Seasonal Hazards for Pets: Prevent Fall and Winter Emergencies

A practical ASPCA-based guide to seasonal hazards for dogs and cats, including rodent poison, antifreeze, mushrooms, snakes, icy walks, cold exposure and holiday dangers.

Fall and winter bring a predictable set of risks for dogs and cats: rodent poison, automotive coolant, wild mushrooms, venomous snakes, icy walks, cold exposure and holiday decorations or foods. Prevention is straightforward—store toxins behind secure doors, supervise outdoor time, keep dogs leashed where snakes or ice are present, clean paws after walks and make holiday items inaccessible. If a pet may have swallowed a toxin, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately; the service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and a consultation fee may apply.

Why seasonal hazards deserve a separate plan

Changes in weather and household routines alter what pets can reach. Open garages expose animals to vehicle fluids and pest-control products. Fallen leaves and damp soil can hide mushrooms. Shorter days and cooler temperatures increase time around heaters, candles and holiday decorations. Snow, ice and road treatments add hazards to every walk. A prevention plan works best when it follows those changes rather than treating autumn and winter as ordinary days.

The guidance below applies to companion animals generally, but an individual pet’s age, medical history, size and species affect the seriousness of an exposure. A veterinarian can provide animal-specific advice, especially for puppies, kittens, senior pets and animals with kidney, liver or respiratory disease.

Secure toxins in the home, garage and yard

Rodenticides

Rodent poisons can be highly toxic to pets. Use extreme caution and keep every bait, package and contaminated object completely inaccessible. A bait station is not proof that a poison is safe: a dog or cat may move it, break it open or find a poisoned rodent. Store products in a locked cabinet, not on a garage shelf or beneath a sink, and remove dead rodents with gloves so pets cannot eat them.

Keep the product packaging if an exposure occurs. The active ingredient and concentration help a veterinarian or poison specialist select the right treatment, and the amount missing may determine whether urgent care is needed.

Automotive coolant and antifreeze

Ethylene glycol coolant is highly toxic, and even a small spill can attract pets because of its sweet taste. Check vehicles for leaks, place containers in a locked area and clean drips immediately with an absorbent material. Do not leave a drain pan where an animal can reach it. Dispose of contaminated rags and absorbent material securely.

Propylene glycol coolant is less toxic than ethylene glycol, but “less toxic” does not mean harmless. Prevent access to every coolant product and treat any ingestion as urgent.

School supplies and seasonal storage

Autumn routines often put school supplies on floors, tables and in backpacks. ASPCA lists school supplies among seasonal hazards. Keep supplies, art materials and lunch containers closed and stored where pets cannot chew or swallow them. Do not let a pet investigate an open backpack, classroom project or craft area.

What to do after suspected poisoning

Do not wait for symptoms. Signs can be delayed even when serious damage is developing. Remove the pet from the area, identify what may have been eaten, estimate the amount and note the time. Do not induce vomiting or give food, milk or medication unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you.

Call a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. ASPCA states that Poison Control is open 24/7, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Have the product label, your pet’s weight and any symptoms ready. If the animal is unconscious, having trouble breathing, collapsing or seizing, go directly to an emergency veterinary hospital while calling ahead.

Keep pets away from wild mushrooms

Wild mushrooms can appear in lawns, parks, mulch and wooded trails after rain. Dangerous varieties are difficult for an untrained person to distinguish from harmless ones, so visual identification is not a safe strategy. Keep pets out of areas where mushrooms grow, inspect the yard frequently and remove mushrooms with gloves before allowing animals outside.

ASPCA’s 2020 autumn article states that 99% of mushrooms have little or no toxicity and that the 1% that are highly toxic can cause life-threatening problems in pets. That figure is a statement from that dated ASPCA article, not a guarantee that a mushroom found today is safe.

If a pet bites or swallows a mushroom, treat it as a possible poisoning. Save a sample in a paper bag if you can do so without delaying help, photograph the growth and call a veterinarian or Poison Control immediately. Do not wait to see whether vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors or other signs develop.

Manage snake encounters according to local risk

Know the species and habitat where you live

Venomous snakes vary by region, and their habitats are not the same everywhere. Ask a local veterinarian, wildlife agency or extension service which species occur in your area and where encounters are most likely. Staying on well-worn trails reduces contact with hidden wildlife compared with letting a dog range through tall grass, rock piles or brush.

Choose the right level of control

Approach Control it provides When to discuss it
Leash and active monitoring Immediate control of distance, direction and investigation; lets you steer a dog away from cover or a snake. Default choice on trails and in snake-prone terrain, especially when recall is unreliable.
Snake-avoidance training Can teach a dog to recognize and avoid snakes, but it does not remove the need for supervision or account for every species and situation. Consider with a qualified trainer when off-leash access is contemplated and local snake encounters are a recurring concern.

These options are not interchangeable guarantees. A dog’s training, recall, age and temperament, along with local species and terrain, determine how much protection each provides. ASPCA also mentions a rattlesnake vaccine for dogs in some Western Diamondback areas. Its stated context is that species and region, so ask your veterinarian whether it is appropriate locally and what additional precautions remain necessary.

