Winter lowers parasite activity in some places but does not create a reliably risk-free period. Ticks can remain active around 40°F, fleas can survive indoors, and local conditions differ. Your veterinarian can match a labeled product and schedule to your dog’s age, health, exposure, and the parasites in your area.
Why winter is not a guaranteed parasite break
Ticks can be active in cool weather
Cold weather reduces activity for some ticks, but it does not eliminate it everywhere. Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center notes that ticks may be active at temperatures around 40°F. That temperature occurs during winter in many parts of the United States, especially during thaws, sunny days, and stretches of mild weather. A dog can therefore encounter a tick while walking, hiking, playing in a yard, or visiting a wooded area even when the calendar says winter.

Tick activity also differs by species and region. The Companion Animal Parasite Council’s 2026 parasite forecasts describe regional and seasonal variation, including activity during cooler seasons in some areas. A short outdoor parasite season in your town is not the same as zero exposure, and a warm spell can change conditions quickly.
Fleas can live inside your home
Fleas are not dependent on outdoor temperatures once they are in a sheltered indoor environment. Heated homes, floor coverings, furniture, and pet bedding can provide conditions in which flea life stages persist through winter. Cornell explains that an infestation can involve both the dog and the environment, so simply waiting for outdoor cold to kill fleas is unreliable.

A dog that rarely goes outside can still pick up fleas from other animals, shared spaces, visitors, boarding, grooming, or contaminated areas around the home. Indoor living lowers some exposures; it does not make flea exposure impossible.
How your dog’s risk changes by place and lifestyle
The American Veterinary Medical Association describes parasite risk as “may be seasonal or year-round, depending where you live.” That qualification matters. A dog living in a warm, humid region may face substantial flea pressure for most of the year, while a dog in a colder climate may see fewer ticks during deep winter. Neither situation automatically identifies a safe month to stop treatment.
CAPC recommends tailoring prevention to the pet’s needs while accounting for geographic and seasonal differences. Discuss these factors with your veterinarian:

“Low risk” is a reason to individualize a plan, not proof that every winter dose can be skipped. Your veterinarian may consider a different product or interval for a particular dog, but that decision should follow the product label and professional advice.
What fleas and ticks can do
Flea-related problems
Fleas commonly cause itching, chewing, scratching, hair loss, and inflamed skin. Some dogs develop flea allergy dermatitis, an intense allergic reaction to flea saliva that can cause severe irritation even when you see very few fleas. Scratching can damage the skin and allow secondary infection.
Fleas can also carry tapeworms. A dog may ingest an infected flea while grooming and later develop a tapeworm infection. Cornell’s canine health guidance lists these skin and parasite consequences among the reasons prevention matters even when a dog is not visibly infested.

Tick-related disease exposure
Ticks can transmit serious infections, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The exact risk depends on geography, tick species, and whether a tick feeds long enough to transmit an organism. You may not notice a tick before it attaches, and some dogs show nonspecific signs such as lethargy, fever, reduced appetite, lameness, or swollen joints.
Prevention reduces the chance of an encounter or feeding event, but no product makes outdoor exposure impossible. Check your dog after walks and contact a veterinarian promptly if you find an attached tick or your dog develops illness after possible exposure.
Choosing a year-round product that fits your dog
Oral, topical, and collar products are all established preventive formats. They do not all cover the same parasites, work in the same way, or suit every dog. The label determines covered species, minimum age, weight range, dosing interval, application instructions, and safety warnings.

