CDC reported 37 domestically acquired animal cases through July 31, concentrated in Texas and New Mexico, and no locally acquired human infestations. For pet owners, the immediate risk remains very low—but a rapidly worsening, foul-smelling wound with maggots needs urgent veterinary attention.
What screwworms are
“Screwworm” is the common name for the larval stage of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. It is not an intestinal worm and does not spread through food.

Unlike ordinary blowfly maggots, which generally consume dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. Dogs and cats can be affected, as can livestock, horses, wildlife, birds, and people.
A female fly is attracted to an opening in the skin or a body opening. That can be a large injury, but it can also be a small scratch, tick or insect bite, surgical incision, or healing wound. Eyes, ears, noses, mouths, genitals, and the umbilicus of newborn animals are particularly vulnerable.

According to the CDC overview, a female can lay 200 to 300 eggs at one time and as many as 3,000 during her 10- to 30-day life. Eggs hatch into larvae, which burrow into the wound and feed for about seven days. Mature larvae then drop into soil, pupate, and emerge as adult flies after roughly 7 to 54 days, depending on temperature and humidity.
Why an infestation can become serious quickly
The larvae have sharp mouth hooks that tear living tissue. As they feed, a small wound can become deeper, larger, painful, swollen, and prone to bleeding. A foul odor and secondary bacterial infection may follow. Without treatment, a severe infestation can kill an animal.
That does not mean every maggot-filled wound is screwworm. Several fly species can cause myiasis, and their larvae may look similar. A veterinary examination and laboratory identification may be needed; the appearance of maggots alone cannot confirm the species, as the CDC’s DPDx guidance explains.

Contact a veterinarian immediately if your dog, cat, or other pet has any of the following:
- a wound that is getting larger or deeper over hours or days;
- visible maggots or eggs in a wound, eye, ear, nose, mouth, or other body opening;
- a strong foul smell;
- bleeding, swelling, marked pain, or unusual sensitivity around an injury;
- a sensation that something is moving in the wound or body opening;
- lethargy, weakness, fever, loss of appetite, or other signs of systemic illness; or
- a wound after surgery, a fight, an accident, or a bite that is not healing normally.
Pets can hide pain, and thick fur can conceal a small wound. Check animals after roaming outdoors, hunting, fighting, or spending time around livestock—especially in areas where animal cases have been reported.
What to do if you suspect screwworm
- Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Tell the clinic that you are concerned about possible New World screwworm and describe where the animal has been, the wound’s location, and how quickly it changed.
- Keep the pet away from other animals. Use a carrier or leash as appropriate, and prevent licking or scratching if you can do so safely. Do not delay veterinary care while trying home remedies.
- Do not pull out larvae yourself. CDC advises people not to remove suspected larvae on their own. Deep or hidden larvae may be missed, and handling the wound can cause additional injury or contamination.
- Do not release live maggots outdoors or throw them in the trash. A veterinarian or public-health or animal-health authority can advise how specimens and contaminated material should be handled.
- Follow reporting instructions. The veterinarian may contact state animal-health or public-health officials and arrange identification of larvae if screwworm is suspected.
Do not apply insecticide, disinfectant, motor oil, essential oils, or human medication to the wound unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. These products can burn tissue, poison pets, or obscure the signs a clinician needs to evaluate.
How likely is this to affect a U.S. pet?
CDC says the current risk to people and animals in the United States is very low. Through July 31, 2026, the 37 domestically acquired animal cases reported by CDC were concentrated in Texas and New Mexico. The USDA confirmed-detections dashboard tracks cases by county, species, confirmation date, and whether mitigation remains active.
An individual animal being marked “inactive” does not necessarily mean the surrounding area is free of risk. The dashboard distinguishes the status of the animal from the status of the infested zone.
Risk is more relevant for pets that spend substantial time outdoors, travel with their owners, roam near livestock, or have untreated wounds. Keeping a pet indoors all the time is not required by current guidance, but prompt wound care and sensible monitoring matter.
What pet owners can do now
| Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Inspect outdoor pets regularly | Small wounds can be hidden under fur or overlooked on the ears, face, paws, and underside. |
| Arrange veterinary care for bites and injuries | Any open wound can attract flies, even if it initially looks minor. |
| Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current | General preventive care reduces avoidable illness and helps owners notice changes sooner; it does not specifically prevent screwworm. |
| Follow travel and movement rules | Quarantines and animal-movement controls may change as authorities respond to detections. |
| Check official updates | Use the CDC outbreak summary and USDA confirmed-detections dashboard rather than social-media posts or old articles. |
There is no general over-the-counter screwworm treatment that pet owners should use on their own. On April 27, 2026, FDA issued an emergency authorization for Negasunt Powder to prevent and treat infestations in cattle, swine, goats, sheep, horses, donkeys, mules, and captive wild, exotic, and zoo mammals. It is an emergency-use product—not a routine, general-purpose remedy for pets or people. A veterinarian must determine whether it is appropriate and how it should be used, according to the USDA/FDA authorization notice.
How authorities are responding
The United States previously eliminated New World screwworm from the country and much of Central America using the sterile insect technique. Facilities produce sterile male flies and release them so that wild females mate without producing viable offspring. Females mate only once, which makes this approach particularly effective, according to the CDC clinical overview.
The current response includes sterile-fly releases, trapping, surveillance, wildlife monitoring, quarantines, animal-movement controls, treatment supplies, and research into lures, diagnostics, therapeutics, sterilization, and ecological modeling. After the first Texas detection, USDA said it was releasing 2 million sterile flies twice a week over the affected area and shipping another 4 million per week for ground deployment. Those figures, reported in the USDA response notice, may change as the response expands.

