treats, chew toys, or flavored medications, including parasite preventatives. The article reports that approximately 95% of dogs respond by eight weeks in the context of these diagnostic trials; this does not mean that 95% of dogs have food allergies.

Do not try to diagnose an allergy by switching to an ordinary retail salmon food. Your veterinarian can evaluate other possible causes of itching or digestive signs and determine whether a trial is appropriate. Veterinary hydrolyzed or carefully selected novel-protein diets may be used for this purpose. Retail “limited ingredient” labeling does not provide the same assurance against trace ingredients from shared production as veterinary diets; Merck also notes that over-the-counter foods can contain trace ingredients from shared manufacturing environments.

- Adequacy and life stage: Confirm the complete-and-balanced statement covers your dog’s age or reproductive state, and note whether it is based on a nutrient profile or feeding trial.
- Calories and nutrient levels: Compare the exact recipes’ calorie information and guaranteed analyses. Convert to dry matter when moisture differs substantially.
- Full ingredient list and diet history: Consider every ingredient and what your dog has eaten before, especially if a veterinarian is investigating a possible reaction.
- Health and tolerance: Account for your dog’s medical needs and how they do on the food. Persistent itch or digestive problems warrant veterinary advice rather than repeated unsupervised food changes.
- Omega-3 information: Look for actual nutrient information rather than assuming every salmon recipe supplies a useful amount of EPA or DHA. Ask a veterinarian before adding a supplement.
For a routine change between appropriate foods, transition gradually. If the change is part of a veterinarian-directed allergy trial or treatment plan, follow that plan rather than substituting a retail recipe.

So, which should you choose?
Choose salmon if the particular recipe better fits your dog’s nutritional needs, life stage, calorie requirements, health context, and tolerance. Choose chicken on the same basis. Without a comparison of two exact product labels and your dog’s circumstances, the protein source alone cannot determine a winner.
