Sea Bunny Explained: What *Jorunna parva* Is and What “Toxic” Really Means

Sea bunnies are tiny dorid nudibranchs, not rabbits. Their ear-like rhinophores sense chemicals, the rear plume is a gill, and sponge-derived defensive compounds explain “toxic”—without establishing a human poisoning hazard.

Jorunna parva, commonly called the sea bunny, is a tiny marine slug—not a rabbit, mammal, or furry pet. Its rabbit-like “ears” are rhinophores that sense chemicals in seawater, and the fluffy-looking rear structure is a gill plume. The species can obtain defensive compounds from the sponges it eats, which explains the word “toxic” in many descriptions. However, the available species accounts do not establish a human poisoning route, dose, or demonstrated risk from touching one.

The safest interpretation is therefore precise: sea bunnies are real nudibranchs with chemical defenses, but “toxic” should not be converted into either “dangerous to people” or “proven harmless.” Observe wild individuals without handling them, and treat any exposure concern as a local medical question rather than relying on internet labels.

What is a sea bunny?

A sea bunny is the common name for Jorunna parva, a dorid nudibranch in the marine gastropod molluscs. Nudibranchs are sea slugs: shell-less molluscs whose bodies display the sensory and respiratory structures that a shell would otherwise conceal. The family listed for J. parva is Discodorididae.

The nickname describes appearance, not classification. A sea bunny has no rabbit anatomy, fur, ears, or mammalian body plan. It is a soft-bodied ocean invertebrate that crawls over the seafloor and feeds on marine organisms, including sponges. The viral-looking silhouette is a case of functional anatomy being mistaken for a cartoon animal.

Why does it look like a rabbit?

The “ears” are rhinophores

The two upright structures on the head are rhinophores. They are sensory organs that detect chemicals in the surrounding water, helping the slug locate food and interpret its environment. Their shape and position make them look like rabbit ears, but they do not hear sounds in the mammalian sense.

The “tail” is a gill plume

The tuft at the rear is a branchial, or gill, plume. It performs respiratory work by exposing tissue to seawater. The plume can look like a cotton tail in close photographs, yet it is part of the slug’s breathing apparatus rather than a decorative appendage.

The surface is textured tissue, not fur

Sea-bunny photographs often show a plush, dotted or fuzzy texture. That texture comes from small body projections and the animal’s soft skin. MBRIS describes projections on the body that can detect chemicals, adding to the impression of a miniature furry creature. Nothing on the animal is mammalian hair.

Color is variable

White is only one reported appearance. The MBRIS species account lists white, yellow, blue and green forms and notes that differently colored populations might eventually prove to represent separate species. Color alone is therefore a poor identification test, especially in a photograph with unusual lighting or color correction.

Are sea bunnies poisonous?

“Toxic” is a qualified description of the species’ chemical defense, not a documented human-safety verdict. MBRIS says J. parva obtains toxic compounds from the sponges it eats. The Cousteau Society likewise describes sponge-derived substances as a defense against predators. In other words, the slug can acquire chemicals made or concentrated by its prey and retain them in its own body.

What has not been established

The institutional accounts available for this species do not provide a human poisoning case, measured dose, confirmed route of exposure, or clinical guidance. They therefore cannot support a statement that a sea bunny will poison a person, nor a guarantee that handling one is risk-free. Toxicity can depend on the compound, concentration, route and individual sensitivity; none of those human-exposure details is established here.

Do not confuse two nudibranch defenses

Some aeolid nudibranchs steal nematocysts—the stinging-cell organelles of cnidarian prey such as jellyfish—and reuse them for defense. The Natural History Museum discusses that mechanism as a general nudibranch example. It is different from the sponge-derived chemical defense described for J. parva. A sea bunny should not be described as carrying stolen jellyfish stingers unless evidence for that particular species is provided.

How small is a sea bunny, and how long does it live?

MBRIS describes an adult body length of about 1–2 cm. The Natural History Museum gives an approximate size of 1 cm, which fits within that range and reflects the difficulty of estimating a soft animal that changes shape while crawling. These are descriptive figures, not a promise that every individual reaches the same length.

The Cousteau Society gives a lifespan of a few months to about one year. That is a broad natural-history estimate rather than a guaranteed age for an aquarium specimen. MBRIS identifies the species as hermaphroditic, meaning an individual has both male and female reproductive functions. The account does not establish a fixed breeding season or a particular mating outcome, so those details should not be inferred from the common name or from a single photograph.

Where are sea bunnies found?

MBRIS lists an Indo-Pacific distribution that includes Japan, the Philippines and the Indian Ocean. It also records Korean locations around Ulleungdo, Baekdo and Jeju. This is a list of reported distribution areas, not a claim that every suitable reef or shore in those regions contains the species.

