A Shichon is a small Shih Tzu–Bichon Frise cross that is often affectionate, playful, social, and suited to indoor living. The Shichon is not a standardized breed, however, so adult size, coat, temperament, and grooming needs vary. Owners should plan for frequent coat care, daily companionship, dental maintenance, and heat and eye precautions.
Shichons are sometimes called Zuchons or Teddy Bear dogs, although those labels do not guarantee identical ancestry or traits. The most important practical distinction is that low shedding does not mean low maintenance or allergy-proof.

What is a Shichon?
A Shichon Dog Breed Information and Characteristics guide starts with the essential answer: a Shichon is a small companion cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. The mix is often affectionate, playful, social, and suitable for indoor living, but its appearance, adult size, coat, and behavior are less predictable than those of a standardized breed.

PetMD describes the Shichon as a relatively new mix of the lap-oriented Shih Tzu and playful Bichon Frise. The cross has no strict breed standard, so two Shichon puppies from different litters may mature into noticeably different dogs. Sarah Mouton Dowdy, writing for PetMD in a veterinarian-reviewed profile updated September 27, 2024, explains: “Because of how recent this designer cross is, and because there is no strict breed standard, it can be difficult to say for certain what a Shichon dog’s temperament, appearance, and grooming needs will be.” PetMD’s Shichon health and care profile provides the veterinary-source overview.

Shichon, Zuchon, and Teddy Bear dog are names you may see in listings. “Teddy Bear dog” is a marketing-style nickname rather than a precise breed classification, so the name alone does not prove that a dog has Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parents. A responsible seller should be able to explain the dog’s ancestry and provide appropriate records.
How big does a Shichon get?
A Shichon is generally a small, sturdy dog. PetMD gives approximately 18 pounds as the maximum adult weight, but that figure is an orientation point rather than a formal Shichon size standard. Adult height, weight, build, and growth rate can vary with the size and genetics of both parents.
| Dog | Adult-weight reference | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Shichon | Approximately 18 pounds maximum | PetMD’s 2024 profile estimate; not a guaranteed crossbreed standard |
| Shih Tzu parent | 9–16 pounds | American Kennel Club parent-breed range, not a prediction for every Shichon |
| Bichon Frise parent | 12–18 pounds | American Kennel Club parent-breed range, not a prediction for every Shichon |
According to PetMD’s 2024 Shichon profile, a Shichon may inherit a compact body and a soft, fluffy appearance. The coat may be straight, wavy, curly, or dense, and facial features and colors can differ. A puppy advertised as a guaranteed “teddy bear” cannot reliably be promised to retain one particular look after maturity.

Is a Shichon a good family dog?
A Shichon can be a good family dog for a household that wants an affectionate, interactive small companion and can teach children to handle a small dog gently. Shichons are generally people-oriented, playful, and social, but individual behavior still depends on genetics, early socialization, training, environment, and the quality of interactions with children and other pets.
PetMD describes Shichons as eager to play and generally accepting of a broad range of playmates. The Shih Tzu parent standard also emphasizes a companion temperament. The American Kennel Club’s Official Standard of the Shih Tzu states: “As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.” The statement describes the Shih Tzu standard, not a guarantee about every Shichon.
Adults should supervise young children around a Shichon, particularly because small dogs can be injured by falls, squeezing, chasing, or rough play. A family should choose and reward calm handling rather than assuming a friendly puppy will automatically tolerate every interaction. The same principle applies to cats and other dogs: gradual introductions and supervision are safer than relying on the mix’s reputation.

Shichons can be good apartment dogs because they usually have moderate activity needs and can exercise through short walks, indoor play, brief training sessions, and interactive time. Apartment suitability still depends on the individual dog’s barking, house-training, separation tolerance, access to safe outdoor relief, and ability to settle indoors.

