Leopard sharks are the clearest nearshore shark to look for in La Jolla. Hundreds of pregnant females move into shallow San Diego water each summer, and California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reports large summer and fall gatherings in La Jolla Cove. That pattern makes leopard sharks locally salient, but it does not guarantee a sighting on any particular swim.
The “11 sharks” in this headline come from A-Z Animals’ article, published August 27, 2023, and updated July 21, 2025. It is a selected secondary-source list, not a formal regional inventory. More than 11 shark species may pass through the wider San Diego area, and the listed species are not equally likely to appear close to shore.

What sharks are actually common near La Jolla?
For a beachgoer, snorkeler or shore diver, leopard sharks have the strongest local documentation and the most predictable seasonal pattern. Birch Aquarium at Scripps describes them as one of the most commonly observed sharks along the California coast, especially in San Diego. CDFW says they gather in massive numbers each summer and fall in La Jolla Cove, within Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve (SMR), where they shelter in shallow water.
Those gatherings are seasonal aggregations, not a promise that every visit will produce a shark. Water temperature, tides, visibility, disturbance and the animals’ movements all affect what you see. The approximate figure of “hundreds of pregnant females” comes from Birch Aquarium’s 2024 description of their summer migration; it is not a population census or an encounter probability.

La Jolla’s shark habitat is varied. Sandy nearshore bottom, rocky intertidal areas, surfgrass, kelp-associated reefs and submarine canyons sit close together, so a species suited to a shallow sandy flat may be absent from a rocky reef or deep canyon. The same coastline can therefore support locally common animals, occasional visitors and offshore species without making all of them equally visible to swimmers.
The 11 names in the A-Z Animals list
The table below preserves the exact enumeration from A-Z Animals. “Nearshore likelihood” describes how useful each name is to someone looking from a beach or snorkeling area; it is not a population ranking. For seven entries, the reviewed official local sources do not establish a La Jolla encounter rate, so the table identifies that limitation rather than implying routine sightings.
| Shark | Nearshore likelihood for a visitor | Season or depth context | Typical habitat | Strength of local documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leopard shark | Highest of the 11 in shallow La Jolla water, especially seasonally | Large aggregations reported in summer and fall; shallow water | Sandy and protected nearshore areas, including La Jolla Cove | Strong: Birch Aquarium and CDFW |

Species with the clearest San Diego evidence
Leopard shark
Leopard sharks are recognizable by their dark saddle-like markings. Birch Aquarium says hundreds of pregnant females migrate into shallow San Diego waters each summer to give birth, including waters in Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve. CDFW likewise identifies large summer and fall concentrations in La Jolla Cove. These animals are generally described by CDFW as harmless to humans and can grow to about six feet, but that characterization applies to leopard sharks in this location—not automatically to every species in the 11-name list.

Gray smoothhound shark
Birch Aquarium places gray smoothhounds in the eastern Pacific from northern California to the Gulf of California and notes that they are sometimes seen schooling with leopard sharks. Their slender bodies, prominent snouts and blunt teeth fit a diet of shelled mollusks and crustaceans. “Sometimes” is important: the source supports an association with leopard-shark schools, not a reliable chance of seeing one during a particular snorkel.
Swell shark
Swell sharks are small sharks of rocky seafloor in California kelp forests. When threatened, one can bend into a U-shape and inflate its stomach with air or water, making it appear much larger. That defensive behavior and its bottom-dwelling lifestyle make it an interesting reef resident, but not an animal a swimmer should expect to encounter in the open sandy shallows where leopard sharks aggregate.
Horn shark
Horn sharks are small, spotted, bottom-dwelling sharks associated with California’s shallow rocky reefs. Spines on their dorsal fins help distinguish them, and females lay spiral egg cases in rocky crevices. A reef or tide-pool setting is more plausible habitat than a leopard-shark aggregation, yet the available local material does not provide a sighting rate for La Jolla.

