Usually, no. Savannahs do shed, but breed-care guidance describes their short coat and lack of a heavy undercoat as relatively low-maintenance rather than excessive. You should still expect loose hairs, with the amount changing by season, environment and the cat’s health.
Weekly brushing is a practical routine for many Savannahs. Brush more often when shedding increases, and contact a veterinarian if you see bald patches or significant hair loss rather than ordinary loose fur.

What Savannah cat shedding normally looks like
A Savannah is not hair-free or shed-free. Individual hairs will come loose and may appear on bedding, furniture, clothing and floors. The key difference is volume: The International Cat Association (TICA) describes the breed as having a short coat without a heavy undercoat and says it requires little grooming. PetMD likewise says Savannahs do not shed excessively.

Those descriptions set a general expectation, not a promise about every cat. Two Savannahs can leave different amounts of hair in the home. Seasonal changes, indoor temperature, daylight exposure, stress and underlying health issues can all affect the pattern. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that shedding varies with health and other factors, so a change from your cat’s usual amount matters more than an exact number of hairs.

No reliable source provides a percentage, hair count or quantitative ranking for Savannah shedding. It is more accurate to describe the breed qualitatively: expect some routine loose hair, but generally less coat maintenance than a cat with a long, dense or heavily undercoated coat.
Why the coat is usually considered low maintenance
Short hair means less visible buildup
Savannah fur is short, so loose hairs are generally less conspicuous than the long strands produced by long-haired cats. Short hairs can still stick to fabric and collect in corners, but they are less likely to form large tangles or mats when the coat is healthy.
No heavy undercoat
TICA’s description of a coat without a heavy undercoat is the main reason grooming demands are considered modest. An undercoat is the dense, soft layer that often produces substantial seasonal shedding in other cats. Its absence does not stop shedding; it simply means there is usually less dense material to remove during routine care.

Even a relatively easy coat needs monitoring. Brushing removes loose hairs before they spread through the home and gives you a chance to notice skin irritation, parasites, scabs or areas where hair is thinning. It should supplement, not replace, normal veterinary care.

How season and health change the amount of hair
Many cats shed more during seasonal coat changes. TICA recommends occasional brushing and more frequent brushing during shedding season. A Savannah kept indoors may experience a less obvious seasonal pattern because artificial light and stable temperatures reduce the sharp difference between outdoor seasons, but individual responses still vary.
Environment can also influence what you notice. A cat that spends more time on dark furniture may appear to shed more simply because the hairs are easier to see. Changes in household routine, travel or stress can alter grooming behavior and make loose hair more noticeable. These observations are useful context, but they do not identify a medical cause by themselves.
Health is the important dividing line. AAHA advises that shedding patterns are affected by health, while the ASPCA recommends veterinary investigation when a cat develops bald patches or significant hair loss. A sudden, marked change deserves more attention than a gradual increase during a normal shedding season.

Start with weekly brushing
PetMD’s Savannah care guidance suggests brushing once a week. For many households, that is an easy baseline: choose a calm time, brush the entire coat gently and stop if the cat becomes distressed. Weekly care also makes it easier to recognize what is normal for your individual cat.

Increase frequency during heavier shedding
When you see more loose fur than usual during a seasonal change, add sessions rather than waiting for hair to accumulate. TICA’s advice is flexible: brush occasionally as a baseline and more frequently when the cat is shedding more. The right interval is the one that removes loose hair without irritating the skin or turning grooming into a struggle.
Use a simple tool
TICA specifically names a stainless-steel brush or comb as a suitable choice. The reviewed breed-care sources do not establish that Savannahs need a specialized de-shedding device. A basic tool used gently and consistently is preferable to aggressive scraping that can damage the coat or skin.
Make the session comfortable
- Choose the setting: Work in a quiet room when your cat is relaxed, not immediately after vigorous play or during a stressful event.
- Check before brushing: Look for tenderness, scabs, redness or a patch where the hair is already thin. Do not repeatedly brush a painful area.
- Follow the coat: Use light strokes in the direction the fur lies. Short sessions are safer than forcing the cat to remain still.
- Inspect the brush: Note whether the amount of removed hair is roughly consistent with previous sessions. A dramatic change is a reason to monitor closely and seek veterinary advice if it persists.
Keeping loose hair under control at home
Regular grooming reduces the amount of fur released onto household surfaces. Vacuuming hair from floors and furniture is another practical measure recommended in the ASPCA’s general cat-grooming advice. Concentrate on the places your cat sleeps, perches or rubs against, where loose hair tends to collect.
- Brush on a washable mat or towel so removed fur can be gathered and discarded.
- Wash bedding and throws regularly, following the fabric-care instructions.
- Use a vacuum suitable for pet hair on floors, upholstery and other surfaces where fur accumulates.
- Empty or clean the vacuum as directed so collected hair does not reduce its performance.
These steps manage household hair; they are not a treatment for cat allergies. Allergic reactions are driven by proteins, not simply by the visible amount of fur.