| Format | What to verify on the label | Practical questions for your veterinarian |
|---|---|---|
| Oral preventive | Covered parasites, minimum age and weight, dosing interval, contraindications, and directions for missed doses. | Is it appropriate with my dog’s medical conditions and other medicines? Can I give every dose on schedule? |
| Topical preventive | Application site, covered parasites, age and weight limits, dosing interval, and instructions related to bathing or swimming. | Will my dog’s bathing, swimming, coat type, or contact with children affect practical use? |
| Flea and tick collar | Covered parasites, fit and replacement interval, age and weight limits, contact precautions, and directions for use. | Will the collar stay fitted correctly, and is it suitable for this dog’s skin and household? |
Consistency is a major part of effectiveness. A theoretically excellent product cannot protect reliably if doses are forgotten, a topical is not applied as directed, or a collar is removed and not replaced. Choose the format you can administer correctly and on the labeled schedule.
A practical process for setting up prevention
- Book a veterinary review. Tell the clinician where your dog lives, where you travel, how often your dog is outdoors, and whether other pets share the home.
- List health and medication details. Bring your dog’s current medicines, supplements, diagnoses, allergies, age, weight, and any history of neurologic or skin reactions. The veterinarian can determine which labeled options are appropriate.
- Define the parasite targets. Ask which flea and tick species and diseases are relevant locally and whether the selected product covers the parasites your dog is most likely to encounter. Do not assume one product covers every parasite.
- Read the entire label. Confirm the species, minimum age, weight band, administration route, interval, storage instructions, and warnings before the first dose.
- Put every dose or replacement on a calendar. Use a phone reminder, written chart, or veterinary practice reminder system. Record the date given, product name, lot information if available, and the next due date.
- Recheck after changes. Contact the veterinarian if your dog’s weight, health, medicines, living situation, travel pattern, or tolerance changes.
What if you want to stop during winter?
Do not treat a calendar date as a universal stopping rule. Ask your veterinarian to assess your dog’s regional and individual risk before changing the schedule. The answer may differ for a dog that spends winter outdoors, a dog that travels, and a dog with a documented reaction to a particular product.

Restarting after a gap may leave time for existing fleas or ticks to be present before protection is re-established. Continue checking the coat and skin, and seek veterinary advice if you find parasites or notice itching, skin lesions, fever, lethargy, lameness, or appetite changes.
What to do when fleas are already in the home
An established flea problem rarely disappears after one treatment. Cornell and CAPC both note that control can take several months because the infestation includes immature stages in the environment as well as adult fleas on pets.
Effective management has two parts:
- Treat every susceptible pet according to veterinary instructions. A single untreated dog or cat can allow the cycle to continue.
- Address the environment. Follow professional advice on cleaning and environmental treatment for bedding, carpets, furniture, cracks, and other areas where flea stages may develop.
You may continue seeing some fleas after treatment begins because previously deposited stages can emerge. That does not necessarily mean the preventive has failed, but persistent activity warrants a veterinary review of product choice, administration, household treatment, and possible reinfestation.

Never transfer a dog product to a cat
The AVMA warns that some dog products, including products containing permethrin, are toxic to cats. Never apply a dog-labeled product to a cat, and do not assume that separating pets briefly makes an inappropriate product safe. Read species-specific labels and ask your veterinarian how to manage contact between treated animals.
Keep labels and dosing records
Store packaging or photograph the label so you can confirm the active ingredients, strength, directions, and emergency information. Record which pet received which product and when. This is especially important when several animals have different weights or use different formats.
When professional advice is especially important
- Your dog is a puppy, elderly, underweight, pregnant, nursing, or being bred.
- Your dog has chronic disease, seizures, neurologic signs, liver or kidney problems, or takes multiple medicines.
- You have seen a reaction after a flea or tick product.
- Your dog swims or is bathed frequently and uses a topical product.
- You live with cats or other species that could be exposed to a dog product.
- You are moving, traveling, boarding your dog, or adopting another pet.
- You find an attached tick, widespread fleas, tapeworm segments, severe itching, skin infection, fever, lethargy, or lameness.
The decision in one sentence
Year-round prevention is the general veterinary best practice, while the exact product and schedule should be individualized by location, exposure, health, household, and label directions. A winter pause is not automatically safe simply because outdoor temperatures fall.