A Shichon is not an independent dog that can routinely be ignored for long periods. Both parent breeds were developed primarily for companionship. Extended isolation may contribute to boredom, barking, anxiety, or unwanted behavior in some dogs. Gradual alone-time training, enrichment toys, predictable routines, and realistic care arrangements matter more than the size of the home.
How much exercise and companionship does a Shichon need?
A Shichon generally needs daily movement and social involvement rather than intense working-dog exercise. A practical starting routine can include a short walk, indoor play, several minutes of reward-based training, and calm time with the household. Adjust the routine for age, health, weather, body condition, and the individual dog’s energy.
Shichons with shorter muzzles or noisy breathing need particular caution during warm weather and vigorous activity. The American Kennel Club notes that Shih Tzus do not tolerate heat well and are not good swimmers because of their heavy coats and short faces. The AKC Shih Tzu profile supports treating heat and water safety as practical concerns rather than afterthoughts.
Do Shichons shed, and are they hypoallergenic?
Shichons often shed relatively little, but Shichons are not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Low shedding means loose hair may remain caught in the coat; it does not mean a dog produces no allergens or that every allergy sufferer will tolerate the dog.
Allergy responses vary between people and individual dogs. Before adopting, an allergy-sensitive household should spend meaningful time with the specific dog, avoid relying on a breed label, and discuss symptoms with an appropriate medical professional. No seller should promise that a Shichon is allergy-proof.
How much grooming does a Shichon need?
A Shichon can require daily brushing, regular bathing, coat trimming, nail care, ear care, and professional grooming. The Shichon’s low-shedding coat can still be high-maintenance because trapped loose hair and a long, curly, or wavy texture can form mats close to the skin.
The American Kennel Club’s Bichon guidance recommends brushing at least two or three times per week, with daily brushing best, and explains that loose hair caught in the undercoat must be brushed out to prevent mats. Many pet owners use a professional groomer every four to six weeks. AKC’s Bichon Frise care guidance supports that maintenance pattern.
AKC’s Shih Tzu guidance describes daily brushing for a long coat, bathing about every three or four weeks, daily combing of the mustache and topknot, and routine nail and ear care. A shorter puppy trim can reduce daily coat work, but a short haircut does not eliminate brushing, skin checks, bathing, or professional maintenance. See AKC’s Shih Tzu coat-grooming guidance for the parent breed’s coat-care principles.

A small-dog slicker brush with flexible pins or a gentle flexible-pin wire brush can be useful for reaching through a Shichon coat, but no brush suits every coat or prevents every mat. Work gently in sections down to the skin, stop if the dog shows discomfort, and ask a groomer to demonstrate technique if mats are already present. A slicker brush for a Shichon is best treated as a routine-care tool, not a substitute for professional grooming.
Never cut out a tight mat with household scissors close to the skin. Mats can hide irritated skin, and accidental cuts are easy when the skin is pulled upward with the hair. A groomer or veterinarian can advise on severe matting.
Are Shichons easy to train?
Shichons are often eager to please, but training is not automatically easy because the dog is small or friendly. Consistent reward-based training, early socialization, and short sessions generally offer the best foundation.
Prioritize house-training on a predictable schedule, calm greetings, basic cues, grooming cooperation, and gradual alone-time practice. Socialize a puppy carefully with people, friendly dogs, surfaces, sounds, handling, and grooming environments. Touch the paws, ears, face, and tail gently while pairing handling with rewards so routine care becomes familiar.
Harsh corrections can damage trust and are specifically discouraged in parent-breed guidance. The American Kennel Club says Shih Tzus respond best to praise and rewards, while its Bichon guidance also supports positive reinforcement: Shih Tzu training guidance and Bichon Frise training guidance. Small size is not a reason to excuse nipping, persistent barking, jumping, or poor manners.
What health problems do Shichons have?
Shichons may face health concerns associated with small dogs and either parent breed, but a breed description cannot predict which conditions an individual dog will develop. Preventive veterinary care, weight control, dental care, observation, and responsible parent screening are more useful than assuming that mixed-breed status removes inherited risk.
| Health priority | What owners should watch for | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Dental disease | Bad breath, visible buildup, mouth discomfort, difficulty eating | Frequent home brushing, veterinary dental examinations, and professional treatment when recommended |
| Patellar luxation | Limping, bunny-hopping, intermittent skipped steps, or a popping sound | Arrange a veterinary examination rather than attempting a home diagnosis |
| Eye problems | Squinting, redness, cloudiness, discharge, rubbing, or sudden vision changes | Seek prompt veterinary assessment, especially for acute symptoms |
| Heat or airway problems | Excessive panting, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, weakness, or collapse | Stop activity, cool the dog safely, and seek immediate veterinary care for heatstroke signs |
Why is dental care especially important?
Small and toy dogs are especially prone to periodontal disease, according to PetMD’s Shichon profile. Daily tooth brushing is an ideal goal when a dog accepts it, while veterinary examinations and professional cleanings remain necessary when dental disease is present. A small-dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste can support a home routine, but a product cannot replace veterinary dental care.

