Many Savannah cats enjoy playing with water, but not every Savannah does. The International Cat Association (TICA) describes many as enthusiastic water players, and the Savannah Cat Association reports that owners often see their cats join showers or baths. Those descriptions are observations, not a measured statistic, so breed reputation cannot predict an individual cat.
Let your cat decide whether to approach water. Voluntary splashing in a shallow, controlled setting is different from swimming, and curiosity about a faucet does not make a cat safe around a deep tub or pool. Any Savannah that enters deep water needs direct supervision, and every cat needs fresh drinking water whether or not it plays.

What “liking water” means for a Savannah cat
Water interest can show up in several unrelated ways. A Savannah may bat at a dripping tap, step into a shower, splash in a shallow basin, tolerate a bath for grooming, or swim briefly. Another cat from the same breed may avoid wet paws entirely. Treat these as separate behaviors rather than assuming that success in one predicts success in another.

Water play is usually self-directed: the cat approaches a stream, pats the surface, or sits beside a shallow container. TICA’s breed profile says many Savannahs love this kind of play. The Savannah Cat Association similarly says most, but not all, enjoy bathing and water play and describes owners seeing cats join showers and tubs.

Baths and showers
A cat that chooses to stand near a shower may still dislike being held under a spray. A bath may be tolerated for a short grooming need without being enjoyable. Never use a breed tendency as a reason to restrain a reluctant cat.
Swimming
Swimming is a higher-risk situation because the cat can become tired, panic, slip, or fail to find an exit. Apparent confidence around water is not proof that a Savannah can be left alone in a tub, pool, pond, or other deep container.
Drinking
Interest in playing with water does not replace drinking. TICA recommends fresh, clean water every day, and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises keeping fresh water available at all times.

Veterinarian-reviewed guidance from Catster, updated March 8, 2026, characterizes the Savannah’s water interest as anecdotal and says personality, past experiences, and individual preference shape the response. Early positive exposure may make a particular cat more comfortable, while a frightening slip, forced bath, loud spray, or slippery surface can create avoidance.
“Many” and “most” are qualitative words, not percentages. No reliable study establishes what proportion of Savannah cats enjoy water, and the available breed descriptions do not show whether preferences differ by generation, age, sex, or household. It is accurate to say that water interest is common enough to be recognized as a breed tendency; it is not accurate to assign a numerical probability to your cat.

How to read your cat’s response
Watch the whole body, not just whether the cat stays in the room. A relaxed cat may approach voluntarily, keep a loose posture, sniff or paw at the surface, and leave and return without being blocked. These behaviors support allowing brief, supervised exploration.
End the interaction when the cat repeatedly tries to retreat, crouches tightly, flattens its ears, vocalizes in distress, swats, pants, scrambles, or freezes. Do not carry the cat back to the water for “one more try.” Giving it an unobstructed route away is part of safe handling.

Safe voluntary water play
There is no formal, evidence-tested Savannah swimming or water-acclimation protocol in the available veterinary and breed guidance. You can still reduce preventable risks by keeping experiments simple and optional.
- Choose a shallow setup. Use a stable basin or a few millimeters of water on a washable surface. Avoid starting in a bathtub filled deeply or near an open pool.
- Keep an escape route. The cat should be able to step out without climbing over a high wall or being lifted by you. Place a nonslip mat nearby so wet paws do not slide.
- Invite, do not place. Set the container down and let the cat investigate. Never push its paws into water or hold it in place.
- Stay within arm’s reach. A curious cat can move from a shallow dish to a deeper hazard quickly, especially around faucets, toilets, tubs, or open doors.
- Stop at the first clear stress signal. Drain the container, dry splashed areas, and let the cat retreat. A short positive session is safer than trying to increase duration.
- Inspect the area afterward. Put away containers, close taps, and remove cleaning products so the cat cannot continue exploring unsupervised.
Swimming safety: supervision is mandatory
Catster’s veterinary guidance recommends supervision whenever a Savannah swims because a cat may get into trouble or travel farther from an edge than expected. This applies even if the cat has entered water voluntarily before.
- Never leave a swimming Savannah unattended. Stay close enough to lift the cat out immediately, rather than watching from another room.
- Provide a clearly reachable exit. Smooth-sided containers can trap a tired cat. A shallow step or stable ramp may help the cat get out, but the sources do not establish any particular swimming product as effective.
- Control access to deep water. Close doors to bathrooms, laundry areas, ponds, and pools when you cannot supervise. Use physical barriers appropriate to the setting; breed confidence is not a substitute for a barrier.
- Do not test endurance. A cat that can paddle across a short distance may still fatigue or panic in colder, deeper, or moving water.
- Dry and warm the cat after an unplanned swim. Towel-dry gently and monitor behavior. Seek veterinary advice if the cat coughs, breathes abnormally, becomes weak, or seems distressed after water exposure.
The consulted sources do not evaluate life jackets, pool alarms, barriers, or other swimming products for Savannahs. Do not treat an untested accessory as a guarantee of safety.