A separate view comes from JAMSTEC’s BISMaL occurrence database. Its records cover depths from 0.5 to 30 m and include 196 records through 26 June 2026; the page was last modified on 17 September 2026. The listed coordinates span latitude −33.84006 to 43.30259 and longitude 115.59651 to 151.25333. JAMSTEC says the observations come from a photographically vouchered SEASLUG.WORLD dataset.

Those numbers describe the coverage of that database, not the slug’s absolute biological depth limit, total population or complete global range. A record at 30 m shows that an observation was documented there; it does not prove that the species cannot occur deeper. Likewise, 196 database entries are observations, not a census.

What does a sea bunny eat?

The species accounts identify sponges as prey. Feeding on sponges explains two features at once: the slug’s sensory equipment helps it locate chemical cues in seawater, and compounds from the prey can contribute to its defensive chemistry. “Toxic” in this context describes an ecological interaction between a nudibranch, its food and predators—not a tested consumer-safety label.

The rhinophores and other chemical-sensing projections are therefore practical tools. They help a slug find suitable food on a complex seafloor, while the rear gill plume handles gas exchange. The same structures that create the rabbit-like outline are ordinary organs performing ordinary nudibranch functions.

Can you touch a sea bunny?

Do not handle one for a photograph or attempt to collect it. The available accounts neither demonstrate a human hazard nor establish harmlessness, and picking up a soft-bodied marine slug can injure the animal or remove protective mucus. Non-interference is the responsible choice even when a particular species’ medical risk is uncertain.

Watch from the water or shoreline without moving the animal, keep fins and equipment clear, and photograph it in place. If accidental contact is followed by concerning symptoms, seek local medical advice and report the location, date and animal description. That is general wildlife and exposure guidance, not evidence that J. parva is known to poison people.

How to identify a sea bunny responsibly

A common-name label in a social-media caption is weaker evidence than a documented observation. For a useful identification record, capture the features and context that allow another observer to check the claim.

  1. Record the date and location. Include the country or island and, when possible, a precise site.
  2. Photograph the whole animal. Show the paired rhinophores, rear gill plume, body texture and coloration rather than relying on a cropped “face” image.
  3. Note depth. A depth reading is more informative than “near shore,” especially because documented records span 0.5–30 m.
  4. Separate observation from identification. Write “possible Jorunna parva” when a specialist confirmation is unavailable; do not treat every small white nudibranch as a sea bunny.
  5. Preserve the original image and metadata. A photographically vouchered record can be checked later, while an edited image or unsourced common-name repost cannot.

JAMSTEC’s BISMaL records illustrate the useful evidence fields: coordinates, date, depth and a photographic voucher. Those fields help distinguish a verifiable sighting from an informal label.

Common misconceptions, corrected

“It is a baby rabbit that swims.”

No. The animal is a marine gastropod mollusc and a dorid nudibranch. Its resemblance to a rabbit is visual and functional, not evolutionary kinship with mammals.

“The ears are ears and the tail is a tail.”

The front pair are rhinophores used for chemical sensing. The rear plume is a gill. Calling them ears and a tail is a nickname-based shortcut, not an anatomical description.

“Every sea bunny is white.”

Reported forms include white, yellow, blue and green. MBRIS also notes uncertainty about whether some color populations may represent distinct species, so color should not be used alone.

“Toxic means it is proven dangerous to touch.”

The documented claim is that defensive compounds are acquired from eaten sponges. No human exposure route, dose or poisoning case is supplied for this species. That evidence is insufficient for either a danger claim or a blanket safety guarantee.

“Thirty metres is its maximum depth.”

Thirty metres is the deepest occurrence represented in the cited JAMSTEC dataset. It is not an experimentally established depth limit.

“There are 196 sea bunnies in the wild.”

The figure is the number of occurrence records in that database through the stated date. Records measure documented observations, not abundance.

Why this tiny slug matters

Sea bunnies show how much information can be packed into a small marine invertebrate. The structures that create an internet-friendly face are sensory and respiratory organs; the food relationship with sponges is tied to chemical defense; and the range picture improves when observations include coordinates, dates, depth and photographs. The species also demonstrates why a vivid common name should be paired with a scientific name before claims about behavior, toxicity or distribution are shared.

The most accurate summary is simple: Jorunna parva is a 1–2 cm Indo-Pacific dorid nudibranch with rabbit-like rhinophores, a gill plume that resembles a tail, variable reported colors and a sponge-linked chemical defense. It is real, remarkably small and worth observing—but the word “toxic” does not, by itself, establish a human poisoning risk.