What knee problems can Shichons develop?
Patellar luxation is a concern in smaller dogs, including the Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parent breeds. A dog that intermittently carries a rear leg, bunny-hops, limps, or develops an abnormal gait should be examined by a veterinarian. Persistent limping, pain, or a sudden change in mobility should not be explained away as a harmless small-dog habit.
What eye problems matter in a Shichon?
Shih Tzus are associated with cataracts, dry eye, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and corneal dryness or inflammation; Bichons can also develop cataracts and other eye disease. Large, exposed eyes can be vulnerable to irritation and injury. Squinting, redness, cloudiness, discharge, rubbing, or sudden vision changes warrants veterinary attention. The parent-breed health information is summarized in the AKC Shih Tzu profile and AKC Bichon Frise profile.
Are Shichons at risk from heat or breathing problems?
A Shichon with a shorter muzzle may be less tolerant of heat or strenuous exercise, although not every Shichon has clinically significant airway disease. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals added Shih Tzus to the breeds eligible for Respiratory Function Grading Scheme examinations in April 2026. OFA explains that the scheme evaluates signs associated with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and that inheritance is not fully understood or entirely predictable: OFA respiratory-function screening guidance.
Limit strenuous activity in hot or humid weather, provide shade and water, and never leave a dog in a parked vehicle. American Animal Hospital Association guidance updated May 19, 2026, identifies excessive panting, difficulty breathing, weakness, and collapse as signs requiring immediate veterinary attention. AAHA’s heatstroke-prevention guidance provides the current safety recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long do Shichons live?
Shichon longevity is best described as an approximate expectation rather than a guaranteed lifespan because no standardized Shichon population registry or reliable controlled longevity study was established here. PetMD relates Shichon lifespan to the parent breeds and lists the Shih Tzu at 10–18 years and the Bichon Frise at 14–15 years.
According to the American Kennel Club’s current profiles, the Shih Tzu parent has a listed life expectancy of 10–18 years and the Bichon Frise parent has a listed life expectancy of 14–15 years. Those figures describe the parent breeds, not every Shichon: AKC Shih Tzu life-expectancy information and AKC Bichon Frise life-expectancy information.
What should I ask a Shichon breeder?
A responsible breeder should answer specific questions about the parents, puppy care, health records, socialization, and what happens if the placement fails. A “designer mix” label is not a substitute for evidence or a written commitment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- What are the documented identities and health histories of both parents?
- Can I see veterinary records, vaccination information, and any available orthopedic or eye screening records?
- Have respiratory symptoms, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, or heat intolerance appeared in the Shih Tzu line?
- How have the puppies been socialized with people, handling, sounds, surfaces, dogs, and grooming?
- What adult size and coat type do you expect, and how do you explain the fact that neither is guaranteed?
- Can I meet the mother and, where possible, see the living conditions and the father?
- Will you provide a written contract, health information, and a return policy?
- Will you take responsibility for the dog if the placement fails?
OFA health records and screening resources can help a buyer verify available parent information, but an OFA record does not guarantee that a puppy will be free of every inherited or acquired condition. OFA also notes that respiratory-function screening cannot guarantee unaffected puppies from unaffected parents. Use OFA’s respiratory-function information as one verification resource, not as a complete health guarantee.

Is a Shichon the same as a Zuchon or Teddy Bear dog?
Shichon and Zuchon commonly refer to the same Shih Tzu–Bichon Frise cross, while “Teddy Bear dog” is a broader marketing nickname. A dog sold as a Teddy Bear dog may have different ancestry, so buyers should verify parentage instead of treating the nickname as a breed classification.
Who should and should not get a Shichon?
A Shichon may suit a person or family seeking a small, affectionate indoor companion and willing to provide daily interaction, positive training, regular dental care, and ongoing coat maintenance. Apartment living can work when the dog receives exercise, enrichment, house-training support, and companionship.
A Shichon is a poor fit for a household seeking a dog that can be left alone most of the day, requires almost no grooming, is guaranteed allergy-friendly, or has a predictable adult appearance and temperament. The recurring costs and time commitment include grooming, veterinary care, dental maintenance, parasite prevention, food, training, and emergency care.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Shichon?
A Shichon is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. Shichons are often affectionate, playful, and social, but they are not a standardized breed, so adult size, coat, appearance, and temperament can vary.
Are Shichons hypoallergenic, and do Shichons shed?
Shichons often shed relatively little, but they are not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Loose hair can remain trapped in the coat, and people’s allergy responses vary between individual dogs.
Are Shichons good apartment dogs?
Shichons can be good apartment dogs when they receive daily walks, indoor play, training, enrichment, and human companionship. A Shichon may struggle if routinely left alone for long periods.
How long do Shichons live?
Shichons can live approximately as long as their parent breeds, but there is no reliable standardized Shichon longevity study. AKC lists 10–18 years for Shih Tzus and 14–15 years for Bichon Frises; those figures are parent-breed references, not guarantees for every Shichon.

The Bottom Line
A Shichon can be a loving, apartment-compatible companion, but the mix is not maintenance-free or fully predictable. Choose the individual dog carefully, verify parent health information, plan for frequent coat care and daily companionship, and treat dental, knee, eye, heat, and breathing concerns as preventive priorities rather than guaranteed diagnoses.
