Names such as “teddy bear” and “lion cut” can mean different things from one salon to another, so a picture and a maintenance conversation are more dependable than a label alone.
These four ideas cover the most useful choices: a practical puppy clip, a rounded teddy-bear-style face, a longer coat with a topknot, and a lion-inspired trim. None is automatically right for every Shih Tzu. Your dog’s coat condition, tolerance for brushing, comfort around the eyes, and the time you can devote to appointments should determine the final plan.

Start with the care commitment, not the name of the cut
Shih Tzus have a coat and facial hair that require regular attention. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says the breed needs daily brushing, and longer coats require daily combing of the mustache and topknot. A shorter trim can reduce the amount of coat you have to work through, but it does not eliminate grooming altogether.
Before you select a style, decide how much daily work is realistic in your household. Also consider how much hair you want around the eyes, whether you like a rounded or more flowing face, and how often you can return to a professional. Those three decisions usually matter more than the name printed on a salon menu.

| Decision | What to tell the groomer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily brushing time | State whether you can brush every day and how long a session can reasonably be. | Longer hair needs more frequent brushing and combing to stay manageable. |
| Face and eye hair | Show whether you prefer a rounded plush face, a visible topknot, or short hair on the head. | Head hair can be secured or trimmed short to help keep it out of the eyes. |
| Salon schedule | Tell the groomer how often you can book maintenance. | The practical length is the one you can maintain between visits. |
Ask the groomer to check the coat before agreeing to a final length. A photo shows the intended silhouette, not the exact result your dog’s current coat can produce. The groomer can explain what is comfortable and achievable without promising an identical finish.
1. Puppy clip: the practical, lower-maintenance choice
A puppy clip is a short, even trim designed to make a Shih Tzu’s coat easier to maintain. The AKC describes it as “a shorter haircut that makes a Shih Tzu’s coat easier to maintain.” It is often the clearest option for an owner who likes a tidy outline but does not want to work through a long coat every day.
How to describe it
Do not rely on the words “puppy clip” alone. Bring a photo and point out the approximate body length, how rounded you want the head, and whether you want the ears and tail blended into the body or left visibly longer. You can say, “Please keep the body short and practical, soften the face into this shape, and leave the ears and tail at a length I can brush.” The groomer may recommend a different length after seeing the coat.
Maintenance and scheduling
According to AKC breed guidance, Shih Tzus in a puppy clip typically benefit from professional grooming every four to six weeks. That is a general schedule, not a guarantee for every dog: coat growth, activity, indoor conditions, and the finish you request can change the timing. Continue regular brushing between appointments, especially in areas where harnesses, collars, or movement create tangles.
Who is likely to prefer it
This option suits owners who want a straightforward routine, have limited time for daily detangling, or prefer to keep facial hair relatively short. It is not a promise of zero upkeep. Nails, bathing, brushing, and attention to the face still belong in the dog’s routine.

2. Teddy-bear-style face: a rounded, plush expression
A teddy-bear-style face usually means a soft, rounded outline that makes the head look plush rather than sharply sculpted. “Teddy bear cut” is a salon description, not a fixed AKC specification in the cited guidance. One groomer’s version may leave more hair on the cheeks, while another may create a shorter, neater round.
How to get the shape you mean
Bring a close-up reference photo taken from the front and, if possible, a side view. Point to the cheek width, muzzle fullness, and the amount of hair you want near the eyes. Then specify the body separately: a teddy-bear face can be paired with a short body or a longer coat. Ask the groomer to confirm the approximate length for the muzzle, cheeks, ears, and body before the scissors or clippers come out.

Eye area and comfort
Tell the groomer whether your priority is a full, plush look or keeping hair clearly away from the eyes. The final face may need to be adjusted to your dog’s hair growth and comfort. If the groomer advises taking the head shorter than the photo, ask what daily care that change will require rather than treating the salon label as a technical specification.
Upkeep questions to ask
Because the style has no universal length, ask for a home-care estimate in plain language: how often to brush, which areas tangle first, and when the rounded outline will need reshaping. Write those instructions down or repeat them back before leaving the appointment.
3. Longer coat with a topknot: the signature Shih Tzu look
A longer coat and topknot create the flowing appearance many people associate with the breed. The topknot is also functional: it gathers hair on top of the head so it stays out of the eyes. AKC advises daily care of the topknot and mustache. If you prefer not to maintain a topknot, hair on top of the head can instead be kept short to help avoid eye irritation.