Normal shedding versus hair loss that needs attention
| What you notice | More consistent with ordinary shedding | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Loose hairs on bedding, clothing or floors | Scattered hairs with an even-looking coat and no skin discomfort | Continue the routine brushing and household cleaning that suit your cat. |
| More hair during a seasonal change | A temporary increase that settles and does not create bare areas | Brush more often while the increase lasts and monitor the coat. |
| Bald patch or clearly thinning area | Not explained by ordinary loose hairs alone | Arrange a veterinary examination, as the ASPCA advises. |
| Significant or sudden hair loss | Outside the usual low-maintenance pattern | Contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the cause from appearance. |
Do not assume that a visible patch is caused by shedding. Skin disease, parasites, allergies, pain, overgrooming and other conditions can look different from one another, and coat appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis. A veterinarian can examine the skin and determine whether testing or treatment is needed.
Are Savannah cats hypoallergenic?
Low shedding and allergy safety are separate questions. The Savannah Cat Association’s frequently asked questions explain that all domestic cats produce the allergen Fel d 1 and that answers about Savannahs being hypoallergenic are mixed. The available breed-care information does not establish that Savannahs reliably produce less Fel d 1.
Because the allergen is produced by the cat rather than being identical to the visible hair, a tidy coat does not guarantee an easier reaction. Anyone with cat allergies should treat an individual trial as a health decision: discuss exposure with a physician or allergist, avoid assuming one Savannah will match another, and do not rely on brushing or vacuuming as a medical solution.

A useful comparison focuses on care requirements rather than an unsupported ranking of breeds. The sources reviewed do not provide reliable quantitative comparisons between Savannahs and named breeds, but these coat conditions illustrate what the routine means in practice.

| Coat situation | Expected hair management | Brushing approach | When concern rises |
|---|---|---|---|
| Savannah short coat without a heavy undercoat | Some loose hair, generally modest maintenance | Weekly is a practical starting point; increase during heavier shedding | Bald patches or significant change from the cat’s normal pattern |
| Long or densely undercoated cat | Loose hair may be more visible and tangling risk may be higher | Frequency depends on coat condition and the individual cat | Any painful matting, skin change or abnormal loss |
| Any cat with suspected abnormal hair loss | Not a routine grooming issue to solve at home | Avoid aggressive brushing over tender or bare areas | Prompt veterinary assessment is appropriate |
Answers to common Savannah shedding questions
How much do Savannah cats shed?
They shed a modest amount in general breed descriptions, but they are not shed-free. The amount varies by season, environment and health, and no dependable numerical shedding rate has been established.
How often should I brush a Savannah cat?
Use weekly brushing as a straightforward routine, following PetMD’s guidance. TICA’s wording allows occasional brushing as a baseline, with more frequent sessions during shedding season. Adjust for your cat’s coat and tolerance.
Do I need a special de-shedding tool?
Not according to the sources reviewed. TICA specifically identifies a stainless-steel brush or comb. There is no established evidence here that a specialized device is necessary for Savannahs.
Is finding a few hairs around the house a problem?
No. Scattered loose hairs are expected from a normal coat. The concern is a marked change, bald patch or significant loss rather than an isolated hair on furniture.
Can grooming prevent allergies?
No. Brushing and vacuuming can reduce loose hair in the home, but they do not remove Fel d 1 or guarantee that an allergic person will tolerate a Savannah.
When should I call the veterinarian?
Call when you see bald patches, significant hair loss or other signs that the coat has changed abnormally. The ASPCA specifically recommends investigation of these signs, and AAHA notes that health can alter shedding patterns.
Bottom line for prospective owners
Savannah cats generally shed, but their short coat and lack of a heavy undercoat make the breed relatively easy to maintain. Plan for weekly brushing, increase it during heavier seasonal shedding, and manage loose hair with ordinary household cleaning. Keep expectations individual: a Savannah is not guaranteed to be low-shed or allergy-safe. Any bald patch or substantial departure from the cat’s normal coat warrants veterinary attention.
