One U.S. shelter lists $35 for cats age 8 and older, while another lists $25 for cats age 10 and older; a New York City adoption center describes a suggested $150 contribution. Treat these as local examples, not a national price. Before you commit, obtain an itemized fee, dated medical and behavior records, a list of completed and pending care, and the shelter’s post-adoption terms.
Plan for a secure carrier on adoption day and a veterinary appointment soon after arrival. The veterinarian can verify the records, establish a baseline, and decide which examination or tests fit that individual cat.

What makes senior-cat adoption different?
“Senior” is not a diagnosis. Older cats may be healthy, playful and settled, yet age-related conditions can be subtle because cats often hide pain and illness. Adoption decisions therefore depend on the particular cat’s history, current observations, home fit and likely follow-up care—not age alone.
Age estimates can also be approximate. Ask how the shelter estimated the cat’s age and how confident it is. A cat’s documented history may come from a previous guardian, a foster caregiver or shelter staff, and each source may have observed different parts of the cat’s routine.
#1 Best Overall
- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
Use the adoption process to answer three practical questions:
- What care has already been completed and documented?
- What care, monitoring or treatment is still due?
- Can your household provide the time, budget and accessibility the cat needs?
How much does it cost to adopt a senior cat?
Fees and inclusions are set locally. Shelters use different age cutoffs, prices and bundles, and fees can change. The following published examples illustrate the variation; they are not a national range or average.
| Organization and location | Published senior-cat fee | Age definition or terms | What the source says is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County | $35 | Cats aged 8 years and older | Wellness examination, spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccines and microchip registration |
| Humane Society of Sumter County | $25 | Cats aged 10 years and older | Its fee explanation says fees help cover vaccinations, spay/neuter and other treatment; the specific cat’s completed care should be confirmed |
| ASPCA Adoption Center, New York City | Suggested $150 contribution | Suggested contribution rather than a universal mandatory fee | Confirm the individual animal’s services and terms with the center |
Another shelter, the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, lists a broader cat-adoption package that includes spay/neuter, FIV/FeLV testing, age-appropriate vaccines, parasite treatment, microchip registration and a free office visit at a named local veterinary hospital. That example shows why the fee alone is not enough: two cats with the same age can leave different organizations with different amounts of care completed.

Build a useful budget
Ask for the total due at adoption and separate one-time costs from care that may recur. Include the adoption fee, required transport supplies, the first independent veterinary visit and any treatment the shelter identifies as pending. Do not assume a fee covers dental work, chronic-condition treatment, medication refills or every future visit.
- Which vaccines, tests, parasite treatments and procedures were completed, and on what dates?
- Are dental procedures, rechecks, medications or other treatments pending?
- Is a first veterinary examination free or discounted? If so, what deadline, provider, exclusions and paperwork apply?
- Does the organization offer a health guarantee, return policy or post-adoption support? Ask for the conditions in writing.
- Can a local veterinary practice estimate near-term costs from this cat’s records rather than from a generic senior-cat figure?
What medical records should you request?
Request the veterinary chart or a clear written summary before signing, and keep a copy for your veterinarian. Confirm dates and results rather than accepting “up to date” as a complete answer.
- Physical examinations and recorded weight or body-condition findings
- Vaccines, including product and administration date when available
- FIV/FeLV or other test results and the date of testing
- Spay/neuter status and surgical records
- Parasite testing and treatments
- Diagnoses, dental findings, procedures and imaging, if any
- Current and recently stopped medications, doses and refill instructions
- Known allergies, adverse reactions or dietary restrictions
- Unknown history and any records the shelter could not obtain
Ask specifically about appetite, weight trend, drinking and urination, grooming, mobility, litter-box use and observed pain. Changes in jumping, stair use, entering a high-sided box, vocalizing or social interaction can be important clues even when a cat appears calm.

Which health checks does a senior cat need?
At the first post-adoption visit, the veterinarian should review the shelter records and examine the cat in context. FelineVMA senior-cat guidance describes assessment of weight and body condition, mouth and teeth, eyes, ears, thyroid, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, muscles, lymph nodes, blood pressure and skin or coat.
Recommended Free Tools
The same material describes blood and urine testing as tools that can discover or monitor problems. Testing should be chosen by the veterinarian for the individual cat; not every cat needs the same panel or frequency.
Recommended visit intervals
FelineVMA’s 2021 senior-care guidance recommends examinations at least every six months for cats ages 10–15 and every four months for healthy cats over 15. Cats with chronic conditions may need more frequent evaluations. These are guideline intervals, not a diagnosis or a substitute for a plan tailored to your cat.