Specify the topknot, not just “long hair”
Show whether you want a small, neat tie or a fuller arrangement, and ask how much hair must remain on the crown to make that possible. Clarify the ear length, the tail shape, and whether the body should stay in an even coat or be lightly shaped. A reference photo communicates the overall balance, but your groomer still needs your preferred lengths for each area.
Plan for daily work
Longer coats require daily brushing, while the mustache and topknot need daily combing. A wire brush with flexible pins is the type of brush AKC specifically recommends for long-coated Shih Tzus. Work gently and methodically rather than pulling through knots. Ask the groomer to demonstrate the tool and technique on your dog before you attempt the full routine at home.
When this look is a poor match
If daily brushing is not realistic, a long coat can become an ongoing source of frustration. Tell the groomer honestly how many days per week you can maintain it. A shorter body with a manageable head, or a short head trim instead of a topknot, may preserve your preferred expression while reducing the amount of coat you must handle.
4. Lion-inspired trim: a mane-like face and shorter body
A lion-inspired trim uses contrast: a fuller, mane-like face with a shorter body. It is a visual preference rather than a standardized recipe. The official sources cited here do not define one universal blade length, mane size, or tail shape for a “lion cut.” Two salons can use the same name and produce noticeably different silhouettes.
Describe the contrast you want
Bring a photo that shows the mane from the front and side. Explain where you want the fuller area to begin and end, how short the body may be, and whether the legs and tail should echo the mane or remain blended. Ask the groomer to mark the proposed transition in words before clipping, because a picture alone cannot establish an exact measurement.

Check suitability before committing
Ask whether your dog’s coat texture and current condition can support the look without uncomfortable dematting or an uneven result. Confirm how quickly the contrast will soften as the body grows and what brushing will be needed to keep the mane tidy. If the groomer recommends a modified version, decide based on comfort and upkeep rather than insisting on a name.
Compare the four ideas before you book
| Look | Visual brief | Hair around the eyes | Daily-care expectation | Professional-maintenance note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy clip | Short, practical body and a neat overall outline. | Usually easier to keep short, subject to your request and the groomer’s assessment. | Lower than a long coat, but regular brushing and routine care remain necessary. | AKC says this clip typically benefits from grooming every four to six weeks. |
| Teddy-bear-style face | Rounded, plush head; body length is chosen separately. | Agree on cheek, muzzle, and eye-area length with a photo. | Depends on the lengths selected; ask for a specific brushing plan. | No universal schedule or technical definition is established by the cited sources. |
| Long coat with topknot | Flowing coat with hair gathered on top of the head. | Topknot keeps head hair out of the eyes; short head hair is an alternative. | Daily brushing plus daily combing of the mustache and topknot. | Book intervals should be set with the groomer around growth and coat condition. |
| Lion-inspired trim | Fuller mane-like face contrasted with a shorter body. | Specify the mane and eye-area outline in the reference photo. | Varies with the mane length and the body contrast you choose. | The cited official sources do not set a standard recipe; confirm the design in advance. |
Use this appointment script
A clear request gives the groomer decisions to work from instead of asking for a label that may be interpreted differently. Adapt this script to your dog:
“Here are two reference photos. Please keep the body about this length, round the face like this, and tell me what daily brushing and return schedule that length will need. For the ears, tail, and head, I would like these approximate lengths. If my dog’s coat or comfort makes that unrealistic, please show me the closest practical option before you start.”
At the appointment, move through the details in this order:

- Separate body and head requests. State the body length first, then the face, ears, tail, and topknot.
- Discuss the eye area. Say whether keeping hair away from the eyes is more important than preserving a fuller look.
- Ask for a maintenance translation. Confirm daily brushing or combing time, tools, and the expected return interval.
- Let the groomer inspect the coat. Ask what can be achieved comfortably with the current length and condition.
- Repeat the agreed plan. Before the service begins, summarize the lengths and shape so both of you have the same picture.
Keep the result comfortable between appointments
Whatever style you choose, make the home routine match the length you approved. Brush on the schedule your groomer gives you, paying attention to friction points and the face. With a longer coat, follow AKC’s daily-care guidance for the mustache and topknot rather than waiting for visible tangles.

Check the topknot tie and surrounding hair gently. If your dog resists, rubs at the eyes, or seems uncomfortable during grooming, stop and ask the groomer to adjust the technique or style. A topknot is meant to keep hair out of the eyes, not to create tension or irritation. Owners who do not want to manage a topknot can discuss a short head trim instead.
At each visit, tell the groomer what worked and what did not: whether brushing was manageable, whether the face stayed clear, and how soon the outline lost its shape. That feedback is more useful than switching between style names without changing the requested lengths.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Requesting only a label. “Teddy bear” and “lion” do not establish one exact cut; pair the term with photos and length requests.
- Showing a photo without discussing upkeep. The pictured coat may require daily work you cannot provide. Ask for the routine before choosing the length.
- Assuming short means maintenance-free. A short clip reduces coat-management work but does not remove brushing, bathing, face care, or professional grooming.
- Ignoring the eye area. Decide explicitly whether you want a topknot or shorter head hair, and explain that priority to the groomer.
- Skipping the coat check. The groomer needs to assess current condition and comfort before promising a particular silhouette.
- Failing to set a return plan. Ask when the chosen length will need reshaping, then book according to the groomer’s estimate rather than a generic salon label.
Choose the look that fits your real routine
Pick the puppy clip when practicality and a shorter maintenance cycle are your main goals. Choose a teddy-bear-style face when the rounded expression matters most and you are prepared to define the exact shape with photos. Keep a longer coat and topknot when you enjoy daily coat care and want the classic gathered head hair. Consider a lion-inspired trim when you like a mane-and-body contrast and are willing to approve a custom interpretation rather than expect a standardized recipe.
The best request is specific, collaborative, and honest about time. Show the groomer the look, describe each body area, ask what the coat can comfortably support, and leave with a clear brushing and appointment plan.
