Introduce a new dog to a resident cat gradually: start with separate spaces, let them get used to each other’s scent, then move to barrier-protected visual contact and brief supervised meetings. Keep the cat’s food, water, litter and resting places accessible without passing the dog. During early meetings, keep the dog on a lead and let the cat choose whether to approach or leave.
Prepare a safe space for the cat
Before the animals meet, give your cat a dog-free room with food, water, a litter tray, hiding places and somewhere comfortable to rest. The cat should be able to reach these essentials without going near the dog. Where possible, provide a high refuge and a clear route away from the dog.

Use a secure gate or another barrier to separate the animals. Check that the dog cannot push through, get under or reach through it. A buffer area between the animals can add distance if a door or gate alone does not keep them apart.

Introduce them in stages
1. Exchange scents
Let each animal become familiar with the other’s scent before they see one another. Swap bedding or use cloths carrying each animal’s scent. At first, keep the scented item away from the cat’s food, water, litter and hiding places. Repeat the exchange over several days, moving on when both animals seem calm or uninterested in the scent.

2. Let each animal explore separately
Secure one animal in a separate space while the other explores the area the first animal has been using. Then switch. Keep them apart during this stage; the aim is to let each investigate the other’s surroundings without a direct encounter.
3. Allow visual contact through a barrier
Once both animals are comfortable with the earlier steps, let them see each other through a secure barrier. Reward calm behavior, and make sure the dog cannot reach the cat. Keep sessions brief and end them before either animal becomes distressed or overexcited.

4. Try short, supervised meetings
When both animals remain calm at the barrier, try a brief meeting in a controlled space. If possible, have one person manage each animal. Keep the dog on a lead and close enough that it cannot reach the cat at full lead length. Leave the cat a clear escape route, and do not restrain it or force it to approach.
Read their behavior and set the pace
There is no established universal timeline for dog-and-cat introductions. RSPCA Australia advises repeating scent exchanges over a few days and moving forward when both animals are calm and confident; behavior, not a calendar, should determine when to progress. A time range sometimes given for cat-to-cat introductions does not apply to introducing a dog to a cat.

At every stage, look for whether both animals can remain calm, whether the cat can reach its resources and retreat, and whether you can reliably manage the dog. If those conditions are not met, give them more time at the current stage or step back.
Keep supervision in place
Do not leave a dog and cat together unsupervised until you are satisfied they are safe together. This is especially important with a kitten: International Cat Care advises not leaving a dog and kitten alone together until the people responsible are confident the pairing is safe.

A pet gate can help with separation and early visual contact; a well-fitting harness and lead can help manage the dog during initial meetings. These tools support a controlled introduction, but they do not make unsupervised contact safe on their own.

If either animal becomes stressed or agitated, end the session and return to separation or an earlier stage. Do not punish either animal or force an interaction: RSPCA Australia warns that punishment can create a negative association with the other animal and be counterproductive. If progress remains difficult, seek veterinary advice or help from an appropriately trained veterinary behaviorist.
