In a remembrance published March 1, 2023, Castle reflects on adopting him with her husband, Gregory, in 2012, the life they shared, and the suddenness of his loss.
How Shadow joined the Castle family
Julie and Gregory Castle adopted Shadow from Best Friends Mission Hills Adoption Center in 2012, shortly after he arrived from one of Los Angeles’s city shelters. Castle, identified in the original article as CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, recalls a dog whose imposing presence made an immediate impression. Gregory was 6 feet 2 inches tall, yet Shadow was big enough to make even him look small.

Shadow’s size and deep, distinctive bark could be intimidating. Castle remembers that when he escaped the backyard, he could clear a street. But she described him as “all bark and no bite”—her affectionate characterization of her own dog, not a promise about how any dog will behave.

The imposing guard dog had a tender side
At Gregory’s office, Shadow took his post by the entrance and required visitors to pay a “treat toll.” People he knew were welcomed as friends. At home, his protective manner sat alongside warmth and humor: Castle remembers him as devoted to his people, playful with the family, and sweet with the smaller dogs who shared the household.

Some of those dogs, including Ester, Ray-Ray, and Stanley, had health challenges. Castle recalls Shadow as gentle with them. Later, Sunny helped bring out his more spirited side.
A life of hikes, games, and couch time
Shadow was part of the family’s Southern Utah hikes, but his pleasures were not all grand adventures. He chased toys and tennis balls, curled up at home, and enjoyed belly rubs. Castle also remembers tending to his loose fur in what the family called “de-floofing.”

He had a knack for opening doors—and for getting himself stuck in odd places. These small, familiar mishaps are part of Castle’s portrait of a dog who could be both enormous and endearingly ridiculous.
Remembering Shadow after a sudden loss
Castle describes Shadow’s final day as “sudden, tragic, and painful. One day he was bright and lively; the next he was gone.” Her account does not give a cause of death. In his final hours, she felt that Shadow was trying to comfort her and Gregory; she holds that as her memory and interpretation of the moment.

Grief can leave room for regret about what might have been done differently. Castle writes that she did not want regret to overtake the meaning of their life together: “But it would be a disservice to his memory to taint it with regret rather than to remember him for all the joy we shared together.” Her focus is on the years of affection and companionship, not on explaining or resolving the pain of his final day.

Castle’s tribute includes a passage she came across and attributes to Irving Townsend: “We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would have it no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.” The original article does not identify where Townsend first published those words.

She imagines Shadow rejoining Ester, Ray-Ray, and Stanley, using the Rainbow Bridge as part of her own memorial language. Her farewell returns to gratitude: Shadow was a big dog with a big personality, but the measure of him in her story is the joy he brought to the people and animals he loved.