Dental and mobility questions
Dental disease can affect eating and comfort, so ask what the shelter saw in the mouth and whether a dental procedure was recommended. Mobility deserves equal attention. A FelineVMA brochure notes that studies have found degenerative joint disease in 92% of cats; that population finding does not diagnose your cat. Your veterinarian can assess gait, joints, muscle condition and pain and discuss treatment if needed.
Do not interpret a shelter wellness exam as proof that no condition exists. It is a useful snapshot taken under shelter conditions. Follow-up establishes a baseline and identifies changes that may otherwise be easy to miss.

History and daily routine
- What is known about the cat’s previous home, routine, diet and relationships with people or animals?
- How long has the cat been in your care?
- Which observations come from a prior caregiver, a foster home or shelter staff?
- What food, litter and feeding schedule does the cat use now?
- Can I take home enough of the current food for a gradual transition?
Current behavior and function
- What are the current appetite, weight trend, drinking and urination habits?
- How does the cat move, jump, use stairs, groom and sleep?
- Does the cat enter the existing litter box comfortably and use it reliably?
- Have you noticed changes in vocalizing, hiding, interaction or tolerance of handling?
- How does the cat respond to other cats, dogs, children and ordinary household noise?
Care still due
- What medical conditions, medications, dental findings, tests or procedures are known?
- What remains to be done, who is responsible for arranging it, and by what date?
- Can I have copies of all records, including medication instructions and test results?
- Is there a follow-up examination, health guarantee or post-adoption support, and what exactly does it cover?
- What is the return or rehoming policy if the match is not workable?
Use open-ended questions and describe your household honestly. Conversation-based adoption guidance from the ASPCA emphasizes gathering enough information to become an informed pet guardian; withholding details about other animals, schedule or budget makes a poor match more likely.

How to compare shelters or individual cats
There is no standardized cross-shelter package. Compare the facts that affect your actual commitment:
| Comparison area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Total immediate cost | Adoption fee, required supplies, transport and known near-term treatment |
| Included care | Completed procedures, vaccines, tests, parasite care, microchip and any follow-up visit |
| Record quality | Dated notes, medication list, test results and clearly identified unknowns |
| Ongoing needs | Diagnoses, mobility or dental concerns, medications and recommended monitoring |
| Support and terms | Post-adoption help, guarantee or return policy, deadlines and exclusions |
| Practical match | Observed behavior, daily routine, household members and home accessibility |
Transport the cat safely
Bring or arrange a secure carrier before pickup and confirm the shelter’s rules. The ASPCA’s New York City center requires cats to leave in a secure carrier, recommends that adopters bring one and describes a local purchase or rental option. The Tacoma shelter also recommends bringing a carrier.
- Place an absorbent towel or washable blanket in the carrier.
- Secure the carrier in the vehicle so it cannot slide or tip; never transport the cat loose.
- Keep the carrier closed during the journey and avoid unnecessary stops.
- Take the cat directly to the prepared room at home, then open the carrier and let the cat exit at its own pace.
Prepare the home without overspending
Start with what the cat already uses and the challenges the shelter has observed. A quiet transition room with food, water, litter, a resting place and hiding options is usually more useful than buying every age-related product at once.

FelineVMA client guidance suggests steps or ramps to favorite places and a lower-entry litter box for cats that struggle with high sides. Place food, water, resting areas and litter where the cat can reach them without unnecessary stairs. These are conditional adaptations, not required purchases for every older cat. Add or change equipment after observing movement and discussing pain or mobility with your veterinarian.
First days and follow-up
- Keep the cat in a calm, limited area while it learns the new smells and routine.
- Offer the familiar food initially; change diets gradually unless a veterinarian directs otherwise.
- Record appetite, water intake, urine, stool, mobility and medication administration.
- Arrange the veterinary visit soon after adoption and bring every shelter document.
- Contact the shelter promptly if records conflict, a promised service is missing or the cat develops concerning signs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “senior” predicts illness: age does not establish a diagnosis or temperament.
- Using the fee as the budget: included services and pending care differ by organization.
- Relying on verbal assurances: request dated records and written terms.
- Skipping the independent examination: a shelter check is valuable but cannot replace individualized follow-up.
- Buying accessibility products automatically: assess the cat’s actual movement and home layout first.
- Changing food abruptly: transition gradually and ask the veterinarian about any therapeutic diet.
- Leaving the carrier behind: verify transport requirements before traveling to the shelter.
Bottom line for a responsible adoption decision
A senior cat adoption is well planned when you know the exact fee, what that fee purchased, which records are available, what care remains, and how the cat behaves in everyday situations. Choose a cat whose needs fit your household, transport it in a secure carrier, and schedule a veterinary review soon after adoption. Regular examinations—at least every six months from ages 10–15 and every four months for healthy cats over 15 under FelineVMA guidance—help turn an uncertain history into a manageable care plan.