What the other seven names mean
Broadnose sevengill, tope (also called soupfin), great white, thresher, shortfin mako, blue and hammerhead sharks appear in A-Z Animals’ selected list. The reviewed CDFW and Birch Aquarium pages do not establish how often any of these seven occur specifically in La Jolla, nor do they support a claim that a snorkeler should expect to see one.

Threshers, makos and blue sharks are commonly discussed in relation to offshore habitat; great whites can pass through coastal waters without being a routine shallow-cove sighting; and the list’s hammerhead entry does not identify a particular hammerhead species or a local encounter pattern. Treat these names as possibilities in the wider regional fauna, not as a checklist for a morning at the beach.
Birch Aquarium’s descriptions also include Pacific angel sharks as Southern California sharks, even though angel sharks are absent from the A-Z Animals 11. That discrepancy demonstrates why the number should not be presented as exhaustive. A regional species list depends on its boundaries, habitat definition and date, while the title’s 11 is simply the count chosen by that article.

When and where to look for leopard sharks
Season
The strongest documented pattern is summer and fall. CDFW places the large La Jolla Cove aggregations in both seasons, while Birch Aquarium describes summer movement by pregnant females into shallow San Diego water. No source here establishes a single “best month,” and conditions can vary from year to year.
Habitat
Focus on shallow, protected water over sandy bottom near La Jolla Cove rather than assuming every reef or canyon is equivalent. The protected area also contains surfgrass, rocky intertidal habitat and reef structure, but those settings support a different mix of animals. Submarine canyons have steep walls and strong currents and are not interchangeable with the calm shallows used by visiting snorkelers.
Activities
CDFW lists snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating and shore-accessible scuba diving as recreation in the protected areas. Visibility, current and your own swimming ability should determine which activity is appropriate. A snorkel set can be practical equipment for someone already choosing to snorkel, but no piece of gear ensures a shark sighting.

Protected-area rules and responsible viewing
Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve and the adjacent San Diego-Scripps Coastal State Marine Conservation Area lie just offshore of UC San Diego. Their boundaries and rules are not interchangeable. CDFW states that no take of any kind is permitted within Matlahuayl SMR. In the adjacent SMCA, the stated recreational exception is limited to specified coastal pelagic species taken by hook and line. Check the current CDFW regulations before fishing, collecting or launching equipment.
- Observe sharks without touching, chasing, feeding or blocking their path.
- Keep a respectful distance and leave room for other swimmers and the animals themselves.
- Do not handle leopard sharks, horn-shark egg cases or any other wildlife.
- Check weather, surf and current conditions; canyon dive sites can have strong currents and steep walls.
- Use legal access points and follow posted reserve and conservation-area notices.
Leopard sharks are generally harmless to humans according to CDFW’s description of the La Jolla aggregation, but wildlife is still unpredictable. Avoid behavior that changes an animal’s movement or encourages close contact, and end the encounter if visibility or conditions deteriorate.
How to interpret a shark report from San Diego
- Identify the habitat first. A shallow sandy cove, rocky reef, kelp forest and offshore canyon imply different candidate species.
- Check the season. Summer and fall support the strongest documented leopard-shark pattern; an unqualified claim about a “year-round” aggregation goes beyond the evidence here.
- Separate a regional record from a La Jolla sighting. A shark reported somewhere in the wider San Diego area is not proof that it is common in the cove.
- Look for diagnostic features. Leopard sharks have saddle-like markings, horn sharks have dorsal spines and spotted bodies, and swell sharks have a distinctive inflation defense.
- Ask how strong the source is. Birch Aquarium and CDFW provide direct local context for several species; the remaining names in the 11 are chiefly supported here by the secondary A-Z Animals enumeration.
Bottom line for visitors
If your goal is to see a shark in La Jolla’s nearshore water, leopard shark habitat and season are the most defensible focus: shallow protected areas, especially during summer and fall, with no guarantee of an encounter. Gray smoothhounds, horn sharks and swell sharks are plausible local residents in appropriate habitats, but each is less predictable for a visitor. The other seven names belong in a broader regional or offshore context unless a current, species-specific local record says otherwise. The “11” is useful as a starting list, not a complete census or a promise that all 11 swim within sight of the beach.
