The structures nicknamed Silkhenge are not made of stone. They are small silk constructions with a central spire or tower surrounded by a circular, fence-like ring. Spiderlings have emerged from some of them, proving that a spider is involved, but the adult builder has not been seen making one and its purpose remains unresolved in the cited accounts.
Photographs first drew attention to the structures in Peru in 2013. Later observations in Peru and Ecuador recorded hatchlings, while DNA from one tiny spiderling was too inconclusive to identify a species. Protection from predators and attracting small prey are both plausible ideas, yet neither has been demonstrated. A separate South African spider really does incorporate small stones into silk retreats, but that is a different species and behavior.

What is a Silkhenge?
A Silkhenge is a silk structure that looks vaguely like a miniature monument: a raised central tower, spire or cone enclosed by a circular fence of silk. The name describes its appearance, not its material. The documented structures are made from silk, and the surrounding ring is better understood as a fence-like arrangement than as a wall of masonry.

The spider connection is based on direct observations of spiderlings emerging from the towers. No observer in the cited reports watched an adult spider construct one. That distinction matters: seeing babies leave a structure demonstrates that a spider used it, but it does not reveal which species made it, how the adult built it, or what every part does.

Reports sometimes frame the mystery as a spider going to extraordinary lengths for a single egg. The observations do not establish that every Silkhenge contains one egg, however. They show a structure associated with hatching spiderlings, and the number of young seen on a few occasions is too small to define a normal clutch.
How the structures were discovered
Photographs in the Peruvian Amazon
Researcher Troy Alexander photographed unusual circular silk designs near Peru’s Tambopata Research Center in 2013. At first, the objects were notable because they looked deliberately arranged rather than like random scraps of web. Their central tower and surrounding ring gave rise to the Stonehenge comparison.
The first recorded hatchlings
In December 2013, a team documented spiderlings emerging from the structures. National Geographic’s January 9, 2014 report described 45 fences along a 650-foot (200-meter) stretch of trail and reported spiderlings hatching from three of them. The adult spider was not seen. Those figures describe that particular surveyed stretch and set of observations; they are not estimates of how common the structures are in the wider forest.

Observations beyond Peru
A December 15, 2016 National Geographic account reported Silkhenge sightings in Peru, French Guiana and Ecuador, with most known observations still near Tambopata. In Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park, observers recorded video of spiderlings emerging from a collected tower. Three spiderlings came out of that Ecuadorian structure, compared with one in the earlier Peruvian observation. These events confirm that the structures can contain more than one hatchling, but they do not establish a typical brood size.
Tropical biologist Phil Torres described the discovery in that account as “This was just such a rare glimpse at these Silkhenges.” The comment captures the central limitation: the structures are conspicuous once found, but the brief period when an adult builds one has not been observed.

What species of spider makes Silkhenge?
No species identification has been established in the cited accounts. The hatchlings were extremely small and undeveloped, so they lacked the adult features taxonomists normally use for visual identification. Without an adult, a mature specimen or a reliable genetic match, the structure cannot be assigned confidently to a named species.
What the DNA result does—and does not—say
National Geographic reported that a sequence from one spiderling produced an 86 percent match to several spider families, including Theridiidae, Clubionidae and Linyphiidae. That result was not a species identification, and it did not identify a genus. It indicates only that the sequence was not close enough to a well-represented reference entry to settle the animal’s place in the classification system.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA low-confidence or broad barcode match is especially difficult to interpret when reference databases contain few sequences from tropical spiders. Arachnologist Peter Jaeger of the Senckenberg Research Institute explained the database problem this way: “Only 10 percent of the invertebrate species are described, and only a few of them are in a DNA database.” His figure was reported in the 2016 article and should be read as his stated estimate at that time, not as a newly verified global census.
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute scientist William Eberhard made the narrower point that the barcode cannot by itself answer whether the spider is new to science: “The big question from the barcode data,” Eberhard says, “is not whether it is a described or undescribed species—most species from that site are probably undescribed—but which of the already known species is the DNA from this spiderling closest to?” In other words, the result leaves both possibilities open. It does not prove that Silkhenge belongs to a new species.
Why would a spider build the tower and fence?
The function is unknown. Two explanations appeared in the early accounts, and both remain hypotheses rather than demonstrated adaptations.

| Proposed function | Observation that prompted it | What is still missing | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Predator deterrence or protection | A ring of silk could make it harder for predators to reach an egg sac or newly hatched spiderlings. | No controlled test shows that the fence blocks a particular predator, improves survival or changes predator behavior. | Plausible but unproven |
| Attracting or trapping food | Small organisms such as mites have reportedly been found caught in silk around some structures. | Spiderlings have not been observed eating those organisms, and no feeding advantage has been measured. | Plausible but unproven |
| More than one role | The tower and ring may create different microhabitats or work together. | No observation separates the functions of the central spire and the surrounding fence. | Possible, with no direct test |
The protection idea
A fence could act as a physical or visual barrier around vulnerable eggs or hatchlings. That interpretation is intuitive because the ring surrounds the central structure, but appearance alone cannot show whether a predator is the target. The relevant predator, the timing of protection and the survival benefit have not been documented.

