Sometimes, but loose sand is not an established all-purpose replacement for commercial cat litter. Some cats accept sand or soil, particularly if they are used to toileting outdoors. For a routine indoor litter box, veterinary guidance generally favors fine, sand-like, unscented clumping litter. A cat’s own preference, the box’s cleanliness and any health issues matter more than assuming every cat will use sand.
When sand may work for a cat
Sand or soil can be appropriate in specific, preference-led situations. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP cat-friendly environment guidelines say a hospitalized cat accustomed to eliminating outdoors may need soil or sand if its familiar litter is unavailable. The 2025 iCatCare consensus guidelines also describe a soft, rakeable sand or soil latrine for cats with outdoor access. AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidance notes that cats may prefer substrates they use outdoors. These recommendations address context and individual preference; they do not establish loose sand as equivalent to formulated litter.

Be precise about the material: loose sand is not the same thing as commercial sand-like or clay-based litter. AAFP’s Cat Friendly Practice guide says cats prefer soft, easy-to-rake substrates and that most prefer unscented, clumping sand litter. In that context, “sand” can refer to the texture of a formulated litter, not a box filled with loose sand.

How loose sand compares with routine litter
Veterinary guidance generally recommends fine particles with a sandy texture, unscented and clumping, for routine litter-box use. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidelines describe this as typical “in most cases”; Merck likewise says many cats prefer small clumping particles and often recommends unscented litter. That guidance is about preferred characteristics, not a guarantee that one substrate will suit every cat.

The veterinary sources cited here do not establish that loose sand matches formulated cat litter for absorbency or odor control. A vet-reviewed Catster article updated September 15, 2026, says sand tracks easily and does not offer odor control, and cautions against collecting sand not intended for sale because it may be contaminated with parasites or microbes. Those are consumer-article cautions, not results of a controlled comparison or veterinary-guideline testing. Avoid assuming any particular loose sand is clean or will manage waste effectively.
How to change your cat’s litter
- Choose a suitable texture. If you want a sand-like option, consider commercially formulated fine-grain, unscented clumping litter rather than assuming loose sand will perform the same way.
- Mix gradually. Cornell advises adding small amounts of the new litter to the old rather than making a sudden change. A quick switch can cause some cats to reject the box.
- Watch box use. Make the box accessible and suitable for your cat’s age and mobility. Keep it clean: Merck recommends scooping daily and cleaning the full box at least weekly.
- Respond to rejection. If your cat avoids the box after a change, return to a substrate it reliably uses and consider whether the box, location or the cat’s health may be contributing.
When litter-box trouble needs a veterinarian
New or persistent house-soiling should not automatically be treated as a preference problem. Cornell notes that medical conditions, litter aversion, and preferences for a particular surface or location can all contribute, and recommends a veterinary examination to check for underlying causes.
