A sugar glider can be an engaging, affectionate companion—but it is not an easy “pocket pet.” This small marsupial needs another compatible glider, a tall and secure enclosure, a carefully planned diet, daily evening interaction, and access to an exotic-animal veterinarian.

They are usually a poor choice for children, people who want a pet active during the day, or anyone looking for inexpensive, uncomplicated care. For an experienced owner who can meet their needs for the next decade or longer, they may be a rewarding choice.

What is a sugar glider?

A sugar glider is a small, arboreal, nocturnal marsupial. It has a skin membrane called the patagium between its wrists and ankles, allowing it to glide between elevated surfaces. It is not a flying squirrel or a rodent.

In the wild, sugar gliders live socially in colonies. They climb, forage, vocalize, scent-mark, and become active after dark. Their natural diet includes plant exudates, nectar, pollen, and invertebrates. Those behaviors explain why their care is more demanding than their size suggests.

The name “sugar glider” also does not mean that the animal should eat mostly sweet foods. Fruit is attractive to them, but a fruit-heavy diet can cause serious nutritional problems.

Why sugar gliders can make good pets

They can form strong relationships with their owners

With patient handling and appropriate socialization, many sugar gliders become comfortable with people. Some enjoy riding in a bonding pouch or interacting with their owner during supervised evening activity. Their intelligence and curiosity make them interesting to watch as they climb, forage, glide, and investigate their surroundings.

That said, individual temperament varies. A trusting glider is not guaranteed to be constantly cuddly, and even a well-socialized animal may bite if frightened, handled roughly, or abruptly awakened.

They are active and engaging

If you enjoy observing an animal’s natural behavior rather than simply holding it, a sugar glider can be fascinating. Their active period includes climbing, scent-marking, vocalizing, playing, and searching for food. They need enrichment and opportunities to use their body and mind.

They are a long-term companion

Captive sugar gliders commonly live about 9–12 years, with some veterinary references reporting lifespans of 12–14 years or longer with good care. This can be a benefit if you want a long-term relationship, but it also means that acquiring one is a commitment comparable to keeping a dog or cat for many years.

Why sugar gliders are difficult pets

They are awake when most people are going to bed

Sugar gliders sleep during the day and become active at night. Their normal nighttime behavior can include noise, climbing, gliding, and vocalizing. If you want to handle a pet after school or during the afternoon, a sugar glider is a poor match. Waking one during its normal sleep period can cause stress and may lead to defensive behavior.

Owners should expect to provide meaningful social time in the evening or at night. Current veterinary guidance recommends at least two hours of social time every evening or night, in addition to feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and health monitoring.

They generally should not live alone

These are highly social animals. A compatible glider companion is normally preferable to solitary housing. A single glider may require exceptional daily human attention and enrichment, and insufficient companionship or stimulation can contribute to aggression, repetitive behavior, fur loss, skin damage, and self-mutilation.

Buying one glider with the intention of adding another later is not automatically simple. Introductions need to be managed, and unfamiliar animals may not be compatible. You should plan financially and logistically for the needs of at least two animals before acquiring either one.

Their diet is specialized

A sugar glider should not be fed fruit alone, a bowl of generic rodent food, or an improvised high-sugar diet. A suitable feeding plan normally includes a nutritionally balanced commercial or nectar-based component, appropriate protein such as calcium-supported insects, and carefully limited fruit and vegetables.

Fruit should not displace the nutritionally complete part of the diet. Too much fruit combined with inadequate calcium and protein can contribute to nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, a serious metabolic bone disease.

There is no single universally accepted homemade recipe. Online feeding plans are not all reliable, and nutritional recommendations continue to evolve. Discuss the diet with an exotic-animal veterinarian and make changes gradually rather than switching abruptly.

They need a tall, secure enclosure

A small animal does not necessarily need a small cage. Sugar gliders are arboreal and active, so they need a tall enclosure with room to climb and move between levels. Veterinary recommendations vary, but published minimums include approximately:

Source or guidance Stated size
MSD Veterinary Manual At least 24 × 36 × 36 inches
Another MSD husbandry reference Approximately 36 × 24 × 36 inches
PetMD guidance for a pair 24 × 24 × 48 inches

These differences are not an invitation to choose the smallest option. Provide the largest safe enclosure you can accommodate, with:

  • Secure latches that prevent escapes
  • Vertical climbing space
  • Safe branches, shelves, and platforms
  • Pouches or nest boxes
  • Hiding places and regularly changed enrichment

Avoid galvanized wire, which may expose a chewing animal to heavy metals. Some PVC-coated stainless-steel products also raise toxicity concerns. Inspect the cage regularly for gaps, loose fittings, and damaged materials.

Free-roaming time must be supervised. Household hazards include cats and dogs, electrical cords, open toilets, hot surfaces, and spaces from which a glider cannot be safely retrieved.