Another early suggestion was that the silk might catch mites, ants or other tiny prey that newly hatched spiders could use. The 2026 A-Z Animals account says small creatures, including mites, have been found caught in silk in some cases. It also says observers have not seen the spiderlings eat them. A trapped organism therefore demonstrates contact with the silk, not that the structure was designed as a food trap or that it supplies nutrition.
Why wasp emergence complicates the picture
The May 26, 2026 A-Z Animals report, which summarizes interviews and linked coverage, says parasitic wasps have been observed emerging from some Silkhenge towers. If a wasp can use the structure, a fence may not be a reliable all-purpose shield. Phil Torres is quoted in that account discussing a possible barrier role while acknowledging the wasp observation.
Wasp emergence does not automatically disprove protection. A barrier might deter some threats, protect during one life stage or have a function unrelated to wasps. It does show why the simple statement “the fence protects the babies” goes beyond the evidence. The wasp observation and the reports of trapped mites are events to explain, not experiments that choose a winning hypothesis.
What remains unknown about construction

- Which adult spider makes the structure, and what does that adult look like?
- How long does construction take, and is the tower built before or after the egg sac is deposited?
- Does one adult build one structure, or can a structure be reused?
- Are the tower and circular fence made in a fixed sequence?
- Does the fence have a different function from the central spire?
- How often do predators, parasites or prey interact with the silk?
The absence of an adult-building observation is the key gap. Hatchlings can establish the association with spiders, but they cannot reveal the builder’s behavior. A time-lapse record of construction, paired with an adult specimen and genetic samples from the silk, would be needed to connect a particular spider to the finished design with confidence. Survival comparisons between structures with intact and experimentally altered fences would be needed to test a protective role, while documented feeding events or prey-growth measurements would be needed to test the food-trap idea.

A separate field account from South Africa describes a genuine stone-and-silk retreat made by Amaurobius africana. The Spider Club News report from March 2021 covers rocky coastline at Onrus and Vermont and records several retreat forms. In one form, the observer describes small stones held upright by silk in a Stonehenge-like arrangement.
That observation should not be merged with the Amazonian Silkhenge mystery. The differences are substantial:
| Feature | Silkhenge reports | Amaurobius africana retreat account |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Silk tower or spire with a surrounding silk fence; no documented stone construction. | Small stones incorporated into a silk-supported retreat. |
| Spider identity | Adult builder unidentified in the cited accounts; hatchlings were too immature for a species name. | Identified in the field account as Amaurobius africana. |
| Location | Amazonian sites in Peru and Ecuador, with reports from French Guiana. | Rocky shores around Onrus and Vermont in South Africa. |
| Evidence type | Photographs, hatchling emergence and limited genetic data. | An observer’s description of retreat forms; not a controlled functional study. |
| What “Stonehenge-like” means | A visual nickname for a circular silk arrangement around a tower. | A visual description of upright real stones held by silk. |
The South African example proves that a spider can stabilize stones with silk, but it does not identify the builder of Silkhenge or explain the Amazonian fence. Similar appearance is not evidence of shared species, ancestry or purpose.

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Directly observed: Silk structures have a central tower and circular fence; spiderlings have emerged from some; structures have been reported in several tropical locations; small organisms and, in the 2026 secondary report, parasitic wasps have been associated with some towers.
- Supported but incomplete: The structures are made by a spider, because spiderlings emerged from them. The observations do not identify the adult or show the construction process.
- Speculative: The fence protects eggs, traps food, serves a second function or evolved for a particular predator. These are explanations awaiting behavioral tests.
The numbers in the historical reports require the same care. Forty-five fences along 650 feet (200 meters) describes one Peruvian trail survey. Three hatchlings from an Ecuadorian tower and one from an earlier Peruvian structure describe two documented emergence events. An 86 percent barcode match describes one genetic result. None is a population average, a standard clutch size or a species-level identification.
What could finally identify the builder?
Future observations would need to connect an adult to a structure, not merely find babies inside one. The most decisive evidence would combine several lines:
- Construction footage: A continuous or repeated recording showing an adult placing silk and completing the tower and fence.
- Mature specimens: An adult collected after construction so its diagnostic anatomy can be compared with known species.
- Better genetic reference material: DNA from the adult, hatchlings and nearby known spiders, matched against a broader tropical-arachnid database.
- Function tests: Carefully monitored structures in which the fence is left intact, altered or absent, with predator encounters, prey capture and hatchling survival recorded.
- Independent observations: Repeated findings at multiple sites to determine whether the same design, timing and interactions occur consistently.
Until those observations exist, a confident species name or single-purpose explanation would be premature. The strongest conclusion is narrower: an unidentified spider produces a distinctive silk tower-and-fence structure associated with hatching young, and the biological reason for that design is still open.
What readers can confidently say about the mystery
Silkhenge is a real, repeatedly photographed silk construction, not a miniature stone monument. Its spider connection is supported by hatchlings, while its adult maker, construction sequence and function remain unresolved in the cited reporting through the May 2026 secondary account. The South African stone-and-silk retreat is an intriguing comparison, but it belongs to another spider in another habitat. The mystery persists because the most important moment—the adult building the structure—has not yet been witnessed.
