Suspected sepsis or septic shock in a cat is an emergency: contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. Sepsis cannot be diagnosed from a symptom list, and septic shock is not something to treat at home. Veterinarians assess whether an infection is causing organ dysfunction and whether circulation and tissue perfusion are impaired.
What sepsis means in cats
Under the 2026 veterinary consensus definition, sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome in which a dysregulated response to infection results in organ dysfunction. An infection alone does not establish sepsis: the veterinary team must identify organ dysfunction in an animal with infection. The definition applies to dogs and cats and was published by Goggs and colleagues in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2026 (consensus definition and clinical criteria).

The consensus does not require systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria to diagnose sepsis in an infected cat. Those criteria should not be treated as a home screening test or as a necessary hurdle before a veterinarian can diagnose sepsis.

How septic shock differs from sepsis
Septic shock is a more severe subset of sepsis. It involves cardiovascular instability and metabolic abnormalities indicating impaired tissue perfusion that persist despite adequate fluid resuscitation. In clinical care, it may appear as hyperlactatemia (elevated blood lactate), persistent low blood pressure, or progressive organ dysfunction. These findings require veterinary assessment; none is a home diagnostic test. The 2026 consensus describes septic shock as a form of sepsis associated with increased mortality (consensus definition of septic shock and prognosis).

Symptoms and warning signs
There is no reliable owner-facing symptom list that confirms sepsis in a cat. The clinical concerns highlighted in the consensus—poor tissue perfusion, hypotension, elevated lactate, and worsening organ dysfunction—need to be interpreted by veterinary professionals. Signs that prompt concern may be nonspecific, and their presence or absence cannot confirm or rule out sepsis.
If your cat has a known or suspected infection and seems seriously unwell, or you are worried that the condition is worsening, contact a veterinarian urgently rather than waiting for a particular symptom pattern. Do not try to measure blood pressure or lactate at home, and do not use a symptom checklist to decide that veterinary care is unnecessary.

Causes and what is not established
Sepsis is associated with infection, but the consensus material does not provide a complete list of feline-specific infection sources or rank causes in cats. It therefore does not support naming one source as the usual cause or using a specific suspected source to diagnose sepsis. The decisive issue is whether an infection is associated with organ dysfunction—not simply whether an infection is present.
How veterinarians assess suspected sepsis
Veterinary assessment focuses on the infected patient’s organ function and overall illness severity. The 2026 consensus recommends measuring physiological parameters that contribute to organ-dysfunction assessment and suggests using a structured illness-severity score, such as APPLE. It also suggests blood cultures to check for bacteria or fungi.

During hospitalization, the consensus suggests serially monitoring vital signs, mentation, blood pressure, and lactate. These repeated measurements help the clinical team assess the cat’s condition over time; a single observation by an owner cannot substitute for this evaluation. The recommendations are for clinical care, not a checklist for diagnosing a cat at home.

A cat with suspected septic shock needs emergency veterinary care. At a high level, care involves clinical stabilization and treating the infection and resulting organ dysfunction. The appropriate decisions depend on the individual cat and veterinary findings. The consensus sources do not establish a detailed feline treatment protocol, medication choice, dose, or sequence for owners to follow, so treatment must be directed by the veterinary team.

The consensus review notes that evidence is less complete for cats than for dogs in some prognosis-related areas and makes only limited recommendations in those areas. It does not support applying dog-derived prognostic figures or conclusions as if they were validated for cats, or giving a single feline mortality estimate.