They can bite and smell

A frightened or abruptly awakened sugar glider may bite. Approach calmly, handle it when it is awake, and support its entire body. Gentle socialization can improve trust, but it cannot remove the animal’s natural defensive responses or guarantee a cuddly temperament.

Scent-marking is normal. Even with good cage hygiene, some owners find a sugar glider’s odor noticeable. Anyone considering one should be comfortable with that possibility.

Specialist veterinary care is essential

Not every general small-animal clinic treats sugar gliders. Before acquiring one, locate a veterinarian who actively sees sugar gliders or other exotic companion mammals and confirm that the clinic can handle emergencies.

Seek veterinary advice promptly for weakness, weight loss, poor appetite, abnormal droppings, breathing difficulty, bald or damaged skin, hind-leg dragging, or sunken eyes. Exotic pets can deteriorate quickly, and waiting for a routine appointment may be dangerous.

Are sugar gliders legal where you live?

There is no single nationwide ownership rule in the United States. Requirements can vary by state, county, city, importation authority, and permit system.

Examples of restrictions include:

  • California: California Fish and Game Code § 2118 restricts possession of marsupials except under the applicable permit system. UC Davis identifies sugar gliders as illegal to own in California.
  • Hawaii: The Hawaii Department of Agriculture states that sugar gliders are strictly prohibited.
  • Alaska: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game states that sugar gliders are illegal in Alaska.

Do not rely on a breeder’s claim that an animal is legal. Check the current rules directly with your state wildlife or agriculture agency and your local government before paying for a glider or arranging transport. A place that permits ownership may still require permits, documentation, or import approval.

USDA licensing is a separate question. Commercial breeding, resale, or public exhibition may trigger Animal Welfare Act licensing requirements, while ordinary private ownership is not automatically the same as operating a regulated dealer business.

Common sugar glider misconceptions

Claim What is actually true
“They are easy because they are small.” They need specialized nutrition, a tall enclosure, companionship, evening care, enrichment, and exotic veterinary support.
“One is fine if I play with it sometimes.” Human attention does not normally replace a compatible glider companion. Solitary housing increases welfare risks.
“Fruit should be their main food.” Fruit should be limited and must not replace a balanced diet. Fruit-heavy feeding can be dangerous.
“Bonding guarantees a cuddly pet.” Many become trusting, but temperament varies and frightened gliders may bite or resist handling.
“They are flying squirrels.” They are marsupials. The gliding membrane only makes them look superficially similar.
“I can release one if I can no longer keep it.” Never release a pet outdoors. It may starve, be killed by predators, or harm native wildlife.

If you can no longer provide care, contact an experienced rescue, sanctuary, breeder, or exotic-animal organization about rehoming.

A practical decision test

Before acquiring a sugar glider, answer yes to every question below:

  1. Is ownership legal in your state and local area?
  2. Can you house compatible gliders rather than keeping one isolated?
  3. Can you provide a large, tall, escape-proof enclosure?
  4. Can you spend meaningful time with them every evening or night?
  5. Can you follow a balanced diet instead of relying on fruit or generic pet food?
  6. Can you reach an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian?
  7. Can you cover routine care and unexpected illness for two animals?
  8. Can you protect them from household hazards and supervise out-of-cage time?
  9. Do you have a rehoming plan if your finances, housing, health, or schedule change?

If any answer is no, do not acquire a sugar glider. Choosing not to buy one is better than discovering after the fact that its needs cannot be met.

FAQ

Are sugar gliders good pets for beginners?

Usually not. They are nocturnal, highly social, difficult to house alone, dependent on a specialized diet, and likely to need an exotic-animal veterinarian. They are better suited to experienced owners who can plan for at least two gliders.

Can you keep just one sugar glider?

A sugar glider can be kept alone only with substantial daily human attention and enrichment, but compatible glider companionship is normally recommended. Solitary housing can contribute to stress-related behavior and self-mutilation.

Do sugar gliders make good pets for children?

Usually no. Their nighttime schedule, delicate handling requirements, specialized care, possible biting, and long lifespan make them a poor responsibility for most children. An adult must be prepared to provide all care.

What should you feed a sugar glider?

Use a balanced veterinary-reviewed diet that includes an appropriate complete or nectar-based component, suitable protein such as calcium-supported insects, and limited fruit and vegetables. Do not feed fruit alone or rely on generic rodent food.

The Bottom Line

Should you keep a sugar glider as a pet? Only if you are prepared for a social, nocturnal exotic animal rather than a simple pocket pet. Legal ownership, compatible companionship, a large secure enclosure, a balanced diet, at least two hours of evening interaction, and an experienced veterinarian are basic requirements. If you want a low-maintenance or daytime pet—or cannot meet even one of those conditions—a sugar glider is not the right choice.