Bathing and showering without irritating the skin
Most healthy cats do not need routine baths unless a veterinarian or a specific contamination problem calls for one. If your Savannah must be cleaned, prepare everything before bringing the cat into the room so the session can be brief.

Products to avoid
Catster advises against bubble baths, fragranced soaps, and shampoos that are not made for animals because they can irritate sensitive skin. The available guidance does not establish human bath products as safe for cats. Use only a product selected for cats and appropriate to the reason for bathing; follow its label and veterinary instructions.
A lower-stress bath setup
- Place a nonslip mat in an empty sink or shallow tub.
- Use comfortably lukewarm water and keep the level low enough that the cat can stand securely.
- Keep water away from the face, ears, and nose; use a damp cloth for those areas if cleaning is necessary.
- Rinse thoroughly so residue does not remain on the coat for the cat to ingest while grooming.
- Towel-dry in a warm, draft-free room and allow the cat to leave once the necessary cleaning is complete.
If the cat fights restraint, the coat is matted, or the substance on the fur may be toxic, stop attempting home bathing and contact a veterinarian or qualified groomer for instructions.
Fresh drinking water is required every day
Water play and hydration are different care needs. Cornell’s feline health guidance says fresh water should be available at all times. TICA likewise recommends fresh, clean water daily and notes that a filtered fountain can be used instead of a bowl.
| Option | What the guidance supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Clean bowl | Appropriate way to provide accessible drinking water. | It is not inferior for every cat. |
| Running or filtered fountain | Some cats may drink more from moving water; TICA lists fountains as an alternative to bowls. | A fountain is not a Savannah-specific requirement or a swimming-safety device. |
| Water used for play | Can enrich a willing cat under supervision. | It does not replace a dedicated supply of clean drinking water. |
Whichever method you use, refresh the water regularly and clean the container so hair, food, and debris do not accumulate. Offer drinking water in a location the cat can reach without entering a shower, tub, or other hazard.

Kitten precautions around faucets and household chemicals
The Savannah Cat Association notes that kittens can be curious about faucets and cabinets and recommends a safe area when a kitten cannot be supervised. In practical terms, close cabinet doors that contain cleaners, secure access to medicines and chemicals, and do not leave a tap running for an unattended kitten.
Check bathrooms and utility rooms before closing a door or leaving home. A kitten that was only batting at a trickle yesterday may climb into a sink or open toilet today. Removing access is more reliable than expecting the kitten to remember a boundary.
Common misconceptions
“All Savannahs love water.”
False. Breed organizations describe a tendency, while also stating that some Savannahs do not enjoy bathing or water play. Individual temperament and experience remain decisive.
“If a Savannah likes a shower, it can swim safely.”
False. Standing beside a shower is not the same as paddling in deep water. Swimming requires direct supervision and a reliable exit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A water-loving cat does not need a bowl.”
False. Cats still need continuously available fresh drinking water. A fountain may encourage some cats to drink more, but it is optional.

“Human shampoo is harmless if the cat rinses quickly.”
Unestablished and potentially irritating. Use cat-formulated products only when bathing is necessary, and avoid bubble baths and fragranced soaps.
When to call your veterinarian
Ask your veterinarian for individualized advice if your Savannah needs frequent bathing, has recurring skin irritation, or avoids water while also drinking substantially less. Contact a veterinary clinic promptly after a water incident if the cat has coughing, labored or unusual breathing, marked weakness, collapse, or persistent distress. These signs require professional assessment rather than more water exposure at home.
A practical decision guide
| Situation | Recommended response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Cat voluntarily taps a shallow dish and remains relaxed | Allow brief play while you watch; provide a clear exit. | Voluntary, shallow contact is the lowest-risk form of exploration. |
| Cat tries to leave, hides, or shows distress | Stop and let it retreat; do not repeat the exposure. | Individual preference overrides breed reputation. |
| Cat enters a tub or pool and begins swimming | Stay within arm’s reach and guide it to a safe exit. | Swimming can become dangerous without warning. |
| Bath is needed for contamination or veterinary treatment | Use cat-safe products, lukewarm shallow water, and a short session; seek help when restraint is unsafe. | Some substances and products can irritate skin or pose ingestion risks. |
| Cat needs routine hydration | Provide fresh water in a bowl or optional fountain at all times. | Play does not satisfy drinking needs. |
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
TICA and the Savannah Cat Association support the observation that water interest is common among Savannahs. Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article emphasizes that the tendency is anecdotal and that personality and experience matter. Cornell’s guidance addresses hydration for cats generally, not a special Savannah requirement.

No controlled study or reliable numerical estimate establishes the percentage of Savannahs that like water. There is also no source-backed swimming protocol that proves a particular training method, life vest, pool barrier, or fountain works for every Savannah. The safest conclusion is therefore specific but limited: many Savannahs may enjoy voluntary water play, some will not, and any deep-water contact must be supervised.
