A shark ADVICE was issued for Jakes Corner near Kalbarri on 16 July 2024 after an injured whale was reported there. Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said the whale was attracting sharks that could come close to shore. The Shire of Northampton closed the beach; SharkSmart reported on 18 July that it had reopened and warning signs had been removed.
Why was there a shark warning at Jakes Corner?
A member of the public reported an injured whale at Jakes Corner at 9:28 am on 16 July 2024. DPIRD issued a shark ADVICE for Kalbarri, in the Shire of Northampton, because the whale could attract sharks toward the coast. The official alert said the animal was likely to continue attracting sharks and could lead them to come close inshore along that stretch of coast: SharkSmart’s alert, issued 16 July 2024.

The Shire closed the beach while authorities monitored the situation. ABC News reported on 17 July that around 50 sharks had been drawn to the whale; that estimate was reported by ABC, not included in the official SharkSmart notice. The report also described three dead or injured whales along the Midwest coast that week, but it did not establish the injured Jakes Corner whale’s species.
Was Jakes Corner beach reopened?
Yes, according to SharkSmart’s update on 18 July 2024. Shire officers inspected the area where the whale had been and advised that it was no longer there. The beach reopened and the Shire removed the shark warning signs. DPIRD still recommended additional caution in its update: SharkSmart’s 18 July 2024 update.

The 16 July notice advised water users to take additional caution in Kalbarri, follow beach closures communicated by local government rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA, and check SharkSmart activity information or Surf Life Saving WA updates. The notice printed Water Police’s number, 9442 8600, for reporting shark sightings. Because that number comes from a historical alert, check current official advice before relying on it today.