If a snake bites

A snake bite requires prompt veterinary care. Keep the pet as still and calm as possible, carry a small animal if you can and call the clinic while traveling. Do not cut the wound, suck out venom, apply a tourniquet or spend time on other ineffective home first aid. A photograph from a safe distance can help with identification, but never try to capture or handle the snake.

Protect paws and body from cold, snow and ice

Limit cold exposure

Shorten outdoor time in very cold weather and watch for shivering, weakness, confusion, pale or painful skin and reluctance to walk. Wind, wet fur and freezing temperatures can overwhelm small, thin-coated, young, elderly or ill animals quickly. Provide a dry, warm place indoors and never leave a pet unattended outside in severe cold.

Make every walk safer

  1. Keep dogs leashed on snow or ice. Snow can hide hazards, and an off-leash dog can become lost if a familiar scent trail is covered.
  2. Use paw protectants or booties if your pet tolerates them. Check that footwear fits, does not rub and is removed when the walk ends.
  3. Use pet-friendly ice melt where possible, but do not assume any product is risk-free. Keep containers closed and prevent pets from licking treated surfaces.
  4. After every walk, wipe and dry the paws, including between the toes. Remove clumps of ice, salt and grit before the animal grooms them off.
  5. Clean any antifreeze or coolant spill immediately and keep pets away until the area is safe.

Paw protection and ice melt are supporting measures, not substitutes for limiting exposure and cleaning paws. If pads become cracked, red, swollen or painful, stop the exposure and contact a veterinarian.

Comparing paw-protection choices

Choice Advantages Limits and checks
Paw protectant Quick to apply and leaves the toes uncovered for natural movement. Must be reapplied as directed; a pet may lick it, and it does not prevent contact with all ice-melt chemicals.
Booties Create a physical barrier against snow, ice and treated ground. Require gradual training and a secure, comfortable fit; inspect for rubbing and remove indoors.
No added product Simplest option when walks are brief and routes are clean. Still requires a leash, avoidance of treated areas and thorough paw cleaning afterward.

Reduce holiday-season dangers

Holiday gatherings add unfamiliar objects, foods and noise. Set up a quiet room where a pet can retreat, and tell visitors not to feed or open doors for the animal without permission.

  • Food and alcohol: Keep risky foods, alcoholic drinks and leftovers off counters and out of trash. Use lidded bins that pets cannot open.
  • Wires and batteries: Secure electrical cords and keep batteries, including button batteries, out of reach. A chewed wire can injure the mouth or cause an electrical shock; a swallowed battery is an emergency.
  • Plants and decorations: Keep toxic plants, tinsel, candles and small ornaments inaccessible. Tinsel and string can cause a dangerous intestinal obstruction if swallowed.
  • Trees and tree water: Anchor an unsecured tree so it cannot fall. Prevent pets from drinking tree water, which may contain additives or contaminants, and keep electrical connections away from curious mouths.
  • Snow globes: Some contain ethylene glycol. Store them securely and clean broken glass and liquid without allowing pets into the area.
  • Ice melt and medicines: Keep de-icers and all human or veterinary medications in closed cabinets. Guests may leave pills in purses, coat pockets or bedside tables within reach.
  • Noise and visitors: Fireworks, parties and unfamiliar people can trigger panic or escape attempts. Close windows and doors, check identification tags and microchip details, and provide a familiar hiding place.

Inspect the floor after gifts are opened and meals are served. Ribbon, packaging, bones and food scraps can move from a table to a pet’s mouth in seconds.

A practical seasonal safety routine

Before the first cold snap

  • Walk through the garage, shed and utility area; lock up rodenticides, coolant, ice melt and medications.
  • Check vehicles for leaks and clean any spill before animals enter the area.
  • Survey the yard and remove mushrooms, discarded school supplies and damaged containers.
  • Ask your veterinarian which snakes occur locally and whether avoidance training or a region-specific rattlesnake vaccine merits discussion.
  • Prepare a leash, towel, paw-cleaning supplies and your veterinarian’s emergency number.

Before each outdoor outing

  • Choose a maintained route rather than tall grass, brush or rock piles in snake-prone areas.
  • Use a leash, monitor what your pet investigates and keep the outing short enough for the weather.
  • Check paws and coat when you return, removing ice, grit and plant material.

Before guests arrive

  • Move food, drinks, decorations, batteries, medication and trash behind a closed door.
  • Anchor the tree, cover wires and block access to tree water and snow globes.
  • Set up a quiet, secure room and make sure doors, gates and identification information are ready.

When a seasonal incident happens

Act on the exposure, not on the absence of symptoms. For suspected ingestion of rodenticide, coolant, mushroom, ice melt, medication, holiday food or another unknown substance, call a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately. For a snake bite, seek emergency veterinary care without attempting home treatment. Bring packaging or a photograph when safe, record the time and estimated amount, and follow the professional’s instructions exactly.

Seasonal prevention is a series of small controls: locked storage, supervised walks, clean paws, secured decorations and a ready emergency number. Those steps remove the most common opportunities for a frightening autumn or winter emergency.