The outbreak moved north after screwworm reappeared in Panama and Costa Rica in 2023. By July 31, 2026, Mexico and Central American countries had reported more than 189,000 animal cases and 2,360 human cases, according to the CDC outbreak summary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Can people or pets get screwworm from meat?
No. Screwworm does not infest meat or spread by eating beef or other food. Animals entering commerce are subject to inspection, and USDA says affected animals would be detected through that system.
The concern is direct infestation of an open wound or body opening by a female fly. Pets do not catch screwworm by sharing a food bowl, sleeping beside an infected animal, or eating properly handled meat. The life cycle involves flies, wounds, larvae, soil, and adult flies—not contaminated food.
Could a person get screwworm from a pet?
Human infestation is possible, but the current U.S. risk is very low. As of July 31, 2026, CDC had reported no locally acquired human infestations in the United States. One U.S. human case, reported in August 2025, was associated with travel to El Salvador and was not evidence of local transmission, according to the CDC outbreak summary.
Anyone with a painful wound that worsens rapidly, smells foul, bleeds, contains visible maggots, or feels as though something is moving inside it should seek medical care immediately. People should not try to remove suspected larvae themselves.
What the headline gets wrong
The phrase “screwworms are coming” is outdated: they have already been detected in U.S. animals. But that correction should not be confused with a widespread threat to pets or people. CDC’s current assessment is that the risk remains very low, and animal-health authorities are tracking and responding to reported U.S. cases.
The useful takeaway for pet owners is practical rather than sensational: inspect wounds, get veterinary care quickly, and use official state, USDA, and CDC updates when assessing local risk.

FAQ
Can dogs and cats get New World screwworm?
Yes. Dogs and cats are among the warm-blooded animals that can be infested, particularly when they have an open wound or spend time outdoors. The current U.S. risk is very low, but a rapidly worsening or foul-smelling wound needs urgent veterinary attention.
What do screwworm larvae look like?
They are pale larvae that may be found deep in a wound or body opening, but they can resemble larvae from other fly species. Appearance alone cannot confirm New World screwworm; veterinary examination and laboratory identification may be needed.
Should I remove maggots from my pet’s wound at home?
No. Do not try to remove suspected screwworm larvae yourself or apply household chemicals, insecticides, essential oils, or human medicines. Contact a veterinarian immediately so the wound can be examined, cleaned, treated, and reported if necessary.
Can my pet catch screwworm by eating contaminated meat?
No. Screwworm does not infest meat or spread through eating beef or other food. Infestation occurs when a fly lays eggs in an open wound or body opening.

The Bottom Line
New World screwworm has been detected in U.S. animals, but CDC says the current risk to pets and people remains very low. The warning sign that matters is a wound that worsens quickly, smells foul, bleeds, or contains maggots. Do not attempt home removal: contact a veterinarian immediately and check the USDA dashboard for current local detections.
